I want to preface this by saying I love fandom. I love being active in fandom, I love reading fic and writing fic and looking at the amazing art and edits and gifs. But my god it is so fucking important to not let fandom become your entire personality or let fandom be the only thing that brings you joy in life.

In our lifetime, hell, in the last decade, we've watched JK Rowling become one of, it not the, leading voice in anti-trans hate. We've watched beloved authors be credibly accused of sexual harassment. We've seen decades old horror stories come out about people who were beloved by basically everyone (Bill Cosby). Hell, we watched Elon Musk go from kind of weird tech guy to fucking Nazi.

If you let something become your entire personality, you're going to have a really bad time if the creator ends up being a shit bag (or it the creator turns into a shit bag as they become more rich and famous and powerful and are surrounded by people who won't tell them no).

I think a part of the reason so many people have trouble disengaging from Harry Potter because they've made it a core part of who they are instead of a piece of media they enjoy. I know I'm very online, but people don't seem to understand that by buying a Harry Potter video game you're directly funding JK Rowling's anti-trans agenda. That money goes to her and she's more than happy to spend it ruining the lives of trans people, especially trans women.

So please, for the love of god, have things you enjoy outside of fandom. It's a hell of a lot easier to stop giving your money to billionaires who turn out to be shitty when you've got other things you can spend your time on.
