So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.

If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results: 

What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)

What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)

Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory) 

What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.) 

Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)

Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)

Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.) 

What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

Hey everyone! Sorry it’s been a while, I’ve been pretty darn busy! I’d like y’all to meet my team going into the gym!

[Included is a photo of Sera, with a Leavanny with spiky leaves, a Dunsparce with some dirt on its face, and a sleepy-looking Whirlipede.]

Turns out sewaddle and swadloon evolve a lot faster when you battle with them! You all know Sugarbee, but here she is in her final form! I met Tuber at the Floccessy Ranch, thankfully the ranchers didn’t mind me scrounging around in the grass haha. We found Derby while training and he seemed to want to tag along, so I caught him. He may look laid-back but in battle he’s a real menace!

We may have prepared a bit too much for our first gym, but oh well! I’ll tell you all how it goes!

//I’m using photo descriptions for now, since college is starting up again so there’s not much time for drawing with the tablet, hope you all don’t mind too much

Well, all the preparations are made. My mom’s back from Alola, she’s gonna look after the house and the pokemon I’m not taking with me. I’m leaving Sunburst, Yo-yo, and Little Gourmand with her for now, but I’ll pick them back up once my new team is strong enough. I want the authentic experience, so Sugarbee will be my starter. I don’t even know what to say here, my mind is racing, I’m so excited! I’m nervous too, but I think I’m ready.

The plan is to take a boat to Virbank, and catch a few pokemon around there, then head to the normal type gym for my first badge.

It works. This is life-changing. I can finally fly on a pokemon without fearing for my life! Well, not that any of my current pokemon could carry me anyhow, but still! Especially with my very own pokemon journey ahead of me, the possibility of flying is very good!

But the magnet bomb messed up my phone’s internal stuff… So, I write this on my new phone! And it’s a Rotom Phone! A real one, not one of the porygon ones. I’d like you all to meet Circuit-Breaker, the lovely little rotom living in it!

I have learned so many things about caterpie today. So I’ve been watching this little guy for a few hours, and comparing its behavior to what I know about sewaddle. Not too many differences, but caterpie spends way more time eating, and doesn’t seem to care about blending in. Since I caught Yo-yo as a metapod, this has been very insightful into what she might’ve been like before we met!
