tbh i find this fandom’s insistence on interpreting all real-world arguments about batman as personal attacks on bruce wayne, the character, as opposed to critique of batman as a media property exhausting. and to be fair, it’s not like people on the other side don’t conflate the two but … i think it is invariably less interesting to see a comment like “batman is always beating up mentally ill people” and read it as “bruce wayne should just give the joker a stern talking to about all the murders he does,” rather than “the way that batman’s antagonists are commonly portrayed as driven by symptoms of mental illness to violent crime, up to and including mass murder, reinforces dangerous misconceptions about a vulnerable population.” like, how often do the comics depict people with psychosis, DID, compulsive behaviors, etc. who aren’t a danger to others, as opposed to people with those symptoms who are theme villains? you can’t tell me that has no political implications.

you also can’t tell me it has no political implications that street crime in gotham more closely resembles right-wing talk radio’s deranged ideas of what chicago is like than it does any actual us city, or that billionaire bruce wayne donates large portions of his extensive fortune to charity seemingly without effecting any kind of meaningful change. like, come on.

in light of recent developments (the epiphany that i apparently only read the same fanfics over and over again and never branch out) i'm hereby taking action to cure my fic deficiency!

im obsessed w bruce’s grief over jason but not in DC’s brainrot weaponizing it as a way to guilt-trip. it’s about love, babey! there is no purpose to this grief other than it being about love! how love doesn’t change anything, doesn’t fix anything, doesn’t excuse actions & choices made but it still exists, never stops. tragedy can’t kill love and love can’t save tragedy

Now I will argue that Batman’s motivations (protecting the innocent), level of preparedness, and the fact that he doesn’t kill people, put him miles above the current uniformed fascists charged with maintaining the status quo and protecting property. That being said I think this would be an innovative take on the Batman mythos, and have social commentary guaranteed to piss the wrong people (by which I mean the right people) right off.  Personally I’d watch the shit out of that. 😉
