LP2 by Secret Band is a work of art <3
hi hi!! it’s been a few days since i’ve done an album review, and finals are here, so im gonna review an album that i’ve been a fan of for a while now!
secret band has the same lineup as dgd (except for a different bassist, another guitarist, and only jon doing vocals), and i love their music so much because it’s a lot heavier.
lp2 is their second album, and their fourth release. besides this project, they have a self titled ep and a self titled album, as well as 2 singles from off of lp2.
okay okay!!! first track: “upgrades”. this was their top streamed song whenever i first listened to the album, and it’s definitely one of my favourites. honestly it’s really impressive that there isn’t one specific part/instrument that stands out above the rest because they’re all really good. yeah. good song :)
i ain’t no fool, i put the nuggets in the oven and they taste so good “bloomer” is amazing. i love the guitar and the drums in the beginning. the bass in this song is one of the best. i have no clue what else to say.
“lightning”!! the lyrics to this song are probably the best. “complain how it isn’t fair that i can’t own a thousand tiny little bears”. the bridge is absolutely phenomenal. the guitar is so pretty, and i love the emotion in the vocals.
BRO
“RABBIT HOLE” HAS CLEANS. JON MESS DOING CLEANS. absolutely beautiful. i listen to this song just for the “i wanna get paid”. that’s it. and the EMOTION. i don’t know how they manage to put so much emotion into this album but?? it’s there. and i love it.
“black dolphin” just sounds like pure jibberish, but it’s very nice. also the fact that it’s one of the most brutal breakdowns in this whole album, and jon’s just like “little baby bunnyyyy little baby crow”. thank you mr. mess. i needed that.
i hate to admit this. but i have cried to “do it again” before. i wish i was joking. it was a sad song to me, and idk why. anyway! it’s very good. this was my favourite song the first time i listened to lp2. it’s still one of my favourites (it changes pretty often; right now it’s either “rabbit hole” or “moon”), and i love all the songs for different reasons. this one isn’t sad to me anymore, it’s just more mellow. if i’m looking for getting my eardrums shattered, i’d just play “moon”.
“meat bag”! the breakdown is amazing in this song. the drums are also really impressive. the guitars transition from staccato to legato in the beginning is so pretty. yeah. thoughts.
“no one i know”!! at this point i’m just going to be repeating the same thing about every song. amazing guitar, beautiful vocals, good song. yes.
“get you some” has the same thoughts
okay but “MOON”
oh my god moon is so good. the breakdown at the end is *chefs kiss* beautiful. it sounds like it’s going to calm down a bit, but then it just gets heavier. it’s fkn brutal, and i love it. the vocals are also really good. they’re in a lower range (especially at the end) and i love jon’s lower vocals.
thanks for sticking around!! apologies that i haven’t posted in a millennia. good bye !!

Dgd albums >:D
hi hii :)
i’m going to review all of the dgd albums here so that you don’t have to suffer through each individual album because there are a lot.
early demos:
this isn’t on any streaming platforms sadly, but there’s a video on youtube that has their early demos for wisro, including one song that didn’t get onto the ep. they changed the titles of the songs as well, but i really like how their sound changed from these demos to the actual release.
whatever i say is royal ocean:
this is kind of a controversial take, but i personally love wisro. the cover photo is of a painting that jon made, and i think it’s the only time that his art has made it onto a dgd project. LP2 by secret band and self titled by secret band both have his art. this was the first of their projects that i listened to, and i loved seeing how they progressed through the years.
favourite tracks: robot with human hair, pt. 1 and 2, tidal waves, the importance of cocaine.
overall rating: 10/10 >:3
downtown battle mountain:
first album!!! very swag. this is probably my favourite project with jonny craig. personally i like jon’s older vocals, and this album has some of the best vocals for both of them. one of the first songs that i listened to, lemon meringue tie, is on this album as well. it’s also one of the only songs that has drums at the very beginning. with this album, i either love the songs, or don’t really care for them much.
favourite tracks: and i told them i invented times new roman, lemon meringue tie, it’s safe to say you dig the backseat, the backwards pumpkin song, 12 hours 360 miles.
overall rating: 8/10
dance gavin dance:
also called death star or self titled
this album is my favourite. this is the first one with kurt, and this is when the lineup changes start happening. uneasy hearts is my all time favourite of theirs, and every song on this record is amazing. kurt has a very similar vocal style to tilian, and his solo music and gold necklace album are phenomenal as well.
favourite tracks: uneasy hearts weigh the most, alex english, me and zoloft get along just fine, caviar, rock solid, skyhook.
overall rating: 100/10
happiness:
the lineup for this album is complicated. kurt is still the clean vocalist, but jon left for a few years due to lyme disease, college, and his best friend leaving the band as well. any of the unclean vocals are done by guitarist will swan. i didn’t like this album much till recently, but it’s started to grow on me more.
favourite tracks: tree village, nasa, carl barker, happiness, don’t tell dave.
overall rating: 7.5/10
downtown battle mountain ii:
“dance gavin dance babyyyy downtown battle mountain twoooooo”
anyway. here we have: the return of jonny craig!! :,) but more importantly, jon mess is back!!!! this album is okay. same with dbm one, i either really like the songs or don’t. this is the first album that has will rapping (i might be wrong? i can’t remember).
favourite tracks: spooks, pounce bounce, thug city, elder goose, heat seeking ghost of sex
overall rating: 7/10
acceptance speech:
tilian!!!!! finally jonny craig is gone for good lmao. this album is PHENOMENAL. i love it. the instrumentals are probably my favourite part, but the vocals are incredible too. some of the runs that tilian does (especially in doom and gloom) are just pure perfection. this is whenever the albums really start to get their own individual sounds. i love this one sm.
