“Born this way” is a really bad argument.

LGBTQIAP+ people, we really sell ourselves short when we use this as our reasoning for why we should be accepted. We should be safe and accepted because we’re goddamn human beings. It shouldn’t matter whether we were born one way or another.

Maybe we are born that way. Maybe we aren’t. Maybe some of us are born that way and some aren’t. Either way it doesn’t really matter. It’s irrelevant to any explanation of why we deserve basic human rights. The religious extremists who are the biggest source of homophobia in our lives don’t give a fuck about how we got to be LGBTQIAP+ because they’ve hated plenty of other marginalized groups for traits they were born with.

Instead of catering to an ideology of “take pity on them, they can’t help it,” and trying to drown out the ideas of LGBTQIAP+ people who do not maintain that they were born that way, our message should be that we should respect each other’s differences and not harm each other, regardless of the circumstances surrounding our identities. And no one who only supports us if they believe we truly can’t help it and would become straight and/or cis if we could has only fake and conditional support for us anyway.

Summary:

Jake is very concerned by Ziyal’s sudden interest in him. Though, it’s hardly what he suspects. And, after some initial awkwardness, they become fast friends – joking around and laughing at each other, or well, mostly just laughing at Jake and his pants.

There’s also a splash of cute background Jake/Nog with a lot of Nog nagging Jake for the whole pants fiasco.

Spoiler: Jake is never going to live this down for the rest of his life.

I recently did this as part of the Star Trek Friendship Fest! It’s very very silly and I had a lot of fun writing something kind of out of my comfort zone. :3
