Need a place to live.

I just got my job in DC. I work for the US Government. I’ve been trying to find a place to live, and man, it’s been a crazy journey. I made a post in Craigslist. Everyone I spoke with told me to try it and I did. 

First interaction was an old lady. She as cool over the phone and sounded ok. I went to her place and she walked me through her house, but later she began to get more and more.. intense. It went from normal toned rules/dissuasions to her being very aggressive and demanding. She seemed to be very upset at the current condition of her house, due to her current tenants leaving it in disgusting conditions. They really abuse her and the house. After this, she wanted the money. She tried to get in my car and have me take her to the bank. She began banging inside the car and just going completely crazy. She eventually got out of the car, and I drove as far away as I could while she drove in another direction.

The next offered a really nice place. I met him on Zillow.com. The guy left his key in a real estate lock bock and gave me the code. He gave me the key to his property, and let me inside. I never met this guy face to face. The first opportunity, I was late. I was stuck in traffic and he said he had to go meet his son which I understood. The next opportunity, he told me if I liked it I should send him my bank account number, copy of my photo ID, social number, and a bunch of not so good things. He didn’t want a money order “it would take longer”.

My second encounter is with a co worker. Another co worker was occupying his property but left it in disgusting condition. He was doing me a favor by letting me move in ASAP. I paid him half a thousand, as that was the agreed method but I thought he’d clean it up a bit as he told me. It’s a good property for the price but also has it’s negatives. He has not cleaned the place since the last guy left, so I’m still in his dirty property. I only spent one night inside and it was disgusting. The carpet and floor is so dirty I just walk around in my bare shoes. I’d be insane to sacrifice my socks or risk skin contact. The vents, and surrounding wall is covered in mold. The shower is covered in mold. Gnats were in the fridge and bedroom. 

I’m a clean person, just need a place to stay near my job thats safe. I don’t smoke, no pets, no drugs, nothing. I have money but my problem is finding a sane landlord and clean property. I keep for myself and trying to establish my career. Hoping for a 1 bedroom unit around $1,000 or less.
