It's the contrast of aesthetics, isn't it. The sad clown. The one who is meant to bring happiness being so deeply unhappy herself. If your goal in life is to bring joy to others, to live for others, then who brings joy to you? Entertainer, entertain thyself. Your first answer will be that living for others IS what brings you joy, of course.... And it's true... But you know it can't be everything. An audience can't fulfil you. Not fully. You need mutual understanding. Connection. A relationship that isn't parasocial. And when your whole role in life is to be entertaining, suddenly having emotional depth isn't convenient. It's not helpful. People don't expect that from you. They don't want it from you. You reach out, but the only way you know how is to tell a joke. But doctor, you say. I am Pagliacci.
