Cassandra Cain's rebirthday
We've had one birthday, yes. But what about second birthday?
In Batgirl (2000) #33, Babs and Cass decide to celebrate Cass' birthday on the anniversary of the day that she became Batgirl.

Although in this same issue, David Cain reveals the anniversary of her birth falls on another date, January 26... â

...Cass still celebrates her new chosen birthday with her new chosen family.

In-universe, it looks like Cass became Batgirl in June-ish of the year-long "No Man's Land". She was given the mantle before the first day of summer (Detective Comics #735), which traditionally falls on June 21 in the USA. The "No Man's Land" timeline is famously resistant to sense, so the dates aren't certain. (Credit: JYD's Complete Guide to No Man's Land, and The Real Batman Chronology Project)
Cass became Batgirl in Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #120, whichâaccording to Mike's Amazing Worldâhas a real-world copyright date of May 21, a market release date of June 2, and a cover date of August.

So if you missed @casscainweek 2025 back in January â, or if you're already wanting an encore, you could still celebrate Cass' rebirthday festivities on June 2, or maybe May 21. â
Fun facts:
in Chinese text slang, 520 and 521 mean "I love you"; 5/20 and 5/21 are lucky dates for love
June's birth flower is the rose, a recurring motif in Cass' original Batgirl (2000) run đč
June's birth gemstone is the pearl. đŠȘ In the original Puckett Batgirl run, Cass famously pretends she's surrendering a pearl bracelet to Lady Shiva, but instead forces her injured arm to strike Shiva in one fluid movement. (Less serious connection: Cass is also known to enjoy pearl milk tea, a Taiwanese drink invented by someone who broke away from his family's traditionâhis family's tea tradition in his case, not a family tradition of deadly combat mastery. đ§)

Cassandra Cain I Am The Dog Animatic
happy birthday to my beloved blorbo... this is late to cass cain week because as you can see it is a behemoth and i spent 2 weeks on it. first time making smth like this but phew the things i would do for cass. Song is I Am the Dog by Sir Chloe
if you wanna read me yapping about every choice i made for these frames it is under the cut!!
I'm not going to be pulling each frame for this because that would be so much so Ill go by lyric :]
head underwater / hand in a fist
I start with cass post shiva fight after she wins and then immediately go all the way back in time to the act of violence that put cass on her suicide mission in the first place
hard to describe something ill never miss
baby cass is holding that mans throat in her hands, the most prominent mark on her chest is his blood / adult cass is holding her mask in her hand, and the most prominent mark on her chest is the bat symbol
i am the dog under your couch
this wolf is a reference to the mark of cain symbol which im...pretty sure is a wolf? its really shittily drawn and not a lot of references but whatever. she is being partially covered by the mark of her father.
gnashing teeth and open mouth
remember that time where cass conquered a pack of dogs (or wolves?) and then ate a cow raw. this is that
shouldn't have clawed my own way out
this is pretty self explanatory
loving you's my only house
OK! that one scene where we see cass's birth and it says the first sound she heard was her mother and the second was a gun shot? that made me terminally insane. this is that.
then we go through a fast montage of cass's important parental people in her life in order david/babs/bruce/shiva. we end with the scene we opened with in the beginning, zoomed out, and cass seems happier. yay!

