Misconceptions About Fairies
Tumblr media
Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of buzz around the Good People on social media, as well as in my local witchy community. I’ve also seen a lot of misinformation being passed along and people being encouraged to dive in the deep end without knowing what they’re getting into, so I want to address some common misconceptions and spotlight some resources I know are legit.
I’ve said it before and I’ve said it again: with the Good People, perhaps more than any other type of spirit, it’s very important to know what you’re doing before you start reaching out to them. They operate on rules and ethics that are very different from ours, and even the most benevolent of them may be offended or angered by ignorance or bad manners. You cannot skip the reading when it comes to working with these beings. If you’re not willing to do the research and make an effort to follow the rules, this is not a crowd you should be messing with. I don’t say this to scare people or to discourage people who genuinely feel called to establish a relationship with the Good People. I just want to be clear that with this crowd there are risks, and most of those risks can be addressed by making sure you’re prepared.
In this post, you’ll see me refer to this class or grouping of magical beings as the Good People, the Other Crowd, the Good Neighbors, or similar euphemisms. This is because the word “fairy” is widely considered offensive, and using it may anger the Good People. My advice is to use your own euphemisms in order to be polite, even in casual conversation – avoid “the f-word” as much as possible. However, I will be using Fairy (with a capital F) as the name of the realm or plane where the Other Crowd lives.
Now, let’s start by addressing those misconceptions, shall we?
1. The Good People are nature spirits.
This is one that I’ve been guilty of spreading in the past. This one is tricky, because some of the Other Crowd could be considered nature spirits, but not all of them. It’s important to remember that “fairy” (and more polite euphemisms) is an umbrella term for many different types of beings. It’s about as specific as “animal.” And just like some but not all animals are mammals, some but not all of the Good People are nature spirits.
As a whole, the Good People don’t seem particularly attached to nature, although some of them tend to avoid humans and end up in wild natural settings as a result. However, true nature spirits are connected to a place or natural feature the same way human spirits are attached to our bodies, and this doesn’t seem to be true for the Good People.
2. The Good People are angels and/or spirit guides.
This one usually shows up in the context of New Age spirituality, but the association between angels and the Good People is actually much, much older. When the people of the British Isles converted to Christianity, they tried to reconcile their belief in the Other Crowd with Christian cosmology. Usually, this meant identifying the Good People with devils, but some people identified them as fallen angels. One version of the Christianization of the Good People describes them as angels who refused to pick sides in the war between God and Satan and are exiled from both Heaven and Hell.
I’ve seen New Age authors like Doreen Virtue describe the Good People as “earth angels” or say that, like angels, they are “high vibrational” beings of pure love and light. This directly contradicts folklore, which describes the Good People as beings with physical bodies with a wide range of attitudes towards humans. The Good People could be helpful allies, mischievous pranksters, or cruel predators. Even the ones who seem to like humans aren’t especially pious or virtuous, and they definitely aren’t interested in our spiritual development.
The idea of the Good People are spirit guides reduces these beings, who are their own people with their own personalities, goals, and agendas, to servant spirits whose only purpose is to help us grow and learn. That’s a pretty self-centered approach to spirituality, and it’s honestly one that I don’t think many of the Good People would put up with.
3. The Good People are tiny and have wings.
I mean, some of them sort of look like this? There are folkloric accounts of beings that are between 6 and 18 inches tall, but as far as I can tell the wings are a modern development. Descriptions of tiny winged people who are small enough to take a nap inside a flower are a Victorian English invention, as popularized by the Cottingley Fairies hoax, a series of faked photographs that supposedly showed a real Otherwordly encounter:
Tumblr media
Most older descriptions from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Britain describe the Good People as looking similar to humans or animals. They might look like normal people except for being totally green, like the Green Children of Woolpit or the Green Knight that appears in Arthurian legend. They might be dressed in green and/or red. In folklore the Good People typically wear contemporary clothing, so if you saw one today they might very well be in jeans and a T-shirt. Sometimes in folklore, the Good People are indistinguishable from humans.
Some of the Other Crowd appear as animals, but there’s often some sort of tell that indicates an Otherworldly animal, like a kelpie appearing as a horse whose mane is always dripping or the púca appearing as a black horse with glowing golden eyes. Some of them don’t look like humans or like animals and are clearly Otherwordly in appearance, like trows, trolls, and goblins.
4. The Good People are All Friendly to Humans
Again, some of them are. Some of the Good People, like brownies, choose to live in humans’ homes and communities and actively help out around the house. Then there are others, like the Baobhan Síth, hags, and red caps that prey on humans, sometimes literally. Many of the Good People seem indifferent to humans.
The problem with this is that when you invite the Other Crowd into your home, you’re inviting all of them into your home. This is why I personally prefer to work with the Good Neighbors outside my home – we have an elder tree (a species associated with the Good Neighbors) growing on the edge of our property, and I use this as a place to leave offerings for them. This way I’m showing respect for them and offering gifts in good faith, but I’m not opening up my home.
Another option is to invite specific individuals or types of the Good People in by name. For example, there are things you can do to attract a brownie. I do want to note that even beings that are usually friendly, like brownies, can be dangerous if you piss them off, so you should only invite them into your home if you’re willing and able to commit to keeping them happy.
5. You have to be psychic or have the Second Sight to interact with the Good People.
First of all, I firmly believe that all people have the potential for psychic abilities and that anyone can develop these gifts through practice. In folklore there are ways of developing the Second Sight, if that’s something that is really important to you. (Just be aware that some of the Good People prefer to be unseen and can take offense to humans trying to look into Fairy.)
But you don’t need the Second Sight or experience with psychic practice to interact with the Good People. Most of the people who historically worked with these beings did not have the Sight. You can still leave offerings and see evidence of their presence, and if you really want to communicate with them directly you can use a divination tool.

