Yeah, fair, mentor might be the wrong word. I just don’t like the idea of Izzy suddenly reappearing after Ed was finally free of him.
Izzy as some Obi Wan mentor? For who?
Ed? He’s got him buried in the front yard so he always knows where he is. Ed’s finally free of Izzy peering over his shoulder and sneaking up on him and his judgement. Fuck no!
Stede? Ew. No thanks!
Prince Ricky? Eh, sure, that could be fun.

Just sucks that it was because of Ned Low.
Maybe it's just because it's been a while since I've seen the early parts of the episode, but I really love Ed and Stede's relationship in "Calypso's Birthday." They're comfortable with each other. Ed's still feeling his way around, but there's connection and comradery there that doesn't have that tinge of desperation that they have in the first season, where they both seem to feel like they have to do something because oh my God I LIKE him.
They're on solid ground with each other. They're almost always together (I don't think there's a single scene with one that doesn't include the other?). It's subtle and quiet, but they're acting like a couple.
Tumblr media
I know it's a topic for debate, but I think that even if Ned Low hadn't shown up, they would have made love that night. It just would have been calmer.

A public service announcement to remind that these two wonderful characters are the leads of ‘Our Flag Means Death’, both seasons.
And that this picture is ultimately what the show is about. (And all the kissing pics, but this image tickles me)

I agree.
This has put me in such a mood today and I hate it. But it’s because I love it so much…
Izzy as some Obi Wan mentor? For who?
Ed? He’s got him buried in the front yard so he always knows where he is. Ed’s finally free of Izzy peering over his shoulder and sneaking up on him and his judgement. Fuck no!
Stede? Ew. No thanks!

Yeah, I know he sees Izzy as this complex character but that’s not what he showed us!
I get that he likes working with them together but he’s already showed us how toxic he is to Ed.
Izzy as some Obi Wan mentor? For who?
Ed? He’s got him buried in the front yard so he always knows where he is. Ed’s finally free of Izzy peering over his shoulder and sneaking up on him and his judgement. Fuck no!
Stede? Ew. No thanks!

Izzy's death is all about Ed. Ed's sadness, Ed's catharsis, Ed crying openly in front of other people (Ed! Who hid in his cabin to cry! Who was told he could not show emotion! Who kept concealing his heart because he didn't feel safe to show it!), Ed mourning someone he cared for as he could never mourn his father, Ed being supported by the people who love him.
Izzy's last words are an apology to Ed, an acceptance of Ed, and a releasing of Ed.
It's all about Ed.

imagine finding an abandoned house and thinking you can maybe take some stuff from it but instead you find a troupe of the worst theatre gays you’ve ever seen putting on the most unconvincing and disorganized production and the scariest serial killer you’ve ever heard of who seems to be just hanging out with them enjoying the show. like what was going through the minds of those dutch merchants. are they okay

This play, The Princess Bride, was captivating. The flyer promised ‘fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles’ and it delivered on every promise. After sitting mostly still and pretty quiet for so so long, Ed was now rambling on excitedly as they began their walk home. Well, Stede was walking and Ed was skipping and hopping and walking backwards at times, too excited to simply walk.
“Shrieking eels, Stede! Can you imagine? Throw some dick overboard during a raid and the sea starts shrieking?”
****
What do our favorite innkeepers think of The Princess Bride?
Ed loves it.
Stede … isn’t quite there.

When Izzy has the gall to say ‘I fed your darkness’, as if Edward were some passive lump taking in Izzy’s poison to enhance his own with no resistance, Ed’s response is actually this…
Tumblr media
Ed fought so hard time and again to resist Izzy's darkness in later years. It wasn’t Ed’s darkness that was fed. Izzy poured his darkness onto Ed’s soft broken soul, which absorbed it until it couldn’t cope under the weight. The darkness was external to Ed.
So, yeah, I don’t have much time for Izzy’s deathbed, I’m-about-to-meet-my-maker-so-better-confess mutterings. It’s still an unreliable narrative as always.

There’s something with Ed/Taika that just blow my mind every time I think about it. I simply CANNOT - no matter how hard I try - see Taika throught Ed. I don’t know, when he plays Ed, the man fucking disapear. I feel like a child watching a magic trick. And no, it’s not the beard or the costume (maybe the hair a little?)
I don’t have this impression at all with the others. And I don’t think it means he’s a better comedian or anything, but it’s really really impressive, honestly.
(Actually there’s one exception and… yeah, it’s the « im your captain » scene. …idk man.)

Izzy’s such a non-character it’s hilarious. He’s stupid, he’s venal, he’s a poser whose main talents seem to be fucking things up and yelling at other people for fucking things up. He gets bested in physical combat multiple times by a man who can’t climb a ladder. His major personality trait is “swearing” and he’s not even good at that. No one takes him seriously without Ed to back him up. He has no emotional intelligence and he’s a terrible sailor who thinks he’s God’s gift to piracy.
His most significant character growth is “becomes slightly less terrible” before he just dies as a result of once again failing a very basic assignment. His big speech is entirely a result of the ethos of a man he continues to despise for his femmeness. Every bit of advice he gives is the wrong one. The only way to make him emotionally and psychologically complex or sympathetic is to lift whole pieces of other characters and just slap them onto him.
What a wet cardboard cutout of a character and fantastic symbol of toxic masculinity who has somehow been elevated as the “true protagonist.”
Congrats to OFMD for exposing the toxic masculinity, misogyny, and racism embedded within people who have managed to wholly fucking miss the point that is emblazoned on every corner of the show.
