anyway uhhhh if you wanna catch up on the entire descendants series in chronological order + hardcover books + graphic novels + comics + manga i painstakingly scanned all of them & learned how to rip stuff from the library so

some of the scans suck because i didn't know what i was doing but when i can afford to i'm gonna buy second copies of each and make better ones 'cause i eventually figured out how to debind them ✌🏻

disney descendants musical

so music theatre international is releasing a stage production version/adaption of descendants that basically mashes all three movies into one. 

the whole script is available to read online here!! and you can listen to some of their versions of the songs. most of the dialogue and lyrics have been changed. i read it all today and here are a few of my thoughts:

1) my first reaction was that it felt soooo much more cohesive than the movies? since the parents obviously aren’t played by super big actors they’re able to be prevalent throughout the whole play. when mal returns to the island, maleficent hunts her down and confronts her. it’s still not as dark as the books (which will forever be my primary canon) but !! it was kind of a nice vibe to see things really addressed all the way through. 

2) hades, uma + pirates, dizzy, and celia do not exist in this version. while their absences are noticeable (and my girl uma is the loml!!) it almost makes the show feel like a continuation of the very first movie rather than the energy of the rest of the films. i’ve always been iffy about the “hades is mal’s dad surprise” storyline so i didn’t miss that at all 

3) jaylos !! gets !! so !! many !! duets !! they have an entire song together!! good to be bad’s lyrics are transformed into a song about tourney and it’s basically carlos and jay hyping each other up on the field and singing together !! the line “when i say v, you say k” changes to “when i say c, you say j” and honestly??? i’m living for this you guys

4) mal actually goes to evie before leaving auradon for the island?? she asks her to come. evie says no, which, kinda made me sad since i loved the movies showing her willing to give up auradon for mal, but !! i enjoyed mal going to evie before leaving. 

5) jay picks a fight with chad like 0.5 seconds after arriving in auradon and it was fucking hilarious

6) instead of “vks” the rotten four are called “evils” - which serves as sort of a reclaimed slur? ben and several others use “evil” as sort of a derogatory term for the island kids when they’re angry - such as “watch your tongue, evil!”

7) the love spell has a really bombass incantation about making ben “a slave to love” which is !! cool !!

8) the show still ends with the barrier/portal (they travel to auradon by portal in this) coming down/opening up for good but it coincides with maleficent turning into dust so :) 

9) i’ve already mentioned this but i feel like it needs to be highlighted again: an entire jaylos duet???? and versus of set it off are sung together ??? 

10) CORE FOUR CONTINUITY !!! there is some ben/mal yes, but on the whole????? the core four is a team from beginning to end and god it was exactly what i needed 

11) NO JANE/CARLOS ROMANCE. I REPEAT NO JANE/CARLOS ROMANCE WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS ADAPTATION 

12) mal rejecting the princess title !!!!! – “how about we just stick with mal, okay?” 

on the whole, the show wasn’t perfect and i missed some key characters (as well as the whole abusive!parental trauma thing), but !! i really really enjoyed getting a peak at what a core four centric storyline would look like for our rotten four. i quite missed them.

the only support I have is this??? Auradon prep athlete swap day??? In my HEART OF HEARTS this is a real thing and Ben & Jay swapped jerseys because they want to wear each other’s clothes thought it would be sooo funny to swap the king with an isle kid!! Haha totally normal!! Nothing weird!!

chronic pain and trauma bonding

"You run funny." 

Carlos stops running entirely. "Do not." 

Right. Weakness is a fate worse than death to the Isle kids. 

"Right," Ben says, looking carefully away. Eye contact is also a threat. He's got to look away, but stay alert. The most trustworthy position is shoulder-to-shoulder. Looking out, not looking at them. He knows this, now. "Of course not. If, hypothetically, you happened to want painkillers--" 

"I'm not dying." 

"You're allowed to take a painkiller before you feel like you're dying." 

"That's illegal." 

"I can assure you that it's not." 

Carlos laughs, soft and sharp and aimed mostly at the rubber-coated ground. "Name one law." 

Ben moves to hip check him, and stops short of making contact. Friendly roughhousing probably isn't the best idea if he's in pain, and it's an even worse idea if he's refusing to admit it. "Auradon Sovereignties law 56.A7, prohibits indentured servitude without pay, except for punishment after a crime convicted in a court of law"

"I set that bar too low." 

"You did," Ben agrees. "I can give you more, if you'd like." 

"Sure." 

"Auradon Sovereignties educational law, section 16.4.7. Says that all students must be given equal opportunity to participate in school-funded sports."  

"Bullshit." 

"For the purposes of that law," Ben says evenly. "Competition leagues, such as A.U.R.O.A.R.A. aren't school-funded. The schools can choose to have parents contribute to a private team that just happens to meet on school property." 

Carlos looks up just enough to flash him a sharp little smile. "So we're cheating the system. Competing on the R.O.A.R team." 

"You're scholarship students. There's a fund. Some generous donor gave a lot of money to make sure that Isle kids-- you guys, and the ones we're going to get out in the future-- can all play on whatever teams you want." 

A laugh. Good. He's not in so much pain he can't be distracted. "Is this generous donor in the room with us?"

"The donor set up the fund through an anonymous charity," Ben admits. "And uh, funneled the money through a fundfriend account that was closed a month after."

"Your dad must've been pissed." 

"He blames the Charmings, actually. They’re known Isle sympathizers. Chad has a baby sister, have you met her yet?" 

Carlos glances up at him. They're still walking on the track, but they're coming around the corner towards where their stuff is, so they'll be able to stop soon. If Ben can distract him enough, he might even win the painkiller argument this time. "M' not allowed off school property, so unless she's old enough to be here..." 

"She's at the junior school. Chloe. She, uh, bit me. When we were kids." 

That wins him a laugh. "So she's down to commit treason. Sounds like a cool kid."  

 Ben grins. Chloe really is a cool kid. The sort of little sister that he'd want, if he had one. He’s never resented his parents for leaving him an only child, but it’s hard not to wonder what his life might be like with a little brother or sister. "Yeah. She is. She's really into R.O.A.R, too. I used to spar with her over summer break, when Chad and I would hang out, and one time she saw a close opening and chomped down on my arm. I think I've still got a scar." 

Carlos's eyes flicker up to Ben's face, there and back again quicker than a flea hops up and down on a donkey's back. 

"I--" 

He stops. 

Ben keeps talking. He knows some tricks now, and silence has never made any of the Isle kids want to talk more. "Chloe used to get so mad about us being in the military academy all summer long. When we were out on the weekends she'd beg and beg for us to play with her. I think we must've broken fifty practice swords that summer." 

Carlos stops. "How old?" 

"What?" 

His voice grates. "How old were you? When you broke swords. With the Charmings." 

"I-- thirteen, maybe?" 

"Your sword killed me."
