Nephelomancy | Cloud Divination
Read this if you want to know why there are little to no correspondences in this guide
-------
Nephelomancy has been used for centuries by various cultures to divine the future. You can make your divining very complicated, using a lot different factors, or make it very simple, focusing on two or three factors. Depending on what kind of reading you are doing, the way you read the clouds can vary greatly.
Even how you go about doing it can vary greatly. Of course, having something to write with/on or speak into (if you rather voice record the session) is extremely helpful. I find that nephelomancy is something that can really be customized to the individual.
Tips and Tricks
Use your intuition and experiences
What do you associate with storm clouds?
Don’t second guess your initial thoughts
If your impressions change, why are they changing?
Clouds changing too fast, take a picture or video
Some ways to go about it
Taking a picture or short video with your phone/camera
Observing the clouds out of your window
Finding an open space outside to observe the clouds
Using a timer, to observe the sky for a set amount of time
Observing the clouds until you feel you have an answer
Things to take into account
Time of Day
Colour
Shape
Fullness
Direction of Movement
Types of Clouds
Where they sit in the atmosphere
Things to ask yourself
What kind of clouds am I seeing?
What direction are the clouds moving, if at all?
Do I see a silver lining?
How wispy are the clouds?
How fast are the shapes changing?
How are the shapes interacting with each other?
Types of Clouds
Depending on the type of cloud, they can sit in different levels of the atmosphere, which can also factor into your divining.
Below are a few of the more common types of clouds, but if you really want to get into specifics, there are many different subtypes you can look into.
Low level clouds

Cumulus
“Fair-weather” clouds. Cumulus clouds often develop in the morning and are gone by evening. They are your standard cloud with little to no precipitation.

Stratus
The lowest lying cloud type. A layered, fairly uniform flat cloud which is mostly grey or white. These clouds are very fog-like. This type of cloud are associated with dreary, overcast days. Stratus clouds are usually accompanied by little to no rainfall but, if it is thick enough, can produce a light drizzle. If cold enough, these clouds can produce light snowfall.

Stratocumulus
These clouds form when there is weak convection in the atmosphere. Stratocumulus clouds are low, puff, greyish or whitish clouds that occur in patches. Though it looks like it will rain with these clouds, little to no rainfall accompanies these types of clouds.
Mid-level Clouds

Altocumulus
Altocumulus clouds often form on warm or humid mornings, and frequently signal the formation of thunderstorms. These clouds generally form as white or grey patches in large rounded masses or aligned in parallel bands.

Nimbostratus
These clouds form as a multi-level, dark grey, amorphous, nearly uniform cloud that usually produces continuous rain, snow, or sleet over a wide area. These clouds commonly form in the middle level of the atmosphere, but can grow into the lower and high levels.

Altostratus
These are grey or blue-grey clouds that cover the whole sky. They are not as thick as Nimbostratus clouds, so the sun or moon--although fuzzy--can be seen through them. These clouds are accompanied by little to no precipitation, but can form into nimbostratus clouds. Altostratus clouds are often formed out of ice crystals.
High level Clouds

Cirrocumulus
These are rare, short-lived clouds that are predominately made out of ice crystals. These clouds are small, white patches in the sky often arranged in rows. These clouds can quickly turn into cirrostratus clouds, if all of the remaining supercooled water in the cloud freezes. If these clouds are seen after rain, the weather will improve.

Cirrostratus
These clouds are made out of ice crystals. They indicated that large amounts of moisture are present in the atmosphere. These clouds are transparent, whitish clouds that veil the entire sky, often forming a halo around the sun or moon. If these clouds are “unbroken” a warm front is approaching and with it rain or snow. If it is broken up, a light rain or snow might follow.

Cirrus
These clouds occur in fair weather, but form ahead of frontal systems and tropical cyclones. These clouds indicate a deterioration of the current weather conditions. These clouds are made completely out of ice crystals and are characterized by thin, wispy strands.
All level Cloud

Cumulonimbus
These clouds span all layers. They are massive, dense clouds with a flat, anvil-like top. These clouds produce thunder and lightning and can produce other severe weather, such as tornado and hail. These are your standard thunderstorm clouds.

Past-Life reading for @burnedbard
Blessed Yuletide!
I see a field. It smells, no, reeks of petrichor. It must have just finished raining, because the ground still feels wet. It’s a lovely feeling, how the cold water touches your toes. You’ve been in the shade for so long now, doodling in this leather journal. You have places to be, and you know, but you can’t help it as you sit there, enjoying your day.
Life hasn’t been easy for you. It’s taken so long to get into that university, and plus, you’re a girl in this time period. They shun and despise you, turn you away from anything that has deep thought. They don’t know any better, and if they do, they want to control.
But your father is a good one in this life, and he petitions for you.
You want to learn like the greats, to be an aficionado of music and art, because to you, they are so intimately connected. You would go with your father to the symphonies, and you’d nearly cry in awe at the beauty of the music and the rhythms.
And now, you know that nature has its own melody, too.
The chirps from the birds sound like bells. The wind, an organ.
Despite this lovely music, you can’t sit still all day. And so, you pull on and lace your shoes, and you head out in the direction of the university.

