Thank you to all those who submitted bids and offers, raising a total of $817 dollars for public defenders. Jean Valjean might be fictional, but his situation is all too common. Your donations go to ensure that no one faces a court case that could send them to jail for years without the benefit of legal counsel. In an underfunded field, every dollar counts when it comes to preventing injustice.

$817 is almost DOUBLE what we raised in the last auction, Winter 2021-2022, or in the previous one in Winter 2020-2021. You are all amazing. On a personal level, it was great to come back from a year off (Winter 2022-2023) to so much enthusiasm and so many cool items. The sixteen offers ranged from linocuts to zines to embroidery to bound books. Among the other offers were beautiful art, creative fic and poems, a translation commission, and even an Enjolras gift pack.

I was also moved by how many bidders donated more than their original bid, sometimes even doubling their offer. Not one person defaulted when it came time to get their donations in. People in countries or states that didn't have ways to donate to local public defenders came through with creative solutions, such as donating to legal aid for refugees or sending their donation to groups in another state or country. We had a hiccup with the listed organizations requiring credit cards, but it was resolved by finding a Louisiana public defender group that took Paypal. In the end, every bid came through, and many with extra.

As I'm one person running this in my spare time, I truly appreciate how easy you all have made it for me. It's been years since this Les Mis fandom tradition started, and I hope to keep it going for many more to come. Thank you all for your participation!

Auction Rules for the Bishop Myriel Fundraiser 2023

Public defenders, lawyers who provide legal defense for those who cannot afford it, are often all that stands between modern Jean Valjeans and 19 years in prison. This post by Radley Balko, a journalist advocating for criminal justice reform, points out that even though the right to a lawyer is guaranteed in the USA if you're facing serious charges, public defenders are underfunded, overworked, and demoralized. All of which gets in the way of putting up a good fight in court for their clients. That's where you come in. We're going to raise money for public defender organizations via the Bishop Myriel Fundraiser 2023. You can start submitting your offers now, in accordance with the rules, and bidding will commence as the offers are coming in.

Rules

1. Offering

SUBMIT your offering post to this blog! Include a link to this rules post in your own post, and also a minimum starting offer for your item, which can be a fic, art, or a physical item--be creative! Your offer does NOT have to be connected to the Les Misérables fandom, although such items are always welcome! Any terms and conditions of your offer should also be included in the post, eg what fandoms you are wiling to write for, any hard no’s on content, etc. Offer posts can keep coming in through the SUBMIT button until the auction closes.

2. Bidding

Bid in REPLIES NOT REBLOGS (this is important because replies enable me to figure out who bid when and avoid conflicts) until end of day Eastern Time December 15th, 2023. The highest bidder at that time will be the winner. Bidding can start as each item is posted.

3. Claiming or delivering your item

If you have won an item, I will contact you directly via DM and ask you to provide a receipt or other verification for a donation to an indigent defense/public defender orgnaization in the amount bid. Send such verification to bishopmyrielfundraiser@gmail.com or in a screenshot on Tumblr. AFTER I have verified that, I will contact the offerer to let them know they can deliver the item. If you do not respond at all to my attempts to contact you within one week, I will move on to the next highest bidder. So check your DMs. All items should be delivered by March 31st, 2024 at the absolute latest, unless you have made other arrangements, eg the custom item/fic takes longer than that to create or write and you communicate about this. Earlier is even better, but remember that the most important thing is to keep the winner informed and make sure everyone has a good time. Let's keep this a fun event in the spirit of Bishop Myriel, so this fundraiser can keep going for years to come. 4. Offer: a custom lino print featuring a sentence/phrase of your choice.

This will be carved onto an A5 block, so please make sure the sentence/phrase you’re considering will fit! For reference that’s probably around 6-10 words/40 characters for something with 5 lines, or more if you don’t mind the text being smaller. You can see an example of my lino work on my other offer post.

I can print in any colour and we can discuss extra features- e.g I can add a border around the sides or print the text on top of lino blocks I’ve already made (I have a raised fist block and some geometric patterns, for example.)

Hello! For this fundraiser I’m offering zines of my webcomic adaptation of The Hobbit! You can find this comic at @retellingthehobbit.

The zines are “hobbit-sized” (so they’re a bit small.) The comic is also split across multiple different zines, with each zine containing one or two chapters.

These are “prototype zines” I usually only share with my family and friends, so you should expect them to be very DIY and handmade! I don’t intend to sell ‘official’ physical copies of the comic for a while yet. Bidding starts at $20! Picture of all five zines
