one of my favourite hcs about shauna is that she went through some kind of gender exploration in the wilderness.

her “be or be with” relationship with jackie and how it reflects jackie as the “perfect girl” while she only seems to fall short is so layered and painful for shauna, and yet she doesn’t really find it in herself to shy away from it.

her outfit choices through season 3 i also found really interesting, seemingly falling very in line with travis although it also nods toward the gender confusion that lots of queer people face trying to accept themselves and their role in such a heteronormative society, especially in the 90s.

her dynamic with tai feels influenced by this also. even when their group is an openly supportive place, shauna still seems to reserve her identity from them a lot. this is obviously for a load of other reasons, but i find the idea that she has resentment towards being seen as a girl that she can’t quite place or accept fits in. as tai and van’s relationship grows stronger and tai is more open about her identity, shauna seems to shy away from her more. not out of hatred, but in a “why do you know how to be you and i don’t know how to be me?” way, especially with how we know shauna refuses people’s help or input.

being the “antler queen” is an interesting one too. the costume and title itself is interesting overall, with them holding the title of “queen” and yet performing as a leader in a way that we usually only see men do. when she’s dressed in that way, shauna becomes powerful. she is no longer being seen in her own skin. the concept itself is androgynous - although the “queen”, that title is only given because majority of the group are female. it no longer holds weight when you put it back into the context of the normal world, because if any person was introduced to a completely hidden, disguised figure as a “dictator”, the assumption there will usually be that they’re a man.

with the way sexuality and gender identity politics interact in find it really insightful that shauna shut away her bisexuality as soon as they got home. it’s never mentioned, and if it is it’s as something foreign to her - “this stuff is for bisexuals and goths”. it was stigmatised, of course, but 3 other members of the group eventually lived and (2x) married other women and live publicly as lesbians. as a community, gender and sexuality overlap a lot. but politically, there’s obviously a massive gap in acceptance between queer and trans identities.

i wouldn’t say shauna is a transmasc - i think there’s plenty of evidence to connect her to her life as a woman positively and it appears like the questioning that plenty of young people go through, especially in such an isolated space and in such a traumatic time. but i do find it interesting, now that we know so much about her time in the wilderness, how much this detail clings to her because it occured in the same headspace as the traumatic experiences that live inside her always.
