At long last, here's my full piece for @tohmirageandmischief zine!! I was always going to do a Steve piece and decided to do something from his coven days, around the time he starts to notice something is very wrong and doubt begins to grow in his mind about whether he's doing the right thing

Could go a lot of different ways with it, which is great cuz it makes for a lot of fun possibilities for fans to play with. I think one foundational aspect people might want to take into account tho is whether or not Grimwalkers are a completely different species.

Clones aren't their own species, after all. They're still whatever species they were cloned from. So it's easy to assume that a cloned witch, ie a Grimwalker, still has all the same physiological aspects of a witch.

(Sidenote: I get low-key annoyed when fandom throws around "species" and "extinct" in regards to Grimwalkers. Whether they're a distinct species is debatable, but I really don't think "extinct" is the proper word for their status. "Extinct" is something that happens to a species that can propagate itself when there's no one left to do the propagating, and if two Grimwalkers have a kid that kid's not gonna be a Grimwalker. They wouldn't be a clone of an ortet. If Grimwalkers are a distinct species, they're an artificially-created species, and they can be brought back whenever the knowledge/resources are available. If everyone in the world stopped breeding horses and donkeys, there wouldn't be any more mules, but would it be appropriate to say mules are extinct when they themselves were never able to create more mules, and horses and donkeys are still right there to bring them back?)

But then there's the fact that Hunter himself isn't a clone of a witch. He's a clone of a human. And I kinda wonder if that is a worrisome combination in and of itself. Grimwalkers are literally grown in the dirt, they're formed from the magic of the Boiling Isles itself. Is that process going to work well when it's trying to replicate a species that isn't even from the same dimension? It seems like Belos had several failed Grimwalker attempts before meeting the Collector--are they really that hard to make after procuring the rare ingredients, or is it just that the process to make a Grimwalker of a human is more complicated? Belos implied that all the other Grimwalkers looked different from Hunter--was that just regular cloning issues, or was that the Isles's magic struggling to create a witch and wondering wtf to do with all this human DNA? Hunter has pointed ears that appear to be perfectly natural, unlike Belos's--there's no way Caleb had DNA for pointy witch ears, so was the magic trying to override something there?

Personally I feel like Grimwalkers in general would end up with the exact same makeup as a witch, but the Wittebane Grimwalkers specifically probably have a whole host of genetic issues going on in there. Not that anyone is going to realize that that's the case, since any reliable information on Grimwalkers that used to exist was likely destroyed by Belos ages ago. Hunter's the only Grimwalker around, so he's the one all new Grimwalker knowledge will be based on. Everyone's gonna think all these issues are just regular Grimwalker things for like a century or so until some witch gets desperate enough to grimwalk their dead bestie and then goes "hey uh this Grimwalker has shown zero of those complications" lol.

Hunter and Willow both strike me as people who would absolutely love parenting and would 100% have kids together. And most people roll with Grimwalker biology not being a terribly big problem- at most I've seen a child with no magic or a galdorstone heart. Moringmark's au is probably the most interspecies offspring issues I've seen and that's between luz and Amity. But I've never seen the potential outcome Hunter could be straight up infertile- he wasn't born, after all, perhaps Grimwalkers are by their design meant to be one-off creatures that don't reproduce. Or- maybe worse, honestly, I think it would hurt more- they're not genetically compatible. Plenty of similar species can't crossbreed. Or, actually. No, worse than THAT. Many many hybrids have significant health issues as a result of their conflicting biology. Most are sterile. Ligers are essentially unable to stop growing and struggle beneath their own weight and have heart issues supporting their own bodies. The dogxim (fox/dog) hybrid showed signs of being significantly more susceptible to diseases than either parent. An overwhelming amount of hybrid offspring are stillborn or die in early infancy. Even those that survive childhood tend to be weaker, unhealthy, and often die young. They usually have big issues with their diets and what they can eat. I've never seen anymore touch on it and I think it's an interesting concept to explore with these characters.

Hunter: I can't believe I've deprived my dad of the opportunity to listen to Darius Deamonne discuss Abomination Coven safety standards in person.

(The new safety standards are a direct result of something Alador did recently.)

Runaway AU--Imagine Jasper and Hunter passing through a town, and they come across, like, a newstand, or a crystal ball shop with a big window display. And Darius is on the front page/on the glass for whatever reason--blah blah government official something something Abomination Coven news--and Jasper pauses to look.

And Hunter pays attention every time this happens, because that's Darius Deamonne, his dad's best friend who Hunter needs to go to if anything ever happens to his dad, so he'll check Darius's appearance to make sure he remembers it right and all that.

But he'll also pay attention to his dad, because the soft, fond look on his face is an expression Hunter usually only sees Jasper direct at him.

I don't think Hunter would be jealous or anything, but no matter the circumstances it's always kinda weird for kids when they consider their parents as anything other than their parents. So in this case it must be so odd and weirdly fascinating to see your chronically exhausted, constantly stressed father, whose only source of joy in life is you, light up a bit at the sight of someone else.

After a moment, Jasper remarks to Hunter, "That's my friend." And Hunter nods back, and they watch for another minute before they move on again. Maybe later that night, after they've made camp, Hunter manages to wheedle a few Darius stories out of Jasper. And he watches his dad's small smile while he recounts that friendship, and Hunter thinks that Darius Deamonne must be a really awesome guy if his dad can smile at just the thought of him.

