Fanfiction Authors: HEADS UP

(Non-authors, please RB to signal boost to your author friends!)

An astute reader informed me this morning that one of my fics (Children of the Future Age) had been pirated and was being sold as a novel on Amazon:

(And they weren't even creative with their cover design. If you're going to pirate something that I spent a full year of my life writing, at least give me a pretty screenshot to brag about later. Seriously.)

I promptly filed a DMCA complaint to have it removed, but I checked out the company that put it up -- Plush Books -- and it looks like A LOT of their books are pirated fic. They are by no means the only ones doing this, either -- the fact that """publishers""" can download stories from AO3 in ebook format and then reupload them to Amazon in just a few clicks makes fic piracy a common problem. There are a whole host of reasons why letting this continue is bad -- including actual legal risk to fanfiction archives -- but basically:

IF YOU ARE A FANFIC AUTHOR WITH LONG AND/OR POPULAR WORKS, PLEASE CHECK AMAZON TO SEE IF YOUR STORIES HAVE BEEN PIRATED.

You can search for your fics by title, or by text from the description (which is often just copied wholesale from AO3 as well). If you find that someone has stolen your work and is selling it as their own, you can lodge a DMCA complaint (Amazon.com/USA site; other countries have different systems). If you haven't done this before, it's easy! Here's a tutorial:

HOW TO FILE A COPYRIGHT COMPLAINT FOR STOLEN WORK ON AMAZON.COM:

First, go to this form. You'll need to be signed into your Amazon account.

Select the radio buttons/dropdown options (shown below) to indicate that you are the legal Rights Owner, you have a copyright concern, and it is about a pirated product.

Enter the name of your story in the Name of Brand field.

In the Link to the Copyrighted Work box, enter a link to the story on AO3 or whatever site your work is posted on.

In the Additional Information box, explain that you are the author of the work and it is being sold without your permission. That's all you really need. If you want, you can include additional information that might be helpful in establishing the validity of your claim, but you don't have to go into great detail. You can simply write something like this:

I am the author of this work, which is being sold by [publisher] without my permission. I originally published this story in [date/year] on [name of site], and have provided a link to the original above. On request, I can provide documentation proving that I am the owner of the account that originally posted this story.

In the ASIN/ISBN-10 field, copy and paste the ID number from the pirated copy's URL. You'll find this ten-digit number in the Amazon URL after the word "product," as in the screenshot below. (If the URL extends beyond this number, you can ignore everything from the question mark on.) Once this number has been added, Amazon will pull the product information automatically and add it to the complaint form, so you can check the listing title and make sure it's correct.

Finally, add your contact information to the relevant fields, check the "I have read and accept the statements" box, and then click Submit. You should receive an email confirmation that Amazon has received the form.

Please share this information with your writer friends, keep an eye out for/report pirated works, and help us keep fanfiction free and legally protected!

The night air was cool, damp from earlier rain. The faint glow of streetlights shimmered off the wet pavement as you exited Toji's home onto the curb outside. Your phone buzzed softly— Naoya again. You hesitated, staring down at the screen, thumb hovering over the notification before you glanced back at the darkened house.

The silence that followed your last words had been deafening, a void Toji filled by grabbing his keys and walking out without so much as a glance.

He still hadn’t returned.

And now all you had was the memory of his empty expression before he walked away.

Why did you say that?

You wanted to tell him the truth—all of it—in a secluded place.

Spending time around the Zenin family did you no favors in communication. The malicious double speak had you constantly on guard making sure you didn't slip up. You mistook cruelty for honesty, mistook jabs and accusations for constructive truths and vice versa.

Toji was a Zenin, too.

Chapter 16 of His Heart Beats.

Summary: Several unexpected guests arrive on Toji's doorstep —He also realizes something he hadn't considered regarding "power" and what it means.

“I’m wet.”

A short, exasperated bark of laughter escaped him again. "And that's my fault? Hey—I mean, if it’s me you’re crediting for it, I’m flattered.”

"Fug'you. I'm literal..." Your words faded into a slurred mumble as you fumbled to pull the wet shirt over your head. With his begrudging help, the drenched garment finally gave way, thudding onto the floor. Underneath, you sported a bedazzled golden rectangle bra that left little to the imagination— enough to cover the essentials but nothing more.

Next you peeled off your sweats and boots, setting them aside to reveal a matching pleated micro skirt paired with a white scrunch thong that sat gracefully on your hips, drawing his appreciative gaze.

He let his gaze wander over your body, smirking at the sight. “The hell is this? Sailor Moon?” he quipped. Your cotton candy hair and the over-the-top outfit screamed some sort of magical girl fantasy. A slow, mocking smirk played on his lips as he leaned back. “And here I thought I’d have to work for it,” he drawled, sarcastically.

The hospital room felt like a cage—too clean, too white, and too damned bright for Toji’s taste. The acrid scent of antiseptic seemed to crawl under his skin, a constant reminder that this place revolved around wounds and recovery. He stood by the window, arms folded tight, shoulders rigid beneath the fluorescent lights. Outside, a bleak sky spread over the city, offering no comfort. His own reflection in the glass gave him a cold, assessing stare, as though mocking whatever shred of humanity he still clung to.

Behind him, you lay against the raised hospital bed, a thin blanket draped across your shoulders. You looked pale and exhausted, eyes flicking around the sterile space as if searching for an escape route. A heart monitor beeped in its steady, repetitive rhythm—a stark reminder that you were still fragile. He kept his distance, knowing full well his presence did little to soothe anyone. But he had a job to do.

“My son will be here soon,” Toji announced, his gaze cutting toward you for half a second. “When he gets here, just tell them what you know. Don’t worry about incriminating me.”

Even without turning fully, he saw your expression falter. The idea of him—being a father never fit most people’s expectations. Like a hurricane nurturing a seedling, it didnt fit. And yet, sadly it was true. He flexed his fingers, trying to ignore the jolt of tension that always came when he had to mention family.

“He’s nothing like me,” he went on, More an admission of guilt than an attempt to comfort. The words felt rehearsed because they were. He’d said them to himself enough times to almost believe them. Almost. “I’m not... the fatherly type.”
