I did have one meta thing about DA4 strike me like a bolt out of the blue while thinking about how happy Varric is to narrate Lavellan and Solas’ happy ending

Someone else then pointed out that Varric has hints in canon that he might have been able to start again with a Female Hawke, much like Solas moving on with Lavellan. But I’m not enough of a Varric scholar to add more than I think this was very much on purpose.

Varric may have wanted a happy ending to this story particularly. And reframes his letter to Lavellan that he promised to bring Solas home to her

I really like the progression of leaving Hawke in the fade to Bianca showing up at skyhold. Because Varric is absolutely devastated, and there's no way Bianca wouldn't have heard about the Champion of Kirkwall dying. So it makes sense that she'd suddenly be there RIGHT THEN to check on him, and kill two birds with one stone while she's at it.

Meanwhile, Varric is absolutely devastated...to the point where he's clinging onto the past even more than normal. He needs this one thing, this one piece of his past. But you can also tell when they're bantering in the cave that...he can't really get into it. This isn't what he's looking for. And then the fight breaks out and it's just...

It's literally varric at his lowest at that point. He's fucked up twice now; Hawke is dead, Bianca is meddling with red lyrium, Bianca can't be Hawke, Hawke is gone and so is everyone else and he's stuck here in the arse end of nowhere fixing a situation he truly believes is all his fault.

It's so juicy. Aaaaa
