“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” (2010): Scott Pilgrim of Toronto falls for American girl Ramona Flowers, but before the two can date in peace, he must fight and take down her seven evil exes. This movie is weird. A live-action movie based on a comic book series based around video game aesthetics, and its all full-blown here. I love it. Acting is odd. All the actors and actresses, like Michael Cera as Scott and Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Ramona give strange deliveries, very dry and monotone. Writing is a part of this. Lines are short and straightforward. Put together these characters sound either angry or not very caring if they get hit by a bus...which is honestly so relatable. It’s not for everyone. However, if it is your niche, it is going to be hilarious. And even if not, you can still chuck at how weird it is. I personally vibed with it. Music is anything but dead. Some of it reflects the video game style with 8-bits tunes. When that comes on, you will get so hyped for the action. Some of it takes the mad and depressed vibe and expresses it through rock and roll. We are given some very rockin’ jams; most of them are parodying the intensity of the genre, but there is one song that I put on repeat for a few days after because it’s all just that good. The most notable part is the visuals. Cinematography is very focused, no unnecessary movements, only shifting when revealing something new and important. Very reminiscent of a comic book. Even during action scenes, it’s only to focus on the fight, like a video game cutscene. Special effects stand out. Not realistic at all. Comic book and video game aesthetic. Very brightly colored. All for laughs and “Hey, I get that!” moments for the geeks like me. In all seriousness the movie nails down comics and games in live-action. All in all, will definitely keep your attention, and definitely recommended, for how weird but awesome it is. 80%. “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” is available on YouTube, Amazon Prime, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, Cinemax, and Netflix. #scottpilgrim #movie #review #comics #videogames #edgarwright #michaelcera #maryelizabethwinstead #universal #nofilter https://ift.tt/2TpDpk0

“La La Land” (2016) - Mia is an aspiring movie actress. Sebastian is an aspiring jazz musician. The two are in Los Angeles to achieve their dreams. Over time they fall in love, but both must face impossible obstacles reach their hopes that challenge themselves and each other. I will admit I have not had the greatest experience in love. My romance stories usually end with awkward ghosting or returns to the friendzone. However, this movie serves as a reminder that love is not dead. Where do I even start? Cinematography is noted. Plenty of long takes/tracking shots are utilized, giving off a dream-like state. You know those mornings you wake up from a really happy dream that makes you feel nostalgic and want to live? That’s the vibe this gives. It’s also fitting for this film’s themes of Hollywood dreams and the idealism that most out into them. The arts themselves are beautiful. Many movie and jazz references are prevalent. Mostly aesthetic, but if you’re one of us nerds, you’ll have the time of your life. The visual sequence harken back to Golden Age films and musicals, and the songs are reminiscent of classic numbers. Singing and dancing isn’t much from the stars, but as novices, they do an excellent job. I can promise you will look up at least one song from the soundtrack on YouTube. What’s best about this movie are the stars. Emma Stone’s Mia is sweet and fun, but very capable of sass. Ryan Gosling’s Sebastian is cool with attitude, but he is indeed charming. Their chemistry is spectacular. They tease each other, show off their skills, and bring each other to a wonderful world. I personally wouldn’t have minded if they were just friends. Then again, their romantic moments are squee-inducing. The passion they have for their respective art forms and each other truly shine when they converse. Overall, the epitome of love; not just for people, but for film, music, and life. 95%. “La La Land” is available on Amazon Prime, iTunes, Google Play, YouTube, Vudu, Microsoft, DirecTV, and FandangoNOW. #lalaland #movie #review #musical #hollywood #jazz #emmastone #ryangosling #nofilter https://ift.tt/2Vnn1OB

“Gravity” (2013): When her crew’s shuttle Explorer is hit by satellite debris, Dr. Ryan Stone is thrown off into space; now, she must survive the extremes of space and return to Earth before her time runs out. The acting adds to the terrifying mood. On one hand, Sandra Bullock’s Stone is an engineer, so she’s able to adapt to new situations and overcome challenges. On the other hand, she is so filled with fear throughout, at times messing with her logical thinking, that the viewer feels the stakes of the disaster and sympathizes with her. Nothing too outstandish as a character, but definitely performed excellently. Special mention to George Clooney’s Matt Kawalski; extremely charming goofing off, yet being professional and knowledgeable when needed. Special effects are also a highlight. CGI is used extensively, but it was made extremely realistic. There is so much detail put into the suits, space equipment and debris, Earth, asteroids, and the stars that it feels as if they filmed it on location. They also give good attention to physics; objects move and are thrusted as would be generally expected, moving at horrifyingly dangerous speeds. Anything not scientifically correct is changed specifically for the drama. This movie’s strongest trait is the cinematography. Most of it is long tracking shots, done in one take each lasting for over 10 minutes. However, the camera is always moving; even when focused on one subject, it is slowly scanning it, giving a disorientating atmosphere that one would feel when floating around above Earth. There are few times there is a cut, mostly because there is a time skip to different plot points skipping endless floating. While it would have been nice if the separate scenes were all continuous without random shot changes, it doesn’t take away from the beautiful visual experience. Like a roller coaster, it might make you sick, but it’ll be worth it for the exhilarating journey. Overall, terrifying in the best way possible. 9/10. Best suited for fans of thrillers and space. “Gravity” is available on YouTube, Google Play, Vudu, iTunes, Blu-ray, and DVD. #gravity #movie #review #sandrabullock #nofilter https://ift.tt/2GKaZLH
