What makes PaintedStars so compelling for you?

many many things! but i will keep it very broad and an overall summary, because trust there's more.

{mostly pertains to my chrysalis enigma au and it will be tagged as such} {also i will try not to keep this long sorry}

okay so for starters the whole supernatural being / human thing is something i do enjoy. it's an interesting dynamic, sue me. how it pertains to kit and stella- kit wants to be human! badly! and stella, while at first avoidant of the whole supernatural thing, comes to really be knowledgeable in daoist teachings and helping fight back demons, even on her own (like her various talisman). she sooo would find the supernatural world fascinating, like kit finds humans fascinating. it's also slightly different than paintedflame or paintedvisions as stella has no inherent powers. she's her own force.

stella is someone who has all her ducks in a neat row and does diligent research. she's incredibly intelligent and has planned years of her life in advance, even keeping tabs on her friends (michael, for example). and no she's not secretly under immense pressure, she's fine, thanks (/j)

kit is someone who is never sure of who he is or what he plans to do. he wants normalcy but can never obtain it, whether it be outside circumstances or nature v nurture. he is always adapting, but never given time to breathe and figure himself out.

they're so wildly different in those regards but that's what makes them work so well-they're what eachother needs. kit needs more stability, stella needs more freedom (which ties into my own personal headcanons that i need to speak on separately) but they're both willing to understand eachothers side (yes, even in kits case,) and they're two teens who act more mature than they should

kit would like how stella is so thorough when planning things, he would like how she's sweet but also isn't a pushover, he would like her interest in his world that he can't escape from. stella would like how creative kit is, how he's willing to try to be better and make up for all the shit he did, as well as letting her be more messy and immature without judgement.

they're really an opposites attract that also happen to have a lot in common!! they definitely take a while to work up to being anything more than somewhat friends, but when they do, they find one another completely fascinating, for lack of better term.

okayyyy i think that's like a good overall summary of them. i'll make a little stella hc post bc it's very relevant to how they play out (based on observations from the show, ofc) and while it's not like everything i enjoy about them i didn't really feel like my 700 little tidbits were worth putting here for the moment lmao

Chrysalis Enigma AU

Plot: When Kit wakes, there is a guilt that hits him hard and heavy. Stuck in Bixi of all places, he must find a way out and figure out how to apologize to everyone he's hurt. Stella finds him instead. With a month deadline, he must prove himself to her in order to see Jentry. and maybe they both get more than they bargained for in the process.

ohhhkay so uh. yeah. im gonna chat about the dynamic i made up in my head!!!! yayy!!

i dont think i actually went in depth about these two (aside from the au i posted, but whatever) but this is all for my fic, which you can find HERE . kit survives au!

so after mr cheng stabbed kit, kit wasnt actually dead. flora and zhongkui, who are more informed over painted skins, knew he wasnt, so zhongkui opted to take kit under the guise that he would give him a proper burial in bixi where his body would be safe. jentry was comfortable with this.

only, again, kit wasnt dead. hes asleep for about three months before he wakes and, even though hes desperate to return to the mortal world, is stuck in bixi for the unforseen future. in the meantime, him and zhongkui form a bond (i joke theyre like a boss and his unpaid intern, but they become very much like father and son).

zhongkui is probably the first adult who actually cares about his well being. despite knowing kits past, despite having his own history dealing with painted skins, he recognizes that kit is a kid, a traumatized manipulated teenager at that, and is a lot more gentle with him than anyone ever has. kit is unsure of how to deal with that.

but he also respects kit as a person, and goes at his pace of comfort. he wants to stay silent all day? thats fine. wants to speak and ask him questions? thats perfectly fine too. kit always has his full attention, his words matter, and the only topics that are off limits are jentry chau and co. zhongkui is a calm, more laid back presence that kit needs to open up. plus, zhongkui really has no want or need to lie to kit. if he feels that a topic shouldn't be discussed, he redirects the conversation.

zhongkui is also very playful with him! he'll tease kit and and tell him exaggerated tales of his past, and he even picks up on the slang kids say these days (which makes kit cringe....) but once kit starts lightly joking back, even bluntly, zhongkui finds him very amusing in his own way.

and since kit is stuck in his painted skin form, hes not very expressive. at least, to most, but zhongkui is used to any subtle changes in the spirits he holds, so kit is actually incredibly expressive to him. finds that kit pouts a lot, places it in his moody teen folder.

he also takes being responsible for kit very seriously and tries his best. kit is wondering what he ever did to deserve that kindness.

zhongkui and kit!! kit’s probably like 7 ish here

in this au kit is kind of bratty and really clingy to dad once he’s used to his new home life. he’s the type of kid to hide behind him and glare at you if he’s not a fan. zhongkui is pretty much the same as in canon, which is very very chill. he also adores his ‘kitkat’ a ton and will listen to his endless rambles and answer all of his silly questions.

So is the Beach Boy AU still set in Riverfork? Cause the AU makes me picture California 😅

This au is not set in Riverfork! (Save for the Chau's living there) but I imagine Zhongkui and Kit live a ways away haha. I haven't decided on a specific place yet, but a few inspirations were Santa Monica, some beaches along the Gulf Coast, and various piers/boardwalks! However where they live has a much, muchhhh smaller population haha. So California isn't too far off a guess!

what was Kit’s life before being adopted by Zhongkui? was he just in an orphanage? was he in foster care, if so, what were his experiences like?

He was with a foster family since he was an infant! (Specifically, his ''parents'' from ep 5 in the show)

They were...not good parents to him at all. They were the type who took him in because it would look good for their image, but really left Kit to his own devices when he was really little. They treated him marginally well in public, but mostly forgot about him any other time. A quote he was taught was 'children shouldn't be seen or heard'.

And by the time Zhongkui had him, Kit had clear issues from his previous home life- very quiet, some food insecurity, and really withdrawn. Zhongkui was very patient with him and got him all the help he needed, but it took a while for Kit to trust him. But once he does, he's very attached to Zhongkui.