favourite tracks: jesus h. macy, doom & gloom, demo team, death of the robot with human hair, the jiggler.
instant gratification:
this one was also an album that i didn’t enjoy until recently. stream wise, it’s their most popular album. “we own the night” is their most popular song, and it’s on this album. now that i’ve listened to it through a few times, i really like it. there are quite a few parts where the guitar really stands out.
favourite songs: something new, on the run, shark dad, awkward, eagles vs. crows, variation.
overall rating: 9/10
mothership
if i remember correctly (and i might not be), this was the first tilian-era album i heard. i genuinely loved every song on this album, but whenever i heard flossie dickie bounce i was,, confused. i looked up the lyrics immediately to check if i was hearing wrong. no, the chorus is actually “cocaine cringe fest” like 3 times. i hated that song at first, because i was like “dude wtf.” but now i love it. absolutely phenomenal. that song is actually a really good example of how a lot of dgd songs won’t be good for the first few listens, but it clicks after a bit. the podcast that i was listening to today actually talked about that. so yeah!! flossie dickie bounce is,, a song for sure.
favourite songs: young robot, deception, philosopher king, petting zoo justice
overall rating: 10/10
artificial selection:
this album is whenever the lore really gets started. but that’s a post for another day lmao :,) this album has lots of very fancy riffs and it sounds super Swag :) honestly i’m still waiting for some of the songs on this album to click with me. i don’t have many things to say :,) good album. lore swag. yeah :)
favourite songs: son of robot, count bassy, suspended in this disaster, story of my bros, hair song.
overall rating: 8/10
afterburner:
100/10. beautiful. all of the blends of genres. the only critique i have is that tilians accent is so american in calentamiento global, but it’s okay. he’s doing his best :,) also the fact that there’s rap, experimental vocals with jon and tilian, and a bilmuri feature just,,, YES.
favourite songs: prisoner, parody catharsis, born to fail, parallels, night sway, say hi, nothing shameful, into the sunset.
OKAY!!!! i did it. thanks for sticking with me!!!! pls don’t cyber bully me these are just my opinions okay bye!!

A Tear in the Fabric of Life by Knocked Loose review because who needs math homework anyway
okay okay okay OKAY!!!! I just remembered this album exists (well it’s an ep but whatever) and !!!!! it’s very good so now you must suffer through my thoughts.
just an overall content warning on the album itself: the story itself is about ptsd, and it does touch on some topics that could be triggering. this review won’t go into many details, but if that is something that you wouldn’t be comfortable with, i wouldn’t recommend listening to the album.
alrighty gamers!! we start with the song “where light divides the holler”, and the main things that stick out to me is the fact that it is 1. absolutely brutal /pos, 2. it goes into the next song???? they blend perfectly?????????? 3. it has a lot of references to their other music!! there are references to this project, a different shade of blue, laugh tracks, and i believe there is also a reference to their early project pop culture? i can’t remember :,) the vocals are very very good. there’s vocals from the lead vocalist and the guitarist (who’s done lows since like,,, their second project i believe? idk), so that’s neat.
okay moving along. next we have “god knows”, and the scream in the beginning is just *chefs kiss*. emotional music time. stream wise, this is the most popular song on the album, and it’s probably one of my favourites. it’s a very close tie with “return to passion” and “contorted in the faille”, but all of the songs are good for their own reasons. there’s a new vocal technique in this song? that’s kinda cool. idk. what are thoughts.
alrighty this is kind of a trainwreck. anyway! next song is called “forced to stay”. in my opinion, this song has the most to do with the storyline of the project itself. with this ep, the vocalist wanted to do something completely different and out of the band’s comfort zone. this project is actually a fictional story of a character coping with their survivor’s guilt after their partner died in a car crash that they survived. as the project goes along, it’s really interesting to me to see how the character starts to lose their grip on reality as they struggle with the guilt and anger. the vocalist explain in an interview that his emotions ended up being brought into this ep a lot, kind of as a form of therapy. especially in a different shade of blue, you can see how the members of the band are using their music as an outlet to cope with their feelings, which i think is great because it can help their listeners, as well. so yeah! the animated film explains the story in greater detail (and sadly i haven’t seen the whole thing because i have a terrible attention span), but i would definitely put a trigger warning on that, as well as a flash warning because it is very flashy.
“contorted in the faille”! i always struggle to pronounce this one because i am,, yeah. big brain. this one also has one of those transitions from “forced to stay”, and i love listening to it because !!!!! it’s very cool. i love this project sm. this song takes the story to a whole new level. this song is mostly about the protagonist missing the character who died, but it touches a lot on their decent into delusions and detachment from reality. honestly the more that i read the lyrics and look into the project, the darker it becomes. so uh! yeah!! i find it very interesting.
next song!! this one is called “return to passion”, and i love it so much. there’s another reference to a past song, in the lyric “guided by the moon until the grave” which is a reference to “guided by the moon” (wow how cool) from a different shade of blue. the guitar is kinda jazzy in the transition from the first verse to the chorus? that’s very swag. also there’s a part where the guitar goes from one ear to another and i love it. at the end there’s like an asmr thing? i don’t like asmr so that kinda ruined everything for me. :D
final song (wow this has taken so long) !! “permanent”, which is the longest on the ep at 4 minutes and 42 seconds. the majority of the song is instrumental, and it feels a lot shorter than it is. this is probably the only song in the ep that has a slower breakdown, which is interesting because this band is known for their slow breakdowns. yeah!!! so this song kind of wraps up the story, and bam! album done. i wish it was longer. but it’s okay.
i am extremely tired!! thank you for sticking with me through this insanity!! now i’m actually going to do math homework.
