*crumbles into dust after finishing this* Thank you for reading! This The Hobbit webcomic adaptation thing takes a lot of effort to put together and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate every comment. I also really appreciate the people who’ve spread the word of this comic to their friends! <3

And finally, we’re at the Song of the Lonely Mountain! Within Tolkien’s canon, The Hobbit is an in-universe book that was “written” by Bilbo Baggins, who occasionally lies/embellishes/exaggerates things. The tonal differences between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are explained by Bilbo and Frodo/Sam being different kinds of storytellers, with different relationships to “the truth.” This idea is the core of how I’m adapting the novel!  Bilbo is an unreliable narrator who is literally ‘drawing’ from his own limited experiences;  the different art styles reflect the different perspectives of other characters.   The “dwarf art style” in this chapter is inspired by stonework/metalwork in general— but especially by a mix of art deco, Celtic art, and European folk art. 

The central tension of the comic is between Bilbo and Thorin, who each have wildly different ideas about what kind of  story they’re in. Thorin is in a grand fantasy epic, while Bilbo is in a lighthearted children’s book adventure.  The tragedy is, obviously, that only one side of the story ever gets to be fully told.

On a sillier note, a few years ago I had my first gay crush on a lesbian who sang while playing the piano. This chapter is dedicated to the piano lesbian. I hope they’re doing well, wherever they are. XD

I think I might need a bit of a break but I’m hoping for the next chapter, titled “Dawn,” to arrive on January 13th. And your comments/support really do help motivate me to get more done! ^_^

Hello! For this fundraiser I’m offering zines of my webcomic adaptation of The Hobbit! You can find this comic at @retellingthehobbit.

The zines are “hobbit-sized” (so they’re a bit small.) The comic is also split across multiple different zines, with each zine containing one or two chapters.

Feeling under the weather, took a break from writing final papers, I’ve passed out somehow almost all day???? But in that break, I made this for my WIP, and now I’m emotional about the story again.

not very coherent, but god. Re-listening to the 1980s radio adaptation of Lord of the Rings. I usually get about midway through the Two Towers before stopping. I'm not always up to the full slow horrific crawl to Mordor.

But. This time. I'm struck at the perverse symmetry between Mt. Doom, and the Lonely Mountain. These peaks that dominate story, that are described in lore long before they loom over the hobbits. A solitary, perilous peak they spend most of the story just trying to reach. Complete with the eagles arriving just in the nick of time, when our protagonists swoon on its slopes.

The radio play doesn't emphasize the connections to The Hobbit as strongly as the book does- or at least, it didn't, up until the later compilation added small sections of Frodo, after the events of the series, compiling The Red Book. Often offering commentary on Bilbo's profusion of titles, the mess of his uncle's notes; the enormity of the undertaking before him, stitching it all together, continuing the story as long as he is able.

The framing device makes clear how Frodo's story is an extension of his uncle's. While the grand tales of Beren and Luthien, Eärendil the Mariner, Isildur and Gil-galad, are brought up over and over- so is Bilbo's story, more immediate and dear to the hobbits. A childhood story, told before bedtime, impressed into their hearts.

I don't know. I'm sure many people have noted these parallels. They just break my heart; the way Sam half chuckles to himself, clinging to Frodo as the rivers of fire course nearer. Thinking he hears eagles, impossibly. He doesn't have to say 'like Bilbo, towards the end of his story' for us to remember, to understand why he's laughing, even as he loses consciousness.

How the memory of the story he was told as a child comforts him, on the burning slopes of a mountain of ash. How Bilbo's childhood tale of cleverness and courage in the face of greed is recalled, at the very end.

How of course Sam laughs, because- how could Bilbo's eagles reach them here? That's not their story. How could it ever be, after the horrors, the tedious miserable resentful continuing, the way the Ring poisoned everything, even the love between him and Frodo. How Frodo couldn't even let go of the Ring, on his own.

It couldn't be the eagles.

