Jonathan "Johnny" Crane was the youngest son of a failing chemist that lived in the countryside. His older brothers constantly picked on him and one day they strapped Johnny to a stake and dressed him in scarecrow clothes. He was left in the field for hours, his mother only heard his screams for help at sundown after the crows already pecked his arms and neck until they we're bleeding.

After that incident, Johnny developed a crippling fear of crows and started setting traps to try to kill them and would even find the nests and smash all the eggs.

Years after his parents passed away he moved to Gotham City to find a new life but he hadn't many job opportunities. He used his knowledge of chemistry that he learned with his father and started developing drugs for a gang in the Narrows.

Johnny became tired of being looked down by the gang members and developed a Fear Toxin to use on the gang leader and all his most loyal henchmen. He took over the mantle of Scarecrow as a nod to his childhood fear and used his Toxin to take over Gotham's underworld.
