Review: Musical reminiscing with Bobby Broom's Organi-Sation

Last summer, Chicago guitarist Bobby Broom put together a new organ trio at the behest of Steely Dan, which wanted an opening act for its “Jamalot Ever After” tour.

Broom obliged, creating his Organi-Sation, a band that put the jazz guitarist in front of Steely Dan’s huge and devoted audience in a whirlwind three months of performances. But that unit – with Ben Paterson at the organ and Kobie Watkins and Makaya McCraven playing drums on varying dates – hasn’t been performing since the Steely Dan tour.

Until Friday night, when Broom reconvened the musicians for a weekend run at the Green Mill, which launched what amounts to the band’s second act: The trio will open for Steely Dan again at Ravinia on Friday and Saturday, with a recording session to follow.

Jazz guitarist Bobby Broom's hit release, "My Shining Hour" climbed up to #9 for the week of 10.27. 14, according to JazzWeek, which surveys North America's jazz radio stations. The album is up 10 into the Top 10 again, after having dropped out for the first time in over a month to 19 last week. "My Shining Hour," a Renaissance album of tunes from The Great American Songbook, has spent seven of its 10 weeks in the top 10, with two weeks at #3.

The recording was done using old-school recording techniques and laid down on to eight track tape. Bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer Makaya McCraven contribute to The Bobby Broom Trio's recording in a smooth, and seamless whole.

The trio will be playing music from the album at The Jazz Showcase in Chicago at 8p. & 10p. November 14-16, with a 4:00p. early show on Sunday the 16th.
