i get that dean said it in one episode (specifically written to highlight that sam is hiding an active addiction and is acting off btw) but every time i see people say that sam is more like john i just have to ask like. why. how. not even trying to be a bitch here i'm genuinely curious why people believe this besides dean saying it that one time and sam also going on an epic revenge quest for his fridged blonde lost love. it takes quite literally one episode for sam to stop being a menace due to grief, like he's teasing dean and is honestly shockingly well adjusted from wendigo to dead in the water. and then by season 2 when their dad dies he's the one telling dean let's talk about it and work through our grief together and outright telling dean that he's worried about him and wants to stay. like okay. sam can be singleminded and obsessive about hunting when shit gets bad, but i don't think that outweighs the many many ways he is not like john, on purpose. sam is outwardly kind to people they meet on cases and uses empathy to get through to people 90% of the time. he looks at hunting as an obligation and does not want that life for other people, especially young people. between him and dean he's the one who tries to communicate and get dean to open up and work through emotional issues before they become poisonous. i'm not saying that either of them is a one to one reflection of john at all, BUT! if we're looking at facts? if we're looking at who these characters are and how they act and the ways they think about things? dean is the one who says things that actually sound like john dialogue. could you ever imagine sam saying 'this is a dictatorship.'
john does not show up in the show that often, but when he does, he expects blind loyalty, he gets mad at them for not contacting him when he was literally impossible to get in contact with, he resents sam for wanting out of the game, he immediately sells his soul when dean's about to die, he deems himself judge jury and executioner for what he thinks of as monstrous and won't see a gray area, he talks about how proud he is of his boys to anyone but them -- these are not things sam will ever do. these are all things dean will eventually do. just because sam is a good hunter who takes notes and has a tragic inciting incident does not make him more like john. (and just because dean was parentified does not make him more like his mom who was raised a hunter and desperately wanted to get away from the life even if it meant losing contact with her family, but that's another post). like i am not joking i want to know where this idea comes from. it does not compute to me.

people who think sam “i still think about jessica” winchester only saw her as a replacement for dean know nothing about love
I think one of the worst things to come out of this fandom was the jess/dean similarities (where they barely look alike) but everyone decided was the hc of the century bc they “look” similar? dean isn’t even blonde you guys are literally just feeding into the misogynistic ideals that this show already pushes by once again replacing an extremely central female character and turning it into a “freudian reference” to dean and sam’s incestuous relationship by saying the only reason sam dated jess was because of how similar she was to dean. would it kill you to take your shipping goggles off for ONE second and also oh I don’t know actually treat women like characters and real human beings instead of placeholders for men?

sam definitely bit dean when he got mad as a kid because how tf else is he supposed to fight back against this nine year old who weighs double what he does and also trains with a gun? and john is SO mad he’s like you do NOT bite dean, you ONLY bite strangers who try to kidnap you!!!! and anyway i think sam was that kid who got kidnapped and then returned because he wouldn’t stop singing and biting

I think the absolute horror of the scene where sam goes "i will kill myself before letting you in" to lucifer and lucifer rolls his eyes and goes "and I'll just bring you back" is soooo underrated. jared plays it so well too, the shock and the hopelessness in his eyes. lucifer feeling so possessive (ha) over sam, and sam realizing that no, he's not going to escape this unscathed, if he escapes at all. it's so tasty

dean enjoys hunting because he likes hunting down and killing monsters (also because of his canonical latent sadistic tendencies. he is a violent man and it’s not even subtext). sam rejects hunting, but eventually gives in and accepts it as his lifestyle because he feels unclean/cursed and it works as his driving force — he wants to save as many people as possible (and he enjoys the power of being able to save them). dean hunting is about violence and letting out his anger, sam hunting is about trying to “redeem” himself by using his curse/powers for good

I-I actually saw someone say this today: Jensen said something about the show being around for 14 seasons because of the two brothers. This we know isn’t true, because it was on the brink of cancellation up until the point where Misha came on in season 4. Kripke himself said that he didn’t sleep well at night until Misha came on the show, because their ratings were finally good. J & J just never give Misha the credit that he deserves. --- My eyes have been opened and I can't stop laughing.
Ratings for season 2 and 3 were very good as you can see here.  Ratings did not “finally get good” in season 4, they actually lost one milion regular viewers by the end of season 4.   Kripke never said that ratings got better because of Misha because it didn’t, he only said Misha saved the angel storyline because there was a chance that fans would hate it as much as they did the Leviathan storyline.  Fans spent the summer of 2017 preparing to hate the Jack Kline storyline but Alexander Culvart saved that storyline and Jack became an instant fan favorite.
If Supernatural was in danger of cancellation, it would be because they lost their lead star, Jared.  Shows rarely survive when they lose their lead, and when they do they limp along for one or two more seasons while fans and critics lambast them for getting worse and worse, like these shows.   Jared recently admitted that he once had planned to leave the show and met with a lawyer to break his contract without getting sued by WB.  Why do studio lose their shit if a lead star leaves before the show is syndicated?  Because millions and millions of dollars.
For a single season, CW spends at least $50 million developing several shows (150 scripts, 30 pilots) that only 6% will be aired (link).  Then only 30% of the pilots will make it past the first season (link).  So a good year means  3 shows survived the first season without getting cancelled .  CW’s track record is 30% of the first season survivor will go on to crawl toward the season 4 finishing line. (link)  If you’re doing the math that means an average of ONE show from CW’s $50 million dollar pilot season has lasted long enough to be syndicated and finally make some profit for the studio & network (details).
Is it any wonder that young actors  like Jessica Alba, Jared Padalecki, Tom Welling who are inexperienced in leading a show became stressed, depressed, and unhappy?  They are under enormous pressure to make back $50 million dollars for their network.  Jared’s mental illness and the subsequent breakdown in season 3 was when Kripke started to lose sleep because if Jared leaves the show before it could be syndicated then Kripke, Singer, and WB will be financially screwed.  Worse, the writer’s strike happened during season 3, shortening it from 22 episodes to 16.   They need 88 episodes to be syndicated which is supposed to happen in season 4 but now delayed to season 5, which makes the network very unhappy that they have to commit to spending money on a show for another year.  It would be like a college student taking 5 years instead of 4 years to graduate and the parents have to spend another $10,000 just for their spawn’s room and board.
There was much speculation in the fandom why Kripke went to see Jared before season 5 filmed.  Remember at the time Jared’s breakdown in season 3 was kept secret, none of us knew.  Whatever Kripke said to Jared, season 5 filming started without a hitch.  The 6th episode (”I Believe Our Children Are Our Future”) is the much needed 88th episode.  After episode 92 aired on Nov 12, 2009, it was announced that SPN was syndicated and TNT aired reruns the following January.  Season 5′s viewership were lower than season 3 & 4 but that didn’t matter because of $$$yndication! Hooray!   We are $$$aved!
Misha/Cas is irrelevant to ratings, Nielsen ratings have shown that (example here).  Misha’s Q - popularity score was last measured during season 8 by Marketing Evaluation, Inc and it was too low among the general audience and Misha’s status has been jerked around before and since then.  Misha went from guest (season 4) to regular (season 5 & 6)  to guest (season 7 & 8)  to regular (season 9 - 12) and back to guest (season 13)   Don’t Misha’s minions find that status whiplash even a little bit strange?  For somebody whom minions claim “saved” SPN from cancellation, why would his status get carelessly jerked around so much?
The only actor that “saved” Supernatural from cancellation is Jared Padalecki staying on the show because he is the lead actor playing the lead protagonist.  Most shows get cancelled when they lose their lead actor.