I think it's one of the times hunter feels this... Lingering guilt. A tiny reminder that his dad had a life before him, one with things he cared about that he lost because he chose him over them.

Pregnant Belos AU--Belos figures if everyone's so convinced he has a uterus, he might as well use it to his advantage. Manipulators make use of all the tools at their disposal, y'know?

Except Belos is a 400-year-old Puritan who never seems to have had any female relatives, friends, or role models in his life, so he has no idea what he's trying to imply.

Like he just starts blaming everything he does on "hysteria."

Lilith finds him sitting at his desk in his completely-torn-apart study and she's like, my lord, is everything alright? And he's not gonna tell her that he's been ripping apart every laboratory and storage space he has in a desperate search for leftover selkidomus scales and the study was his last resort--so instead he just says, "Oh, yes, I just had a bout of hysteria" and Lilith is just like…uh, okay?

Someone suggests in a meeting that, well, it sucks that we lost Prince Hunter but if the empire is in need of an heir have you considered having a second-- And Belos just totally flips out, completely pissed off, yelling, angry gesturing, the whole deal. And then after everyone's cowering he calms down and goes "My apologies, I'm feeling a bit hysterical today" and everyone's just like…uh. Okay.

Bonus points if, through a weird coincidence of linguistic convergence, "hysteria" in the Demon Realm doesn't actually come from a word that meant "uterus", so there's just. No way anyone else is making this connection. Belos thinks he's being very scientific and precise in explaining himself and everyone else is just like. Why does he keep using that word?

On the plus side Belos has no idea who Sigmund Freud is so at least the castle will be spared that particular school of bullshit thought.

When Belos is dead and everything in the pregnant Belos au, can Hunter finally go to school or is there just still too much media coverage? Like he’s playing flyer derby with his friends and some random reporter or super fan shows up and bothers them. Like if they play against another team there would be a ton of people there just to see Hunter?

This does happen but Willow is an all-star girlfriend who is NOT afraid to throw a ball DIRECTLY at a reporters face live on camera, like, what are you gonna do, sue the girl who helped stop a genocide and saved your life? No, you're going to take a ball to the face and crawl away like a worm while she makes out with her bf on the flyer derby field and their friends aggressively boo at you

Which of course made no sense to ne but I blamed it on me being sleep deprived because everyone else seemed to get it. Now that I know that Jasper's book is being turned into some disturbing bootleg movie I would like to say DEAR GOD. GOOD LORD. WHAT THE FUCK. When Hexsquad is in the human realm Vee recognizes him from the posters and they end up in one of those arguments where it’s like “you’re the emperor’s son!” “Am not,” “are so!” And Camila gets a poorly summarized version of what’s going on that basically boils down to Hunter is the prince against his will.

Both on the run from Belos without ANY baggage of potentially hunter being complicit in her abuse! They can just be "I'm not touching you! I'm not touching!" Siblings

But re: eventually, pfffft omg she just. she tried to kill Lilith?? No wonder Belos goes for execution, he's like, absolutely not, no one can kill that heinous sorceress until she's gone back in time to break my nose. Omg. She wasn't even a rebel! Why do the CATTs even want to stop her execution?? (Is Raine upset on Eda's behalf or something?)

I was just thinking about Lazulas and how funny it is that she's, like, not a super important character, she's there if the plot needs her but otherwise she's just kinda in the background, and yet she somehow manages to get butterfly effected in every universe. Every AU gives her a completely different fate.

Like in Agony we're told that she retired (after having a probably-Kikimora-induced nervous breakdown) and funnily enough that's the kindest fate we've seen for her so far.

In MH she gets eaten by Hooty.

In eventually she…was gonna get petrified for some reason?? Unclear if they succeeded since the CATTs interrupted the petrification ceremony, but like, what did she DO that Belos decided to petrify her? What the heck led up to THAT?

I think those're the only 3 post-Jabberwocky stories she's been mentioned in so far, but those're 3 wildly different ends so I think that's neat. You should make Lazulas's fate an easter egg in every fic lol. Insert a mention of it in the most wildly coincidental way possible.

God you are SO right. Like I wanna be clear that I DO actually know the series of events leading up to each outcome and how the butterfly effect of Jasper's different outcomes caused them lmfao

In agony, kikimora wanted her job and caused her nervous breakdown. Obviously we saw what happened in MH. In runaway without jasper or s golden guard without jasper or a golden guard in training Lazulas took over his responsibilities, whereas normally that falls to Lilith so that she can train hunter to do them. Kikimora got her job without having to do away with her for it, but unfortunately that meant that Lazulas was a little more obsessed with her own power, and thus kikimora couldn't get her out of her position without killing her. Only she got caught, which is why she's a fugitive. And then finally in eventually, because of jaspers early and open rebellion it led to Raine forming the CATTs earlier and more formally, which means a LOT more shit for the emperors coven to deal with. With Lilith dealing a lot with hunter that made Lazulas feel frustrated because she felt like she was doing the work of a coven head without the credit, so she took a note out of kikimoras book and tried to kill lilith. And thus, public execution.

I'm imagining the synchronicity of sonic and shadow running to escape the collapsing ghost hill zone in sonic prime where they're bouncing off each other and the part where sonic grabs shadows hand and they do a little flip so shadow can throw him forward and generate like Centrifugal Force to make a larger jump and it's just so quick it's like second nature and it's like AHHHHH THEYRE IN SYNC and that's what I'm imagining with will and jasper fighting together. Synchronicity.
