Love the fact that the institute’s motto is basically just Jonah’s whole entire game plan squished into three Latin first person present tense active verbs (okay yes I know opperior is deponent so it’s actually passive but whatever). Man could not have been more obvious with that one. Putting your 1800s primarily Latin and Greek focused education to good use, I see. Good job Jonah.

Some of the ways I think Fear Entities could manifest in Big Tesco because I have nothing better to do this morning and I grew up with a lot of specific fears surrounding Big Tesco:
The Vast — it’s Big Tesco, what more needs to be said? The Vast doesn’t need to do much to manifest. Infinite IKEA is nothing compared to Infinite Tesco.
The Spiral — It’s part of the Big Tesco experience as a British child to get lost in the endless shelves and rows, and I personally almost got lost in the storage rooms while on a school trip. It’s maddening and terrifying and the Distortion should start capitalising on it. There has to be some children in the apocalypse in a ‘lost in Big Tesco’ domain.
The Lonely — Similar principle of being lost, but I have vivid memories of being a child and getting lost and looking up and seeing crowds of people with blurred faces and I felt so horrifyingly alone until I was found again. That’s also a normal Big Tesco experience.
The Buried — Leaning into the fear of debt and expenses, Tesco, like most of the UK, is plagued by inflation and shrinkflation, and is no longer the store I once knew. . . The Buried manifests as Tesco Meal Deals being £4 now and the sinking feeling you get realising that. It also manifests as the aforementioned crowds of people closing in on every turn while you stare at the meal deal section, unable to move as they press in more and more. Anyway.
The Eye — Based on this one time I embarrassed myself in store and multiple employees stared at me, and looking back the experience was somewhat thrilling, but at the time it felt like I would live with that shame my entire life. There’s always time to be Watched and Judged while in Big Tesco!
The Stranger — This is based in my own psychosis where sometimes I will look at strangers and their face looks waxy to me, but I feel like a store of fake people trying to imitate Tesco while you slowly realise more and more that something is off is a great way for the Stranger to manifest!
That’s about all I have off the top of my head. I think like three of the fears I’m marked by came from Big Tesco. It’s just the way of things.

Anyways to me the ideal jonelias dynamic is like. If it's not a constant push and pull between them what's the point. If Jonah isn't dragging Jon down into becoming more and more of a monster but Jon is making it as difficult and annoying and being a downright pain in the ass as much as possible what's the point. If they aren't psychoanalzying each other and responding to each new development with as much curiosity as they do frustration for how much more difficult it makes everything what's the point. If Jonah doesn't simultaneously grow deeply fond of his new favorite and also isn't more than happy to watch him suffer and do nothing, what's the point. If they aren't making personal digs at each other mixed with instant connection and sudden almost fondness what's the point. If Jonah doesn't sound so impressed by everytime Jon gets worse what's the point. If Jon isn't both furious at Jonah for putting him in this situation and so sure he is the Only Person capable of making it better and having this subconscious idolization of him so strong he can't shake it, what's the point. If Jon isn't the only person who doesn't realize how obsessed they are with each other, what's the point. If their worlds don't revolve around each other, even and especially when Jon hates him, what's the point. If Jon doesn't hate Jonah and immediately go to him to fix anything before he even considers bringing it up to anyone else, and none of it comes from trust anymore, just being SO sure he knows everything and could fix all of his problems and just chooses not to, what's the point. If Jonah doesn't view him as his, both his to use and his to care for, what's the point. If Jon doesn't have a desperate jittery obsession with him he's only recently beginning to notice, what's the point. If it's not weird and mutually self destructive what's the point. If Jonah isn't being dragged back into shit he hasn't felt in years, while never becoming a better person- just a little more vulnerable, a little more known (this will destroy them both and they know it), what's the point. If they aren't making each other worse and taking everything from each other and orbiting around each other and eventually destroying each other completely, WHAT is the POINT

Thinking about Martin in season 4 and how depression really does make you feel trapped and helpless and like all of your friends are distant and unreachable even though they’re technically still in your life and how you really do just go along with things even if they’re shit without ever considering that you might be able to change them because it’s easier than confronting the fact that you’re so numb you can’t feel anything anymore.

Martin is like that special brand of introvert that turns into an extrovert if there are no other extroverts to speak for the group. He seems more confident during the apocalypse because he's got Jon there and even though Jon is a literal demigod he's still not really comfortable talking to people.
Martin rolls up to the Flesh Domain Wendy's like: EXCUSE ME. He asked for no pickles.

age gap is far from the most problematic aspect of jonelias but it should be emphasized more. call Jon Jonah's boy. he would feel normal about it

Peter and Elias write the most ridiculous maudlin bittersweet love letters to each other. Elias always knows what port Peter will be at next, there's always a letter waiting, and he always sends one back. Jonah had always liked sending letters and Peter is an old fashioned guy, he likes it too. Elias is much more emotionally open in letters than he ever is in person. He expresses an honest longing for Peter and he dabs his cologne onto the paper. Peter loves it. They only see each other a few times a year but their epistolary affair is long-standing and more fulfilling than any in person relationship he has ever had.

One headcannon I really love with Jon/Jonah specifically is the hair. OG!Elias having long hair (because c’mom it fits the stoner stereotype) and Jonah cutting it cropped short once he takes over the body versus Jon, who starts his job at the institute so desperate to appear the competent and confident academic that he keeps his hair short-back-and-sides and lacking any kind of personality at all. Then it grows out during his coma and he keeps it long, a last ditch effort to keep a piece of himself human, and by the time the apocalypse has started he just… keeps it. Maybe because he can’t be bothered to cut it himself, or maybe because he feels it’s a kind of defiance against Jonah. You made me into this but you do not own me, it says. I am still myself. The humanity that you so laboriously tried to get me to shun is still here, and I wear it proudly.

One of my favorite parts of jonelias is how Jonah fusses over jons habits so much. Like yes that's his tool he's molding to give him immortality and bring about the end of the world, but he's not irresponsible. He's not smoking again, is he? Has he been getting enough sleep? What's he doing back at work so soon? Of course he can have a bed in document storage.

obsessed with the jonelias dynamic where Jon seeks validation from Elias CONSTANTLY. the world of academia is full of this dynamic and it has a rightful place in the ship <3
