Brynn stilled, hearing an unknown voice. She attempts to relax her muscles, feeling the burning still simmering under the surface. It wouldn’t due to frighten someone, especially someone who was not at fault for her anger.

Often she felt apathetic, it had been awhile since she had felt such anger. Enough to burn.

Turning to the newcomer slowly, her small attempt at a smile comes out more like an awkward grimace.

“Y-Yes... I’m fine,” giving a quick sigh, she continues, “But if you have a water bottle on you, that’d be really helpful...”

Feeling the pain increase on her temple, she quickly covers it to guard any of the visible burning. Her skin still held a slight flicker of light underneath it from her fading anger, however.

“Sorry if I, well... gave you a fright.”

ok, there’s a thing I gotta address-

this girl’s lifeblood is constantly burning, and pain like that can make you kinda irritable at times ok??

soooooo do yourself a favour, and don’t ask about her dreaded time of the month when, again, her blood is literally fire

“That is a bit difficult to explain— ”

She gives a weak sigh, at least this means the burning on the outside had stopped before he found her.

“ —but it involves lots of heat, and a bit of a fight. Do you have anything that might take the bite out of really bad burns?”

If she was lucky, and Brynn wasn’t going to hold out too much hope, this guy wouldn’t turn her away on account of her mutation. It wouldn’t be the first time.

“Candy and pain meds it is.”  He grinned, reaching to grab a little of both for her and smiling.  “So how did you manage to pass out in front of my ambulance from blood loss?”

She breaks off, briefly grimacing.

“I could really use the pain meds.”

She did not need a device to measure the girl’s growing frustration. But she at least could give her some good news.

“There is no need for an infirmary visit. I stopped you well in advance to prevent that. I would recommend rest for the remainder of the day. I will inform your teachers.”

She could see the girl’s healing at work, thanks to the bracelet. The child was lucky to have it. Without any sort of healing factor, she would most certainly have succumbed to her mutation long ago. Danger only hoped she knew how lucky she was. Many with such volatile mutations had to live with the pain their powers caused them for far longer, with greater intensity as well. If they lived at all. But, she would not bring this up. The girl needed positivity , not a lecture on genetic gratitude.

“Know this Brynn. You are doing well. I would not tell you this if it was not the truth. Lying would be pointless, and also a disservice to you.”

“Now rest. Or strain yourself, and disappoint not only I, but yourself.”

No required infirmary visits was a pretty good consolation prize, Brynn decided, as well as the further encouragement from her instructor. 

“That’s a relief... I’m fairly certain the medical staff isn’t thrilled with my repeated visits lately.”

She tried her best not to look too excited by the praise given, as she theorized that apparent overconfidence would draw a follow up lecture reiterating the necessity for caution, but failed to keep a slightly giddy smile off her face. Brynn felt she couldn’t deny that at least a fraction of truth must exist in Danger’s statements, considering her analytical abilities.

“Oh! Well, I’m glad you think so- I know we’re supposed to remain objective but sometimes it’s really hard to look at yourself and acknowledge improvement and-”

The teen broke off, shaking her head. With a small smile, she shrugged.

“It doesn’t really matter. Thanks. Really. I’ll definitely rest up so that I can get back at it again soon.”

“Well, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Cantet.”

New students came all the time as of late, it seemed. She couldn’t help but find Brynn’s hair to be pretty, but it would have been a little strange to comment on it. Or maybe she was over thinking things. It had been a while since she’d gotten a full night’s sleep, and that did wonders for destroying conversational filters.

“I hope you’re time here’s been treating you well.” Her eyes flit to Brynn’s last pencil and back. “Can I ask what your power is?”

“It’s been,” she falters for a moment, “uh, a bit overwhelming, but nice.”

Though a tad anxious, Brynn decides just telling her would be better than leaving it to the imagination. It isn’t as if her mutation is very shocking anyways, just a bit difficult to word at times. Besides, people tended to assume the worst if you left them guessing.

“Yeah, it’s fine I just- well I...” Taking a short breath, she continues, “It’s sorta like, my blood is on fire? Or rather, is fire-”

She places a hand on her temple, and exhales.

“Does that- make sense at all? I’m not hip to all the science of it myself, yet.”

Gratefully accepting the pencil, she stumbled a bit over her words.

“Right, um, thank you for the- it’s Brynn.”

The teen visibly cringed, so much for that try. Her voice always seemed to come out in a way that gave the impression of perpetual, vague nervousness. Sheepishly, she attempts to wipe the charred remains of the previous pencil away before the other notices. Hopefully she’ll return this to her in one piece.

“I-I haven’t been around for very long.”

“You will be able to. In time, with the proper adjustments, your mutation will be an asset more than a burden. I assure you.”

Still keeping her hand on the girl’s head, Danger kept track of her temperature via her internal heat sensors. According to her records, the girl’s heat index was far higher than it should be. It was a good thing Danger had her, and those like her who had self endangering mutations, wear bracelets that kept track of their vitals. Otherwise the girl may have had to go to the infirmary.

“I understand your frustration. You know you are capable of more, and you wish to excel at the pace of your peers. But that will not work for you. You must take the path that best suits you, that will most efficiently help you grow. Attempting to imitate others will only lead to pain and stagnation.”

Brynn gave a heavy sigh, it was a lecture she had received many times, from many different sources. She knew it was true, but that didn’t stop her from feeling a bit of shame or disappointment whenever she fell behind. Resigned, she gave a morose look into the water bottle before relenting.

“Got it…,” the girl mumbled, “No point in burning myself out trying to keep up constantly.”

Taking another drink of water, she simply enjoyed the soothing effect of her instructor’s lower temperature trying to ignore the steady burning. Cooling down seemed like the perfect idea right now, despite her wish to continue. When the sensations of pain didn’t subside to their more normal level, Brynn inwardly groaned. She was likely to have a long afternoon of trying to cool off her system in one of the colder rooms after working herself up this much. At least the pain wasn’t as bad as it could have been had the student continued without Danger’s intervention.

“Does this mean I have to check in at the infirmary? Because honestly, curling up somewhere with an ice pack seems a lot better to me, no matter what my vitals say…”

Thankfully her healing would take care of the actual damage to her body the heat might do, the only thing she actually had to account for was keeping herself hydrated, not counting the pain. Going to the medical wing always just ended up with her writhing uncomfortably until she cooled off anyways.

The young teen sighs in relief at the cooling touch, a welcome reprieve to her constant high temperature. Taking the water bottle, she utters a small ‘thank you’ before taking a few grateful swigs.

“I just- I just wish I could keep up with the others without having to,” she breaks off, taking another sip before continuing quietly, “take so many breathers...”

Brynn had been attempting to build up more endurance with help, but it seemed that it was more the dehydration and less the pain that kept her from accomplishing her goals. Even on a cool day she would need to take a knee from time to time, not to mention how much water she went through. She knew not to push her limits too far though, lest someone end up with painful burns.

“You are in danger to overheating. Do not push yourself.” Danger held  up a hand, placing it on the young woman’s forehead. It grew steadily colder, helping bring the other’s heat index down somewhat. A bottle of water was also given to the young student.

“It is important to acknowledge the limitations of your mutation, and also to learn how to bypass them. You are doing well, but you will be no good to anyone dead of self inflicted death via dehydration.”
