By now, just about everybody knows of Robin Williams' death by what appears to be suicide. Understandably, people are shocked. He's an icon of heart-warming comedy. An icon so big, I don't think we...

Anathema - Untouchable Part 1 (2012)
Album: Weather Systems (2012)
What started off as a pioneering doom metal group soon evolved into gorgeously atmospheric progressive rock. Anathema create entire worlds with their music, imprison you inside their fragile dreams, only to abruptly let you leave - with a changed outlook on things. Weather Systems in general and Untouchable in particular manage to leave nothing behind, just to reconstruct everything.

Alizée - Les collines (Never Leave You) (2010)
Album: Une enfant du siècle (2010)
Alizée’s progression as an artist is depressing. Her first two albums were great successes, but released under tight control from Mylène Farmer, her third one was a desperate attempt to continue in the same vein, but failed to attract success. For her 4th and 5th albums, she took risks and developed her own musical style, but then quickly threw it out again earlier this year upon releasing her 6th album Blonde, an album that jumps on every trend but does none of them well. Les collines (Never Leave You) is testament to what she could have become had she continued exploring more interesting musical directions, a genuinely powerful, classic synth dance track.

きゃりーぱみゅぱみゅ (Kyary Pamyu Pamyu) - きらきらキラー (Kirakira Kiraa/Sparkly Killer) (2014)
Album: ピカピカふぁんたじん (Pikapika Fantajin/Sparkly Fantasian) (2014)
Kyary started off as a gimmick, “look how weird she is!” seemed to be the intended reaction. Yet with her latest and third album, she’s starting to develop a unique identity within the Pop business. There’s a degree of quality control and overall direction involved that her first two albums lacked - the birth of a promising Pop artist? It’s hard to dislike somebody who just releases such consistently fun music and retains the ability to poke fun at herself.

Miguel - Adorn (2012)
Album: Kaleidoscope Dream (2012)
Usually, being slimy is the last thing you want to be. And Miguel is as slimy as they get. Pretentious, narcissistic, self-absorbed - he’s the kind of person you’d slap if you met them. Yet, for some reason impossible to comprehend to me, Miguel has found a way to make it work for him. He knows he’s a douche, he uses it, he plays with it and subverts it - and he has great tracks backing him up.
