How crazy is that the only reason Sawyer develops is because he wants to be like Jack. He thinks he can be like him or even better like in Season 5. He goes after every woman who has interested in Jack. He hates that man but he also loves him. Because he is about the closest thing he got to a friend.

Jack is the one who makes him feel the most intense emotions.
Even when Juliet dies he looks back at him with that murderous look. And still Jack is the one who absolves Sawyer of the very sin he accused Jack of after what happens to Jin and Sun. And it’s Jack who safes him in the submarine.

It’s always been Jack. No matter how far the story goes. Jack is a constant in Sawyer’s life. In the flash-sideways Sawyer starts to wake up thanks to Jack who he keeps looking at but Jack doesn’t turns back. He is always ahead. Always out of reach.
Well until inside the church, finally he caught up with him.
