This Sucks

The worst thing any writer can ever do is to begin something they write with, "This sucks," or some variation of. When I read self-deprecating words immediately before a story, I go into your story with an unfortunate mindset - I don't want your writing to be bad, but you've suggested it, and writing is almost already entirely power of suggestion. If you want me to suspend my disbelief for you, but then have the courtesy to warn me how "bad" your writing is, part of the illusion is ruined. The thing here is, your writing isn't usually bad. Not that there aren't improvements to be made, but everyone has improvements that need making. Your writing, because you took the time to write it, and because you are open to constructive feedback, is actually very good. You don't need to write like a dead poet to write well. So here's the biggest piece of advice I'll ever give you. It's improved my writing tenfold. Never, ever mention, at any point in your notes or your story, that you think the writing sucks. Own it. The writing should standalone. You do not need to justify your creativity. As writers, we know the power of writing something down. To write it down makes it tangible. I promise, your writing will suck a lot less if you stop writing your unfounded destructive self-criticism down.

I went to a baseball game today, and instead of watching the game, I watched the pitcher and came up with a whole baseball AU where Bucky is a pitcher for this team and their biggest rival is playing them and Bucky is killing it and striking everyone out but then Steve fucking Rogers, all 90 pounds of him, comes up and Bucky is like jeez this kid can barely hold the bat and no one is expecting anything but then Steve hits a homer and everyone is like holy shit and Bucky decides right there that he wants to know everything about Steve and possibly his body also. And then everything is great and Bucky gets signed to a triple A team which is one below the majors and they're really happy but them there's an accident and Bucky falls and has to have an arm amputated so he can't play anymore and they're sad. So anyway I drew Bucky as a pitcher (badly) and I'm totally writing this story. Plus, plenty of room for "pitcher"/"catcher" jokes trolololol

Totally just referenced this behavior in my Stucky fanfic, the Secret of the Angry Days :)

Sometimes when Bucky can’t sleep he goes wandering around Stark Tower. Somehow his footsteps always lead to Tony’s workshop. Tony never comments or asks questions, just drapes a blanket around Bucky’s shoulders when Bucky finally does manage to fall asleep.

While Bucky is recovering and getting back into everyday life he has a lot of good and bad days, but there are days when he seems really angry for no apparent reason and won't talk about it. Steve does his best to be supportive on the angry days but he can't figure out what he's doing wrong. He starts eliminating things that could possibly be setting him off until he discovers the last remaining possibility. Bucky fucking hates it when he wears his goddamn khakis.

Look, I made it a proper post! Based off zombikki's post where Steve is a skinny little tattoo artist who should be a librarian and Bucky is all smitten and shit.