Organic Practice
I have become a huge proponent of organic practice. By organic, I don’t mean produce or vegetables. What I mean is practicing with intuition, spontaneity, and purpose.
When I was in the early years of my practice, I spent a lot of time working from books. Growing up and living in a small place meant that resources were limited, and my only exposure, aside from my like-minded practicing friends, was books. I spent time following every spell by ingredient, every sabbath to the day, every tenant as though it was dogma.
As I have grown as a witch, I have found that those things I held so concrete in the beginning seem far less important than the doing and the feeling behind the doing. I use my intuition frequently in my workings, perhaps being inspired by a spell I have read but mainly choosing ingredients that really speak to me. When I am celebrating a sabbath or other holy day, I am doing so with my own interpretations and with the world around me.
I still love books, and I read frequently. I love reading author’s takes on different workings or their views about ethics. I like their interpretations and their anecdotes.
It’s kind of like baking a cake from the same recipe for years - eventually you learn what works and what doesn’t. You know it by heart and can embellish as needed. That’s kind of how magic works.
By tuning into your own intuition, combined with your own research and study, you are an effective and powerful witch.

A note for any guides and info I post
I do a lot of my work through intuition and what feels right to me. Everyone is different in their path and how they use what they use. I find that correspondence lists and other resources that are out there have their uses, but they are not true for everyone.
For example, pretty much all of the resource I have come across say clockwise invokes and counterclockwise banishes. For me, it is the other way around. Counterclockwise is for me more natural than clockwise for invoking things.
Any sort of guide or information that I may post is based on research and my own intuition. If there is any information therein that does not speak to you, ask yourself why? Don’t limit yourself to what the guide or information says. Expand upon it. Use your intuition and use what feels right to you.

Getting Set Up and About the Blog
So I am still setting things up. Theme and color scheme, as well as icon, are placeholders for the moment. At least you have something to look at for now.
This will be a predominately witchy blog. I am not new to the witchblr community, but my old blog was so cluttered and full of just random stuff, that I decided to start from scratch.
My goal is to make more original content, instead of just reblogging anything and everything. I have a post on cloud divination coming up, so look forward to that. I want to aim for one original post every two weeks or so. I want to see if I can actually get my ass in gear to get this done. What the posts are about will vary, but we’ll see.
About page is also in the works, so look out for that.
Let’s get a long and enjoy ourselves.

Witchy Wishlists 2019, Year Seven!
It’s December 1st, which means that Witchy Wishlists is here once again!
If this is your first time hearing about Witchy Wishlists, welcome, and please feel free to participate! The idea is very simple: make a wishlist and post it to the #Witchy Wishlists tag here on tumblr. (And while you’re at it, you should probably tag it #witchy wishlist as well, since we inevitably get people misfiring there as well)
Then, when you’re done, check the tag and see what wishes you can grant! We only have a few simple rules:
Your wishlist can have up to 13 requests on it!
However, you can link to external wishlists using your slots!
You’re not allowed to replace items on your post with new ones once you get them. 13 is a big number, and allowing the external wishlists gives you lots of freedom.
Only post your wishlist to the tag once! You can reblog it as many times as you like after that though :D (You’re allowed to make a new post every year, however!)
If you’re asking for physical items to be sent to you, please include your country in either the title or body of your post!
You may also want to include a contact section or leave your ask/tumblr IMs open so that people can reach you!
Witchy Wishlists runs from December 1st 2019 to January 13th 2020! Once the event is over, wait until December 1st, 2020 to post your wishlists again!
I made a post here about the spirit of this event, and I’d ask that you read it so that you have a better understanding of what we’re trying to do here.
If you’re not sure about something, ask if what you’re doing is going against that spirit, and if it is…don’t do it. If you’re not sure, please ask me!
Remember: Witchy Wishlists is NOT an exchange. If you want to give in return to people who gift to you, check their wishlist if you’d like, but please don’t “advertise” anything you may want to offer in return – that’s the kind of thing that goes against the spirit of the event, and also makes people feel guilty for asking when they can’t offer what others may.
In addition, please remember that you don’t need money to participate in Witchy Wishlists. Many people ask for things that cost no money, or may be things you could easily or cheaply grant.
You also do not have to ask for witchy things or necessarily be a witch yourself. I use “witchy” to be somewhat vague and it’s up to you how you identify!
So please make a list, and look for some wishes to grant!
