Pebbling

It had been a few weeks of Cole and Xen officially dating, and despite the way the relationship started, the actual thing was so...quiet. At least, for lack of a better word.

Cole was sweet! He was attentive and extremely clingy. But he rarely ever initiated affection.

Like a strange vampire, it was as if engaging in anything more than a slight brush of the hands would make him burst into flames. But the moment he was like...well, a panther.

Not too long into the relationship, Xen had noticed Cole lighting up (or at least as much as he could light up) whenever they'd give him tiny gifts. A ripped off piece of paper with a little heart and smiley face, a smooth rock, or even paper stars.

So that became the default way to express affection.

Xen would scatter little notes around or come home with shells or pebbles they found on their walk. And after a short while, Cole also joined in.

He started with smaller things like a button or a can tabs. Then they slowly evolved into more unique things, like shards of colorful glass or small bird skulls. Though, after the glass had cut his palm, Xen told him to be more careful with the gifts he gives.

Then, one fateful day, curiosity killed the cat.

"Hey Cole," Xen slid up beside him as he was preparing breakfast. "When did you start, uh...pebbling? Is it some panther DNA thing?"

Cole did a small double-take to look at them. "...What do you mean? You're the one who started it."

"I-- Uh, I did?"

"Yes, you did." With his free hand, Cole squished Xen's face and gently shook it as if that would help them think. "And...I simply followed along because I assumed that'd what you would have prefered."

"Oh." Xen pried out of his grip. "That's cool, but I'd prefer anything you do, honestly."

The two stood in silence for a bit.

"...Really?"

"Really, truly, 100%."

"I could even, let's say, kiss you right now?"

"Whenever your heart desires, even."

I NEEDED TO WRITE A XALE FIC BECAUSE I DIDNT HAVE ONE FOR THE LONGEST TIME high school au because it’s vaguely based on teenage dirtbag. take these two losers (word count: 467)

Scale sat in his desk, a few minutes before class was meant to start. He always tended to be the first one in class, anyway. Not like he had anywhere else to be.

And like every other day, the second person to enter was Xen followed by their group of friends.

Like clockwork, they would arrive early, bid their friends farewell at the entrance, before awkwardly avoiding eye contact with Scale. Which wasn't the easiest thing to do. Since they sat right next to each other.

Honestly, Xen's presence just pissed him off. They had their perfect little friends, and their perfect grades, and their stupidly, perfect looks—

They were SO annoying.

Class finally started which meant he could pay attention to something other than how Xen kept giving him awkward glances. He could see them look away every time he caught them, too! They were terrible at being subtle.

That was until Scale was broken out of his thoughts by the teacher pointing at the both of them.

“Scale and Xen, you’ll be working together.”

Simultaneously, the aforementioned students responded, “What??”

The teacher was already moving to pair up the other students, turning back at the two’s shock. “For the project? After the last one, I’m not letting anyone pick their partners…”

Scale thought back to the last class project where everyone either paired with their best friend and made a crude presentation or…well, both he and Xen had rejected having a partner, working on their own.

“Besides”, the teacher continued, “you two will work great together.”

Xen was already protesting. “Ma’am, you can’t— I mean, is this really necessary?” But their words fell of deaf ears as the teacher simply gave them a grin before moving on.

Scale huffed as they dejectedly slid down into their seat. “You really wanted everyone to know how much you don’t like me, didn’t you? Do you think you’re better than me?”

“Wha-?” Xen’s head whipped around to face him; it was the first time they had been face-to-face. “‘Don’t like you’? Where did you…? Why do you think I think that?”

“You literally begged to not be my partner!”

“Not because I hate you, though!”

“Then what could possibly be the reason?!”

Xen struggled to find the words to respond as their mouth opened and closed like a fish gasping for air. They were avoiding eye contact with him again. They always did that.

But something was off. They had completely shifted their body to face forward, away from Scale. Their hands were covering their face as their leg bounced anxiously.

Wait, “anxiously”?

That’s when he noticed a distinct, rosy dusting along Xen’s cheeks and ears.

Oh. It couldn’t possibly—? Dammit. At this rate, the two must’ve looked like two peas in a pod.

They were SO annoying.

dc xennie "Jester" design :3 they dont have a bat insignia on their costume but dramatic ass bat cape works too lol. pastel pink for their usual look but ragdoll brown version for more nighttime missions

and yeah they do silly magic tricks with colorful cloth. though it's also their way of strangling criminals to pass out. listen theyre not the strongest so they need to find creative ways to keep up with the rest of the bats
