First attempt at a quarto bind and I’m very happy with it!

Monologue below

Used left-over handmade sugar-cane paper with some gorgeous green card for endpapers and leaf-paper inserts from an old project and since I didn’t have very much, thought I’d give a quarto a go. I messed up punching my holes tho and ended up with folded edges on both sides oops, but all foxed during trimming.

I bought a new toy! I got a cricut joy on sale yesterday so this was my first ever attempt at a vinyl decal and it only took to tries and I’m quite happy with it! I put it in an inset oval window just because idk. Hand sewed my endbands bc I hate myself apparently using silk-finish thread. I didn’t round/back my block because I honestly couldn’t be bothered, but I did use a slightly curved spine simply bc I liked how the shoulders looked with my endbands

Once again nerfed my the mistake I never learn from: not taking into account the 7mm gap either side of the spine so my covers are a few mm too long on the front edge but ONE DAY!! ONE DAY ILL STOP DOING THAT!! Also my window isn’t smooth but honestly ITS FINE 👽

I love binding, but I never have any of my own books! 😅. I always end up making them for other people or giving them away. If I do make myself any they always end up janky bc I’m trying something new or it’s fanfic, which is a little awkward to show acquaintances when if it comes up, so hopefully I manage to hang on to this one as my ‘look what I can do’ piece, rather than whipping out 200k of Merlin fanfic and trying to get around explaining what it is, exactly.

Shout out to the awful country town I’m unlucky enough to go to Uni in, who not only defunded the Mardi Gras celebration in March but also actively discouraged pride month celebrations and won’t shut up about their ‘win’. The cafe/studio that’s been a centre of the lgbtq community for years has shut down. Queer is still slung as a slur and my best friend can barely come visit me bc he’s trans and genuinely shouldn’t. My queer classmates are misgendered everyday, or we literally can’t refer to significant others as anything except ‘partner’ and very gender neutral terms and I HATE IT. and I have 3 more years at least.

I am forever in love with the scene where Merlin kills Agravaine. There's that exact moment (↑) in which he realises he has to do it, that Agravaine has to die, and I love the mixture of regret and badassery as he gets ready to do it. he knows he's the most powerful person in the room and he gives up any pretense otherwise. it's a glimpse into how powerful merlin could be if his magic did not need to be a secret. like, he may not enjoy killing, but he can and will do it.

the magic itself is also the coolest thing ever, so quietly powerful:

and who could forget, this incredible line after Agravaine finds out he has magic.

This fic has truly changed my life, I cannot even put into words how incredible of an experience this has been to write and to share with all of you. When I started 'The Once and Future Kings' almost four years ago so much was different. Writing this has genuinely been such a life changing thing - it has pushed me to pursue my dream of being an author again, introduced me to a whole new interest in life (arthurian legend) and challenged me to see what I can achieve if I really dedicate myself. I don't know where I'd be without it, and even knowing how much time, sweat and energy it would take to get here, I do think I would do it all again if given the chance.

A massive thank you to Rachel, my editor, without her, OAFK truly wouldn't have been possible. And also a huge thank you to every friend, and loved one who has listened to my endless rants and rambles about this fic.

Thank you to all of you for every single kudos, comment and kind word you've given this fic. I have read every comment, I have cherished every message and heart and smiley face you have sent my way. Yall im going to fail my exam and i swear if i fail this class im dropping out. this is a 6 year degree i am NOT making it 7 (i cant retake subject until this time next year and all of my courses are prerequisites for the next semester. I would literally not graduate until 2029) so naturally instead of studying im gonna post this to tumblr complaining send post.