it’s about the red/blue duality. it’s about the sun/moon duality. it's about fire/ice. the wealthiest son in the world/the poorest prince in the world. it’s about the talks/listens and the listens/talks. it’s about the passionate impulsive idealist x the strategic inventive pessimist!! it’s about the angry idealist x the funny, upbeat cynic! it's the boy who had everything he was told he could ever want yet had nothing, and then had nothing at all, with the boy who possessed nothing but had everything and then found even more, together. it’s about holding hands at boiling rock! it’s about the concept of duty and war and making your father proud! it’s about gender nonconformity and it’s about lost mothers. it's about imperialistic divide. it’s about the way they fill in each others’ holes. but it is, perhaps most importantly, about gay love.

Why is there no whipping emoji?
I would like for Apple to come out with a whipping and maybe a nay nay emoji please. I can’t keep taking pictures of myself whipping and naying just to send to my friends. I have to take different pictures every time because I am scared they will realize I’m sending the same ones and judge me. It’s exhausting. I currently only have $2 to donate to Apple to get this done but my brother owes me $5 so as soon as he pays me back I’ll have $7. If anyone knows how to get this done I’d appreciate them contacting me IMMEDIATELY. Thank you.

There are a couple of things about current shipping culture that confuse me.
1. The focus on whether or not a pairing will become canon as a reason people should ship something or not.  Do you not understand what the “transformative” part of “transformative works” means?”
2. This idea that saying “I ship that” means “I think that, as presented in canon, this is a perfect, healthy relationship that everyone should model their relationship after.”
Sometimes shipping something does mean that.  Sometimes shipping something means “Person A is a trash bag who doesn’t deserve person B but I would love to explore how Person A might grow to deserve Person B.” Sometimes it means “I want these characters to live together forever in a conflict free domestic AU.”  Sometimes it means “I want Person A to forever pine after Person B.  Nothing is beautiful and everything hurts.”  And sometimes it just means you like their faces and want to see Person A and Person B bone in various configurations and universes.

AU Idea
Okok so hear me out:
What if after graduation Izuku and Uraraka get together and eventually get married and have a kid (maybe a son??). But so one day they go on a mission together and they die saving Japan. The child is then left alone and all of their friends are trying to figure out who should take him when suddenly Bakugou shows up with a bunch of legal documents saying that the hero duo left their son to him. So he adopts the kid and everyone teases him that he only does such a nice thing because he secretly liked Uraraka. However in reality he was in love with Izuku and they were having an affair. But dundundun another plot twist point: Izuku and Uraraka didn’t really like each other anymore (they realized they were better off as close friends than lovers) but they couldn’t divorce because they didn’t want to do that to their only son who they love, plus the public backlash would be bad for their image. So they had decided to just put up with it and Uraraka was fine with (and even supportive of) Izuku being with Bakugou. But now they’re dead and Bakugou can’t bring himself to explain all that complicated crap to the kid because it might break his tiny weak heart so he just tells him that he was ‘close friends’ w his parents.

