Another blast from the past.

Of course I had to include Ink in my line up of nostalgia. Ink and Error where two of the first few AUs I dove into, way back when. I hadn't thought about Ink in so long, turns out he got a redesign 5 years ago! Of course I drew Ink in their new design, as per Comyet's wishes.

I've been reading up on tons of other AUs on my nostalgia journey. It's crazy that some of the original creators are still tending to their Undertale-adjacent creations. While some artists/creators have gone onto bigger and better things; some still tinker with their AU concepts and characters.

I think my next fanart will be a duo combo...

If you wanna hear my waffle on about some context behind this, fly over the undercut and peel your eyes open.

Although I have only one other Undertale related artwork on most of my socials (for now), I really LOVE the game. My first exposure to a fandom, might I add. They were the best of times… and the worst of times… I have so much art from around then. The only way I'd ever show those off is when I get 1 million YouTube subs and want to forcefully retire myself from the internet as a whole lol.

The fandom was a rabbit hole for me, leading me to discover the pop culture and media concept of Alternate Universe/s (AUs). Wildly popular with people wanting to rewrite stories or games to how they saw fit (and fan fiction, of course). My mind was blown at the thought of changing something 'already set in stone'. I quickly learnt the difference between canon, headcanons and fanon lol.

Artistically, I reflect on that time in my life as a renaissance of my artwork. I have surpassed myself in skill (thank God), but I haven't been able to capture that spark I once had. There was something that, for the lack of better words, hit different back then.

Something ungodly possessed me to go back and browse through all of those AUs again (some were… definitely worse than I remembered…). Error was the first to come to mind. I never really looked into the context behind the story; I mainly just thought he looked cool lol. Present day; I plan on reading through the Ask Error blog. I vaguely remember some panels from those comics.

I 60-70% remember the art I made around 2016 - 2018. A lot of the original files for those fanarts got wiped or misplaced. I believe I have all of them as copies, scattered throughout various storage, iPads and personal Discord channels. It's really charming (and cringeworthy) to go back through and look at them all.

I was absolutely inspired. Playing around with something new to me really seemed to push me forward. I've felt stagnant in the last few years. I don't think I'll ever make more fanart of a game or show more than I did of Undertale and the fandom's AUs. And y'all have seen how much Hawks fanart I make!- That doesn't even come close to the stash I'm sitting on over here.

It's both comforting and nostalgic to come back to old interests of mine. Not that I ever really stopped being interested in this stuff. This part of my life will forever have a profound affect on me. It's reassuring to see that the Undertale fandom is still thriving; specifically the part that feels creative enough to still come up with their own AUs. I think it's a good thing for growing artists to actually enjoy interacting with their favourite media through the best way they know how.