(But of course it was. It is, unbearably, all the same story, even as darkened and wretched as it's become. Bilbo's mercy was Frodo's mercy was Sam's mercy, was the mercy of the world. But it's as impossible to remember thirteen dwarves on a quest to reclaim their homeland, as it is to remember the Shire. They can't exist in the same world, the same story. They can't. They shouldn't. They do.)

i got a comment the other day on a fic asking if they could make the fic into a comic and asked for permission 'to draw it' (in their words not mine) and post it on ao3

i'm ECSTATIC like any other fic writer is to be offered artwork inspired by their fic especially a comic??? so i said yes of course and i get the related works notification and it..'s....... another fic? and not even that it's like. rewritten the beginning of my fic so it starts differently and i mean I'm still like 'wow you liked my thing so much you wanted to write a fic based off of it!!!' but also

i was....expecting art....???

okay so i really want to sleep but this won't get out of my brain so guys the hobbit (book version mostly) would adapt into a musical brilliantly!! Like okay so im litterally hashing this out while typing but the first scene starts off really dark and gruesomey with like red lights flashing and smoke n shit and the first song is sung by the dwarves about Smuag reigning fire and killing everyone, then the scene shits to a happier hobbit song with lots of dancing and joy and cheer. We get introduced to Thorin and Bilbo here and establish their characters being different (Bilbo completely and utterly respectable and hobbitish and Thorin brave and strong and the picture of dwarven royalty) and then song ends in Bag End when Bilbo receives a knock on the door and in enters Gandalf. quick interaction here maybe Gandalf sings a quick ditty about Belladonna Baggins and her bravery before scratching a rune on the door.

Next scene is Bilbo singing a song about adventures- or other Hobbits singing a song about adventures having no place amougst a sensible hobbit society. idk maybe OH WAIT Bilbo alone in his house laughing about gandalf and singing about what its like to be a baggins while cooking himself dinner. Towards the end of the song you start hearing knocking on the door and it ends with Bilbo opening the door and seeing a big ol scary looking dwarf maybe he lets out a little shriek and slams the door shut "was that a dwarf?" opens the door again takes a peeks maybe the dwarf lets out a little "hi" before he slams it shut again.

i love broody movie Thorin but Book Thorin whose prone to dramatically monologing and is the picture of royalty is litterally to good of an opportunity to give up. He sings a song very dramatic song about needing Bilbo to steal from a dragon.

The three trolls sing a cooking song about how to cook various beings. Bilbo temporarily steals their tune when trying to convince them how to properly cook a dwarf.

The Elves of Rivendell sing the same song they do in the books. Mirkwood gets their own song as well but in opposition to the way the dwarves sing.

When Bilbo fights the Spiders he sings a similar song to the one Gandalf sung about a Tooks bravery thus acknowledging his mothers side and naming his sword Sting.

The beginning of act 2 song is sung by the other Company dwarves insulting Elves. They get into shitty Elves costumes at some point.

Bilbos song about being a baggins is a reoccurring theme when he needs to make a decision. It plays then stops when he decides to make a unhobbitish move. his theme changes slightly when he gets the Ring. Not too much but it has a note that sounds slightly unnatural.

Thorin has this reoccurring noble sounding theme but when he has gold sickness it becomes warped and dark.

Laketown sings a song very similar to the ones that the Hobbits sang in their half of the prologue but its a lot more brutal and very insulting towards the king.

The Battle of Five Armies is combines all the tunes of Laketown, The Elves, Dwarves, Orcs and Bilbo into a chaotically beautiful song where the previously battling armies now work sing in a haunting harmony.

