July 13 — World Rock Day

July 13th is the world's celebration of Rock Day — a date chosen in honor of the Live Aid charity event, held in 1985.

Rock emerged in the United States in the 1950s, influenced by Black American culture. It was a vibrant new musical genre—a blend of musical styles such as blues, country, and R&B (rhythm and blues). The musical genre quickly became popular among young people, who identified with its energy and lyrics, which often addressed social and political issues.

Rock differentiated itself from its precursor genres due to the acceleration of the rhythm and the intensity of the songs, especially with the use of the electric guitar.

The term Rock N' Roll was coined by disc jockey Alan Freed.

Influences

Blues and R&B: With its roots in black American music, blues and R&B (the more upbeat version of blues) were fundamental to the development of rock.

Country: Country music was also a contributor to the genre in terms of sound due to its simpler melodies and lyrics.

Main pioneers:

Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Elvis Presley are icons that helped rock become popular and a reference for many artists.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915-1973) was a black singer, songwriter, and guitarist who performed gospel, blues, and country music. She was one of the first to use the electric guitar, combining the instrument with gospel, blues, and jazz, creating a unique style and becoming a rock icon and a major influence on many future artists. Unfortunately, she was a pioneer who received little recognition.

About World Rock Day:

Although the date chosen to represent a tribute to the musical genre is July 13th due to Live Aid — which also popularized the genre on Brazilian radio —, (according to research) the date is generally more considered in Brazil than in other countries.

Other rock experts also consider other dates to celebrate, such as July 5th due to the recording of Elvis Presley's "That's All Right".

Secos & Molhados and Kiss

The illusory(?) relationship of revolutionary bands.

Hello, dears! This is Ney Matogrosso, one of the greatest MPB (Músicas Popular Brasileira -> Brazilian Popular Music) singers. He was the lead singer of the band Secos e Molhados — which emerged during the tropicalist movement —, drawing attention for his voice, performance and stage attire.

Here in Brazil, in addition to a discussion about who invented the first airplane — Santos Dumont is recognized as the "father of aviation" in Brazil, but there is a historical dispute with the Wright brothers, who are considered pioneers in aviation in the United States and other countries —, with the release of the film "Homem com H" (which is the biography of Ney Matogrosso, available on Netflix) they returned to the subject of who started with the painted faces in the presentations: Secos e Molhados or Kiss.

In the history of his appearances with these face paintings, Ney Matogrosso appeared to the public in 1972, basing himself on kabuki so that his privacy would not be taken away — as is the case with many artists:

"I started [to wear makeup] because I heard that artists couldn't walk down the street, that artists had no privacy. I was only 31 years old, and I didn't want to give up my privacy. Based on kabuki, I went to a place where they sold black and white makeup, and I made a face for myself based on them. But they made very colorful makeup, and I made mine with only black and white."

There is even a story that one of the members of Kiss had stayed at the house of a producer here in Brazil before they formed Kiss and this producer had shown something by Secos e Molhados, implying that Kiss was inspired by Secos e Molhados. Because they only came out in public with this appearance in 1973, the theory has credibility for many people. But the band said they had other inspirations, including Japanese kabuki theater, the looks of other artists like Arthur Brown and Alice Cooper, and even science fiction figures.

Anyway, i love them both and i love the "conspiracy" theories that they have some inspiration from the Brazilian band.
