Shooters gonna shoot I’m beyond thrilled to announce this grant. I’m in absolute awe, I’m honoured, and I feel proud and validated for every decision I’ve made and every partner I’ve worked with to get to this point. This grant is for a film/musical/theatre extravaganza of sorts— there’s a lot going on but more (and clearer) details to come. It’s with @thenewpeoplemusic, a music collective oriented around helping people find their voices and share their stories— something y’all know I’m quite passionate about. This will be my debut film and i can’t express how cool it feels to say those words. 6 months ago I left Toronto - the city I grew up in. I left a job with the army. I was working my way through my own existential fears and insecurities. I started taking therapy. I was working through my first experience falling out of love. I was going to be surrounded by new people in a new place. And oh yeah, all in the midst of a global pandemic. Change was happening in every aspect of my life, and at an incredible pace. Dorian Gray outlined a character afraid of this change. Their identity is tied to things outside of themselves - other people, external beauty, even their art. I finished Dorian Gray about 3 months ago as a reflection on my own experiences & insecurities. It’s amazing to look back on it now and realize, firstly, how far beyond these insecurities I’ve grown over the past few months. But also, how many of these changes have led me to some opportunities i never thought possible. You’ve likely heard that we secured a grant from the Canadian Arts Council this past week. Amazing. But there’s a larger picture that this coincides with. It’s a picture of someone, after 25 years, starting to come to grips with themselves, their core values, their convictions, while simultaneously being granted an opportunity to create and share art so that other people can find theirs. I’m so incredibly humbled, and proud, and frankly shocked at what’s transpired over this past week. Thank you all so much, it’s your continued support that’s allowed me these opportunities. Reading Jarocinski’s “Debussy - Impressionism & Symbolism” is interesting, because he argues that Debussy wasn’t taken seriously enough by critics, theorists, etc. by virtue of being lumped in w the other impressionists. He argues that the identity of “impressionist” overshadowed Debussy’s compositional merit, making him a less serious artist. It’s funny, bc I’d kill to be a part of the impressionist mvmt (or maybe some kinda neo-impressionist mvmt today). Having an identifiable aesthetic/sound and then a community that encompasses and embraces m said aesthetic is like striking gold for an artist. I think there’s a strong argument to be made that such communities can cultivate artistic development to an incredible degree (im thinking like New York / jazz culture).
