Even though I love Psychonauts 2 just a bit more than the first, in my opinion, the campers were way more interesting than the interns.

Rubbing my hands together let's go
Chell is a mute, fully-trained Psychonaut with a specialty in psi-blast (perfect aim and control of her emotions) and enough skill in levitation to not be hurt from long falls, but she can't sustain it. She's sent to investigate Aperture but becomes trapped there, prompting senior agents Sasha and Milla to embark on a rescue mission.
GLaDOS is fascinated by this silent government agent who solves her tests in ways she's never seen before. It's definitely cheating, but HOW? Something nags at her though, and it's only later that she realizes: a long-dead woman named Caroline may have had these strange powers too.
Wheatley is here to help this weird human in the hopes that she can help him, too, as it seems that whatever vat of acid she must have fallen into has actually given her superpowers. He is a sort of "android" built like ATLAS or P-body, but scrawny and easily knocked over.
A large part of this involves going into GLaDOS and Wheatley's minds, of course, though I don't know what leads up to it. Both of their mental landscapes are the facility, since that's their entire world, but viewed in entirely different ways. For Wheatley everything is sprawling and enormous, broken and overgrown with plants like in The Courtesy Call, and overrun with Bad Ideas. His world is FILLED with mental constructs with wild personalities who all give terrible advice and directions that make no sense. I don't know what the end goal of his mental world is. Maybe it's a Milkman situation where you accidentally unlock something that makes everything worse, but it's the only way to progress. Have to break a few eggs, you know?
In GLaDOS's mind, the facility is perfectly mapped out and as pristine as an Apple store. There are no mental constructs in her mind, not even Censors. It's empty and almost silent, just like the first Portal game, but the ground isn't completely solid. If you find just the right place you can fall through into the tangled chaos underneath, and realize just how flimsy the put-together facade on top actually is.

I haven't seen Sonic Prime, but let me ponder this...
Let's make Whispering Rock a psychic wilderness camp out in the jungle. Oleander brandishes a machete (with a cork on the end) and FULLY EMBRACES the jungle lifestyle. Sasha hates this arrangement and possibly doesn't set foot outside without a hazmat suit. Milla enjoys the colors and beauty of all the flowers, fruits, and animals around them. I'm imagining the whole camp built like a Swiss Family Robinson type thing with treehouses, thatched/palm roofs, and pulley systems. It's near the coast, with an island out to sea that has an old, abandoned factory.
Instead of bears and cougars, the camp is menaced by jaguars and caimans. Ford is... around, but the other agents really don't like him wandering around the jungle. Sasha and Milla probably insist he stays close to them, not that he listens. There's still a psitanium meteorite here, but I'm thinking it's underwater, maybe at the bottom of a cenote, where Ford has his sanctuary built around the walls. It's not the most practical solution, and the deep water fills him with unease at remembering Maligula, but there's something almost warm and familiar about it, too.
All the campers are here, plus one monkey in a camp t-shirt who outperforms all the other kids at just about every psychic ability.
Enter Jungle Raz, who travels with his close-knit family around the jungle but never to any islands because they can't cross water. He likes to set wild animals on fire with his mind but longs for more, and after hearing about the camp he's eager to explore it and meet new people. He does not fall out of the tree while spying on them, but I'm not sure what his plan was beyond that. I can imagine him swinging onto the stage on a vine and announcing that he's going to be a Psychonaut.
The story probably plays out largely the same with different set dressing, but I think it would lead to cool designs. Also Linda is a mutated piranha.

My first question is, how did this happen? Did his parents have an extreme change of heart? Or what I think is more likely: Loboto pulled a Sasha and ran away from home as soon as his parents had a bad reaction to the bent spoons. Given what we know about his parents, I doubt they'd go after him or even report him as missing. They'd probably wipe any record of him and pretend they never had a kid. Problem gone, right?
As for where little Loboto would go, he might try to find extended family to stay with, if he has any, unless he thinks they might turn him in to his parents. Eventually, well... where might any gangly psychic runaway kid end up, in a time before the Psychonauts existed and there was a nice summer camp to break into?
I think he should join the circus.
So this would probably be a large circus where he's just one small act. He's clever, so in this age of hatred toward psychics he might figure out a way to perform using his powers without the audience or even most of his coworkers realizing he's psychic (maybe his boss knows and gets away with paying him almost literal peanuts because a. he's a runaway kid who barely knows what money is and b. if Loboto starts asking for more money he can rat the kid out to the police, or at least threaten to). Maybe Loboto meets other young secret psychics among the performers/staff and actually makes some friends.
As he gets older, maybe he learns skills to become something of a medic, too, helping out with injuries and being a little too enthusiastic about being the only one who knows how best to pull a tooth (everyone is living on a diet of hot dogs and cotton candy so cavities are abundant). He does weird science experiments behind the caravans and the goldfish that are given out as prizes to kids and their unwilling parents are a little more... ambulatory than they used to be.
Catching up with the present, who knows? Maybe Oleander finds out about Loboto's skills while the circus is in town and hires him after the show, neglecting to tell him exactly where they're going to get the brains that'll go in these tanks at first, but needing SOMEONE who knows something about surgery. Maybe this circus is even something of a friendly(?) rival to the Aquatos and Raz actually knows who Loboto is upon running into him during Oleander's scheme. Maybe Raz even had suspicions about Loboto being psychic and considered him kind of a person to look up to.
I can see an aghast Raz trying to stop him: "What are you doing here? You're better than this!"
Without looking at him, Loboto just quietly says, "Sorry, kid, you just never knew me that well."
Alternatively, heck, maybe Loboto gets discovered at the circus by Ford and becomes the youngest member of the Psychic Eight with a specialty in telekinesis and time bubble. Now THAT would be a bizarre route.
This might be fun- send me a short, one-sentence Psychonauts AU idea (or UA) and I’ll talk a bit about how I think it might play out
