I want to clear something up.

Polyamory is not the same as polygamy.

Polyamory is consensual. Polygamy is coercive.

Polyamory has no sexuality constraints. Polygamy is mostly heterosexual.

Polygamy is one person marrying multiple partners (who in turn, have very little say in the matter and cannot marry anyone else themselves). It's mostly a cultural or religious construct.

Polyamory is the ability to be attracted to (or love) multiple people at the same time and is all about have sexual and/or romantic relationships (not just marriage) with multiple people (who all have a say and who all have the same right to be involved with others if they so wish). It is consensual (otherwise it's just cheating) and as personal as sexuality, it's not culturally based.

I've seen a lot of people using the terms as synonyms or asking what's the difference. Hope this clears it up.