Thorins death song is very sad:( and he sings solely to Bilbo about dwarven afterlives and also lands flush with life and plants and commanding Bilbo to return home.

some boromir headcanons

he likes to eat spicy food. he cannot handle the spice, but keeps eating it anyways.

he stays up during merry and pippin’s watches during the night. half because he wants to keep them awake and give them company, half because he’s pretty sure they wont be paying attention.

best hugs. he will kind of pick u up while he hugs u.

would wear a fanny pack.

his favorite food is chicken. he likes any kind of chicken. also likes apples.

decent story teller. can recall gondor’s history easy. when he starts talking about it, he becomes very passionate and has been known to yell or cry while retelling events.

carries around a packet of dirt from gondor around with him for good luck.

tried to make his own brew. went blind for a little bit after trying it. gimli fuckin loves it tho, tried it at gondor and brought a batch with him.

has dogs. took in a stray while patrolling the city, named him Minas. Minas lived a long and happy life, and afterwards Faramir brought him a puppy who he named Ithil.

he is also allergic to dogs. insists otherwise.

his men call him “big brother boromir” behind his back. he pretends not to know.

once pippin called him dad and he coasted on that high for weeks

afraid of heights. will not admit it.

great with babies. would carry faramir around. his dad let him even though boromir was only five at the time, and faramir would try and wiggle out of his arms.

he whittles!!! or carves. works with wood. he made little trinkets for the hobbits in his spare time during the journey. he made pippin a little wooden dog and merry a rabbit because merrys kinda afraid of dogs. he made a bill the pony for sam after moria and was working on a cat for frodo before he passed away. it was in his pocket, half made. the didn’t spot it before he sailed away.

made faramir toys when they were younger- whole barnyard full of animals and some important gondor land marks. also a mini version of their family. faramir passed this down to pippin, who passed it down to his kids. it’s now a family heirloom.

dyslexic. faramir would read to him while he carved trinkets and such.

the fellowship goes out of their way to visit this shrine. he also has one in gondor, rivendell, and just outside of lorien.

boromir tried to teach merry and pippin wood carving once. pippins carving tools were quickly confiscated but merry learned how to make a boat.

merry officially took up wood carving after his death. he makes little boats for the hobbitlings and they have a race every summer down stream.

he also taught the hobbits how to make said boats, so when they’re older they hold the race themself. afterwards, they take the winning boat down to the graveyard.

boromir has a grave in the shire that the hobbits put gifts on, including said boats. it’s on the edge of the forest by the river. the fellowship all come to visit. some things left include: flowers, hot sauce, wooden toys, notes, homemade jam, pretty rocks, and some of farmer maggot’s produce. farmer maggot does not know of this.

The dumb part abt George RR Martin's moaning about Tolkien's world building is that Tolkien's work is supposed to be like a historical retelling. Correct me if I'm wrong though. Tolkien wrote Lotr and the Hobbit like he was translating the original stories from Middle Earth, it was supposed to be like a "pre-everything" historical (fictional) legend for Britain and Europe to some extent. Silmarillion is just more of a dry info book, and covers some other historical events, some myths, but also isn't a hard lore book.

George RR Martin complaining about the lack of realism turns out to basically be like bitching that Snow White and the Seven dwarves didn't cover how Snow White became a Queen and then created a national jewel and precious metal trade through a pact with her 7 dwarf friends.

nobody would really get him to admit it, but he’s a huge fan of cuddling

if you’re sitting down and reading, or lying in bed, he will drop whatever else he thought of doing and just plop down

loves to just wrap around you as much as possible

he will very rarely ask to be the little spoon but you know he sometimes needs it

deep down he’s actually a bit insecure, but when you hold him it all just melts away

he doesn’t need to be smart, funny, brave, anything, he can just be

surprisingly, he’s okay just being quiet while you cuddle

and he can just listen to you talk or even read to him and he’ll drift off to another plane of existence

many times you caught him looking at you like you’re the very creator of love, beauty and everything good there is in the world

and he will have your face in his hands while kissing you

on the one hand cuddling is sometimes too slow of an activity for his energetic self

on the other hand he would glue himself to you if that was possible

he likes cuddling with you but every now and then he will sit up because he remembered something or he will retell a story so animatedly that you’ll accidentally get hit in the face

of course he will apologize a trillion times, paired with just as many kisses

he loooves when you two lie down facing each other, noses almost touching, who needs personal space anyway

you figured out how to magically make him calm - brushing your fingers through his curls works like magic

and it’s even better if he can lay half on top of you

he basically has no idea what he’s doing but that has absolutely never stopped him before

and it is not about to, especially when it comes to being affectionate to his favorite person

he will attack your cute face with kisses until you laugh breathlessly

long and tender kisses are saved for more private and special settings

short and sweet kisses are the more common kind 

100% the type to give you a quick little kiss on the lips, move away, and then come back for a longer one

sometimes your noses or foreheads would bump due to too much enthusiasm and then you giggle and he’s FLOORED like how are you real