No one asked for this but here are my thoughts on epiode 61
So basically I watched the latest episode and after crying and rewatching the fight scene over about a thousand times I finally took out my phone and started scrolling through tumblr (mainly in search of some great bakudeku fanart I was sure had come out of that episode). I did find fanart as well as a couple fanfics I plan to read very soon, but I also came across a few posts that piqued my interest. A big chunk of the fandom seems to be talking about how great the ending scene was in which Deku asked Bakugou what he thought of his technique, and to be fair that was some cute ass shit. That being said I am also a manga reader, meaning I’m well aware of how my good man Horikoshi originally crafted that scene to go down. In the manga, which is cannon for all of you who are like “well it didn’t happen in the anime so it’s not cannon”, Bakugou F-ing Katsuki was the one to initiat the conversation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was such an amazing leap for my boy and I just feel like the amazing character development he’s gone through was completely ignored in the anime’s adaption. I mean yes I understand how adorable it was to see Deku finally ask his Kacchan for advice on the technique he’s been working so hard on, but I guess I just really felt disappointed that this wonderfully important turning point in Bakugous character wasn’t animated in the way I had hoped. Yes, he still gave Deku advice-which is crazy to think about I mean damn-but because Deku was the one to ask for it I felt like the effect was almost dulled in a way. I don’t know maybe I’m biased, I’m well aware of how I’m constantly searching for that #Character Development in the shows I watch/books I read. Plus, bakudeku is also currently my main otp and I’m well aware of how bakudeku shippers use that moment in the manga as a way to prove Bakugou’s ability to be a kind and supportive boyfriend to Deku if they ever got together. Nonetheless, I rest my case.

Just a lil drabble
I am human
I worry this is all I am
I wonder what will happen next
I want my life to change
I pray things will stay the same
I am human
I pretend everything is okay
I feel as if the world is caving in
I touch the hearts of many
I crave for someone to touch mine
I cry because there are people who try
I am human
I understand that I am a paradox
I say “I love you”
I dream of a day I will mean it
I try to be someone else
I hope I can one day stop
I am human

I’m Shippin’ It
Ok so here I am about 2 months into joining the bnha fandom and I’ve officially become a multi-shipper! This isn’t because I “can’t decide which one is better”, though I will admit that was the beginning of it all when I couldn’t decide if bakudeku would be better than tododeku or kiribaku. However now I can say very easily that the main reason I’m a multi-shipper is because I can fully understand each and every ship I come across. For example, I’ve never shipped a fictional poly relationship, not because I don’t like them, but simply because no matter how hard I tried to wrap my head around the idea-I just never could imagine those characters wanting to all be together. Bnha has changed that for me. While watching the show I only thought of 2 person relationships, however as I delved deeper into the fan-base and the ships that were going on I came across ones such as todobakudeku, kiribakudeku, and even kiritodobakudeku (which really is a mouthful, we definitely need to get a bit more creative with these ship names). Anyway, the more I read fanfics with them and saw fan art of these poly relationships I fell more and more in love with them. It didn’t take any effort at all for me to look at these ships and the characters and think “yeah this could totally be possible and would be absolutely adorable!” Now, my multi-shipping isn’t solely reserved for the poly relationships obviously. I also ship straight relationships (ie KaminarixJiro and TodorokixMomo) as well as gay relationships (ie TodorokixDeku and UrarakaxTsuyu). Basically what I’m trying to say is that being a multi-shipper is the best thing in the world. I can be screaming to a friend of mine about how much I would adore Deku and Uraraka being together and turn around and scream to another friend about how amazing it would be if Bakugo and Deku were together and during both screamfests I’d feel equally in love with each ship. I don’t join ship wars because I support them all and if one of my ships doesn’t become cannon so what? I’ve got like 10,000 backups. I don’t know if I can be a multi-shipper for any other fandom because I’m mostly able to believe that each ship is possible in this fandom due to how the characters in bnha are constantly evolving and becoming closer in different ways. None the less, I’m lovin’ it!
