some thoughts on mystra's relationship with gale

idk if this will be considered a hot take or whatever but i'd been thinking about the dynamic between the two for a while and i'd like to imagine i have a perspective on it that could add to the discussion (or not, lmao) and i'm too annoying not to put it down into words

i'll start by saying i'm a teacher and have been teaching for a while. i'm looking at mystra from a teacher's perspective - a teacher of magic, not just a 'mother' per se but solely as a figure of education. a lot of times, people really don't realise how much influence teachers have over their pupils. we have so so so so much influence, so much authority and implicit trust placed in us from our students, regardless of how young/old a student is.

additionally, as a teacher i cannot state how incredibly weird and uncomfortable it would be and is for any student to take a personal interest in me even platonically - it's so easy to take that boundary and abuse it. if a teacher wanted to cause emotional harm to a student, they could do so with a disturbing amount of ease. it's genuinely very important that teachers recognise this.

so with mystra as gale's personal teacher and mentor, it creeps me the fuck out that mystra entirely overstepped the boundary of teacher into that of lover. she took an implicit and complete trust in her as an authority figure to pursue a romantic interest in a student that had been in her sights since he was underage. that is so unfathomably creepy and wrong to do that it just makes me so repulsed.

this isn't even getting into the other components of mystra's reputation among wizards as a literal goddess, but even in this dynamic it's so gross and morally wrong

thought about gale suddenly and how we're not quite sure when mystra came to him but, he was decently young and she chose him because of his power amd potential with the weave, how he could devote himself to her. she shaped, she groomed him.

the moment she leaves him, abandons him, gale dekarios who has devoted himself to her, is after the orb drains much of his original power. he's no longer an incredibly powerful archmage. if you look at his behavior, his eagerness to please and talk to tav/durge/whatever origin character, he wants to he useful. he wants to be useful so bad because he devoted himself to mystra and when he was no longer powerful, when he was weakened by the orb...she took her "love" for him away.

was gale smart for the orb business? not particularly. was he at fault? sure, basically. But you try begging for someone to love you when all they love is the power they have over you, rethink gale.

I don't get on here and say shit often but my friends are def sick of hearing about gale dekarios of waterdeep. but I don't understand how people in the baldur's gate 3 community do not like him. He has flaws but at his core, he just wanted praise and approval. The weave he inadvertently consumed was meant to be returned to Mystra whom he loved. Who he thought loved him in return. Gale wasn't power hungry, he was impatient and begging to be loved.

Beyond that, he's a genuinely good guy. He's a lil messed up by the corrupted ambition within him but it comes down to the fact that the goddess who chose him, loved him, praised him has all but abandoned him for daring to beg for power she had given him a taste of, almost like she was fucking teasing him. I think that might mess anyone up. He spent a year in a tower, with his fucking cat. You think he's gonna be not a lil cringe?

ANyway, I love gale and the people who don't love him really just don't understand, really, I think. You get approval for not being an asshole, so making him be your friend/romancing him really isn't that hard tbh.

Now that the percy jackson d+ series is in full swing, I can't wait for future seasons when we can start editing them all to how far we've come by matchbox twenty again because my god, I love matchbox twenty. Matchbox twenty Renaissance. If matchbox twenty has 1 fan, it's me. If matchbox twenty has no fans, I am dead.

I can't wait for all the music we used to associate with this series to one, be relevant again. And two, remind us of a childhood we thought was out of reach but really is right there and now a new generation gets to experience, love and grow up with percy like we did.

This was all over the place. I just got so excited.

When I tell you that Hodari Pavel is Pedro Pascal coded I don't just mean he's got that same squarish face and slightly curved nose, or that he's a sad single dad with a wonderful gremlin child. I mean he's a prospector like Ezra with the Joel Miller drawl and the Din Djarin "My dick is big and my back is sore" walk. I mean when you romance him he fidgets with his hands and digs the ball of his thumb into his palm while flashing you shy puppydog eyes.

And I mean the devs damn near admitted it themselves:

i tried to hire a hypeman and the cheapest one (free) was a fucking wizard and now i cant get rid of her. she keeps saying shit like "she speaketh true" and "very wise milady" everytime i say fuckin anything and if she sees a car she tries to attack it with chain lightning. fucking embarassing honestly

Having ocs with your friends is so silly because you get to toss around ideas with them and go !!! When they say something great or funny. Normalize just enjoying creativity with your friends. Normalize role play and the stories it can create and how it is a legitimate form of storytelling.