FRODO

 in his opinion there’s almost nothing better than cuddling with you while reading

the two of you would even make some snacks and tea to bring with you so you don’t have to move anywhere for a while

settle comfortably in his lap with your back against his chest and all will be well in the world

the feeling of your weight against him calms him down immensely - it’s so reassuring to know that you’re there and so close and that he can just hug you and kiss you whenever he wants

 you’ll tease him for distracting you, but the soft blush of your cheeks tell him otherwise

at this point he basically cannot fall asleep without cuddling with you

of course he doesn’t immediately tell you that, and he thinks he’s being oh so subtle, but you can read him better than that, and sometimes you lovingly tease him for it

he will literally kiss you wherever he can reach, depending on your position

forehead, lips, cheeks, temple, anything

it’s basically second nature to him when you’re alone

kisses to your fingertips when you’re holding hands

he 100% takes his sweet time kissing you

if you kiss him in public, he will need a few moments to stop blushing and regain composure

one thing that GETS him more than anything else is if you gently pin him down during a cuddling session and you’re hovering over him, some strands of your hair tickling his face

and when he’s looking up at you with those unbelievably blue eyes, you can’t help but kiss him with all you’ve got

his heart is guaranteed to skip a beat

asking him for a cuddle session is a guaranteed way to get him to stop working and fussing

you surprise him with a picnic and a relaxing day for just the two of you and his heart almost explodes

so there you are, on an emerald green grassy hill, his curly head is on your lap and he’s tracing his fingers up and down your leg while you make a flower crown out of some of his favorite wildflowers

he will blush when you place it on his head

and then immediately pull you down to lay down beside him

your head on his chest and his arm wrapped securely around you as you look up into the sky and look for clouds in funny or interesting shapes

whenever you raise your hand to point at one, he will intertwine his fingers with yours and brush a quick kiss against the back of your hand

this sweet lil thing is a very big fan of kisses, actually

his go-to, when you’re somewhere, is a soft kiss to the back of your hand (a.k.a. how to subtly show off his beloved)

in private, though, he will kiss you anywhere and everywhere and he just can’t get enough of you

reader has a thing for watching blacksmiths and metalsmiths (i used to like watching forged in fire until i realized they were a bunch of sexists)

reader has the deepest southern accent-

reader is a little insecure only to find out that everything society deems gross and unsightly in our world is hella attractive to dwarves (body hair, extra weight, etc)

reader has abandonment issues and is terrified the company or fellowship are gonna abandon them at any point

reader introduces the company/fellowship to truth or dare, reader get's dared to tell the group their biggest secret, they pull out their childhood stuffed animal from their bag and introduce the group to said stuffed animal. reader thinks the group will laugh at them. the fellowship finds it endearing. the company also finds it endearing (esp dori, bifur, and bofur).

reader goes on a tangent about frontal lobes for a solid 15 minutes straight with no stopping bc of that one hyperfixation they had a few years back.

reader with chronic pain. they never talk about it but something goes wrong, reader and (we'll say dwalin) switch bodies. the pain is so bad dwalin is keeling over and after they get switched back everyone has a little more respect for reader than before. ("what do you mean tHIS IS NORMAL EVERYDAY PAIN? YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THIS FLARES UP AND GETS WORSE??? THIS ISNT EVEN THE WORST OF IT???" reader shrugs "eh u get used to it after living with it for ur entire life")

reader doesn't like wearing shoes, but has feet as strong as a hobbits so its fine

everyone's explaining what folktale they tell children in different cultures when asked where babies come from. the dwarves talk about being born of rocks, hobbits talk about being born in gardens, the human reader tells the story of the stork

idk i kinda wanna mix some of these together
