Currently thinking about non-English translations of Jabberwocky, because it has to be so hard translating a nonsense poem.
And it’s not just making the nonsense words fit the translated language’s morphology, you have to have most of the nonsense words mean something for a later chapter in the book where Humpty Dumpty explains the portmanteau words. So in one Japanese translation, “frumious,” which is a portmanteau of “fuming” and “furious,” is translated as “takeburu,” which draws on the words “takeru,” fierce, and “keburu”, to smoke.
But I also just love the names of the Jabberwock in other languages. In French he’s le Jaseroque, der Jammerwoch in German, Barmaglot in Russian, and at least one Danish translation named him Kloppervok. It’s the one word you could very justifiably keep untranslated, but everyone wants to make the name fit, make it feel at home in the translation.
I have no point here, I just think it’s neat.

 The Jabberwocky’s words:
“Seeking.”
“Searching.”
“Scouring.”
“Stalking.”
“Searching. Scouring. Stalking.”
Little makes a noise
“Detecting.”
“Listening.”
Weiss and Blake approach with weapons drawn.
“DANGER!”
“Death!”
“FIGHT! RIP! TEAR!”
Yang attacks and it sees it’s outnumbered.
“Recede. Retreat. Wait. Return.”
So yeah, that’s not the last we’re seeing of that thing.

Me, hearing the words “chortle” or “gyre”, my ears perking and my eyes turning red as if I were a white rabbit: Jabberwocky?? The Jabberwock? ‘Twas Brillig??? Jabberwocky??? Frabjous day??

Tumblr media
Full Name: Jasper Wocky

Eye Color: "Eyes of Flame"
Hair Color: Black
Homeland: Forbidden Forest (forgotten forest in the Rose Queendom)
Dorm: Tulgey Woods
Year: 3rd
Club: Gargoyle Research Society
Best Subject: Astronomy
Worst Subject: Ancient Curses
Favorite Food: Cawl
Likes: Flying, visiting his parents graves, taking care of children, his found family, protecting others and starry nights
Dislikes: People being afraid of him, accidentally hurting others, hearing jabberwocky stories from those who grew up in the Rose Queendom and thinking about how his life will end (the vorpal sword)
Hobby: Taking friends onto flights
Personality: A mild membered and sweet jabberwocky who lost his parents as a child. A rare type of beastfolk who was protected in the forest through his parents sacrifice. He is very self sacrificing as he can only be killed by the vorpal sword(does not know if he has a long lifespan due to every jabberwocky being slain before the age of 30). The big brother of the Forbidden Forest who tries not to intimidate others as he tries to make friends.
Unique Magic: Frabjous Day: Turns into a jabberwocky (full "dragon" form). As he gains more control over it he can partially turn. He tries not to use it when possible though sometimes his UM goes off by itself.
Trivia:
Is the first child of the forest
Is the reborn version of the first jabberwocky slain by Alice (of many generations)
Ex boyfriend of Catherine Shire
The first time he lost control of his UM was when he was 14 where he changed form and caused the gash scars down Catherine's back.
His parents sacrificed themselves to turn into "statues" to protect the forest from possible invaders
Often returns home to visit these "statues" and talk to his parents
Is very close to Jensen Byrde (jubjub bird)
Is a great big brother those he was forced to grow up around 5 years old
Was alone in the forest for around 3 years (until Rose was abandoned in the forest, Altair got lost in the forest and Jensen escaped his cage)
Has a habit of kneeling down to talk to people shorted than him
Will cover those shorter than him with his wings when it's raining
Old designs comparison (from original to first revamp to now)
