Talking Books With @busybooklr!
Tumblr media
[What is this and how can I participate?]
Welcome again!
Back to the US (like 98% of the blogs I’ve interviewed are American! You are everywhere!) to discuss TBRs, knowing the plot beforehand, and book recs. Enjoy!
Important note: I haven’t changed or edited any of the answers. I’ve only formatted the book titles so they were clearer, but nothing else. Because I’m incapable of shutting up, my comments are between brackets and in italics, so you can distinguish them clearly.

[Image description: a square titled “Know the blogger”. Name & pronouns: Busy, she/her; country: United States; three adjectives to describe her: introverted, funny &, creative]
1. What is a TBR for you? A pile of books by your bed? A handwritten list of books you need to get? A folder on your laptop with unread ebooks?
My TBR is the list of titles I have on hold through my Overdrive library app and the pile of books in front of my bookshelf, that await judgement on whether or not they will be added to my shelves.
[”that await judgement” - that sounds both dire and oddly specific. Poor books, I’m sure they have nightmares!]
2. Last book you hated?
I wouldn’t say hated, but the last book that definitely wasn’t for me was The Onion Girl by Charles de Lint.
3. Do you read classics?
I do, but rarely. The Odyssey is on my TBR for this year; I’ve started it twice and then been distracted by other books.
[Cue me saying that I want to read it too because I love Greek mythology, but I’m a coward]
I’m reading the translation by Emily Wilson, and it really is lovely. I think a lot of the motivation to finish is not there because I already have a fairly good idea of what happens in the story. Usually, that driving need to know what happens next is the motivating factor behind my reading.
[Yeah, that happens to me too. But on the other hand, I think something really cool is seeing how an story you already know, or know of, gets told, which is why my love for retellings is so strong]
4. Who is an auto-read author for you?
I have a few auto-read authors: Tamora Pierce, Rainbow Rowell, Erin Morgenstern, and Leigh Bardugo.
5. Urban fantasy vs epic fantasy, both or neither?
Oh, definitely epic fantasy! I love the extensive world building in that genre.
Free space to say/add/recommend anything!
I’d like to recommend two new-to-me books I read this year: The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg and Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova.
Also, as I am now in my thirties, I am constantly on the hunt for books with protagonists 30+. I’d love recommendations.
And one last thing: read without guilt or obligation. Read because you find pleasure in it, no matter the subject.
[Definitely. Reading out of obligation is the worst and nobody enjoys it]
You can follow her at @busybooklr, on Goodreads and on StoryGraph.

Thank you, Busy! It was lovely chatting with you.
Next interview: Saturday, 26th of September

Shelf-Confidence BPC | August 25: Underrated or Overrated
There are not enough people raving over this wonderful fantasy duology, and I’d like to see that change.

Shelf-Confidence BPC | August 24: Notes in the Margin or Clean Pages
This copy of The Lightning Thief was part of a traveling book project, and I absolutely adore it. I would like more annotated books, but it feels silly to annotate my own copy just for me. If anyone has a line on a traveling book project, though, hmu.

Shelf-Confidence BPC | August 23: Alphabetical or By Color
Once upon a time, I kept all my shelves strictly alphabetize by author and then chronology. Now, I group them in whatever way pleases me by color and subject matter.

One real benefit of reading I rarely hear anybody mention is how much more interesting life becomes when you read a lot. It depends what you’re reading, of course, but most (good) books will teach you something you didn’t already know, and even if you have to give the book back to the library, you get to take that much with you. A lot of people talk about things they wish they’d studied in school–I’ve done it, too–but it’s a nice consolation prize that you can always pick up a book and learn something new. And as that library in your brain collects more volumes, everything around you gains new resonances, new context, and new connections which make your lived experience richer. In quarantine alone I’ve read about religion and politics and history and evolution and computer science and astrophysics without even leaving my house and it’s already a more interesting world.

Happy #stacksaturday ! What are you doing today? . It is storming here so thinking it’ll be a lazy day. Are you a #grishaverse fan? I obviously am! I need to photograph my entire Grisha collection again soon. I love the fancy foiled editions they are making more and more these days. Fairyloot announced yesterday they are doing an exclusive Shadow and Bone. Head over to their post for details. . . . HASHTAGS

I have gotten lazy about reading physical books. I still buy them, but I am much more likely to read a book through my Overdrive app than I am to pick up a book I bought. It’s ridiculous to the point where sometimes I put a book I own on the hold list at the library for the sake of convenience.

Weekly Bookish Question #194 (August 16th - August 22nd):
We’re all here because we love reading, but:  What’s a thing you don’t like (or that annoys you) about reading (or your personal reading habit)?