A New Form of Love
Fic for the final day of @casscainweek!
Summary: This man hurt her father, but he kneels in front of her, hands extended like he expects her to place her tiny, breakable fingers in his palms. (During an encounter with David Cain, Bruce finds a child.)
Characters: Cassandra Cain, Bruce Wayne, David Cain, Dick Grayson
Warnings: Child abuse
You can read it here or on AO3!
This man hurt her father, but he kneels in front of her, hands extended like he expects her to place her tiny, breakable fingers in his palms. She knows better than to fall for that, knows what will happen. How the manâs hands will close tight over her own and snap, bringing blinding pain. And yet, he seems to be waiting.
This man hurt her father, but his body screams compassion as he moves his mouth, making strange sounds that the weapon does not know how to understand. They are gentle sounds, though, like something to make to a baby to hush it to sleep or to a wild creature to coax it out of hiding. The weapon has heard sounds like this, when she was brought out into the open with her father, but never directed towards her.
This man hurt her father, but he is not hurting her now. He falls silent, shoulders hunching in frustration, but he does not bring pain. Instead, he reaches up and removes the black fabric that covers most of his face. His piercing blue eyes fall on her with a mix of pity and hope.
Her hands have relaxed from their fists without her noticing. She knows that this man is dangerousâdangerous enough for her father to motion her to stay hidden while they fought. If father didnât think she was ready to fight him, then she is not. If the man wants to hurt her the way he hurt her father, she canât stop him. And yet, she feels strangely calm.
Slowly, the man reaches up to the weaponâs ear. She stares into his eyes, reading no malice. And then, he withdraws his hand with a flourish, brandishing a shiny object.
That wasnât in her ear! She would have known if it was! And yet, it wasnât in the manâs hand before. So where did it come from?
The man smiles. He closes his fist, but instead of using it to strike, he opens it again. The man gives an exaggerated look of fake surprise. Now, the shiny thing is gone!
Her eyes widen. She reaches forward despite herself, running her hand over the manâs black gloves to confirm that the shiny thing has indeed disappeared.
The man holds out his other hand, closed, and then unfurls his fingers. There it is!
She giggles, then immediately flinches back. Sounds are not permitted. Sounds mean pain. Punishment. A slap, bruises, blood.
Instead, the man smiles. He relaxes, holding out the hand with the shiny thing. Cautiously, she takes it, feeling the cold metal brush against her skin. Itâs strange. Metal is used to hurt, but all this thing does is sparkle.
The man places a hand against his chest and makes a sound. She frowns at him. He taps his chest. His body seems to curl in on itself, but with a sort of pride. Like he owns himself. Itâs a novel concept.
The man repeats the sound. âBruce.â ThatâŠmust be his sound. A sound for him. Father has sounds for the weapon, but he rarely uses them, preferring silence. Sounds donât belong in her world.
The weaponâs mouth opens. She tries to shove a sound out through it. Nothing comes. She closes her mouth, lowering her head in apology.
Still, the manâthe âBruceââdoes not bring punishment. Instead, he places two hands on her torso, just underneath her shoulders, and hoists her into the air. Her expression twists in shock and, for a moment, she expects pain.
No pain comes. Bruce just holds her against his chest, letting her head rest on his shoulder. Her eyes widen even further, her breath catching in her throat and fluttering there. This isâ
Father never lets her hold him, never holds her in return. Never lets her touch him or hug him or kiss him without a fight, without pain. But this strange man has lifted her from the ground and held her, and still his body is gentle. Itâs so warm. She doesnât want it to end.
But it will end. Better it ends now, before the kindness tears her heart from her chest.
Slowly, she brushes her lips against the Bruceâs cheek. She expects the man to drop her, for his grip to turn painful and constricting, for his hand to crack against her face. But he only reaches one hand into her head, running his fingers through her hair in reassurance. His body is not cold or angry. Instead, thereâs a sense of wonder, there. Bruce looks at her like she is amazing. Not the weapon, not the body, but her. The girl who pressed her lips to his cheek.
He speaks again. She doesnât understand, but his words are soft and soothing. When she puts her hands on his chest, she can feel it rise and fall, rise and fall. And his embrace is so warm, like nothing sheâs ever experienced.
Bruce begins to walk. He is carrying her away from her father. She should wiggle free. Fight. Run. Something. But instead, she closes her eyes and curls into him, holding the shiny thing close as she hides from the image of her father lying unconscious on the ground.
When she finally recovers enough to open her eyes and look around again, she is in a strange room. The walls are metal, and so is the floor and the ceiling. At the front of the room are two black cushioned seats, and along the walls there are several other seats with straps to hold a person, facing towards the center of the room. In one of the front seats sits another manâsmaller than the Bruce, still young, though not nearly as young as her, wearing bright-colored clothing. A boy.
Bruce places the weapon in one of the seats. No! She doesnât want him to let her go. This is the best thing she has ever had. She canât lose it.
She clings to the fabric on his sleeves. When he tries to pull away, the weapon leaps forwards. She knows how to play this game, how to earn being heldâher father only lets her hold onto him if she has him pinned to the ground.
The weapon sweeps Bruceâs legs from under him and catches him in an arm lock before throwing him over her shoulder. Still holding onto his arm, she crouches down and rests against his torso. He will throw her off and hurt her, hurt her bad, but it will be worth it, just to hold him for a few moments longer.
The boy in the bright clothes turns around and laughs. He says something, and Bruce grunts. Agreement. She doesnât know what the two men have agreed on. She doesnât even know why sheâs here. These men havenât hurt her and she let Bruce bring her here, but they are taking her away from her father. Should she be fighting them? Hurting them? She doesnât want to hurt them. Not when Bruce held her so gently.
Bruce escapes the arm lock, but he doesnât draw away. Instead, he picks her up again. He sits down on one of the seats and lets her rest on his lap.
Even if Bruce and his bright-colored friend are taking her away from her father, even if they will hurt her later like Bruce hurt him, this is worth it. She doesnât know how to thank them. Butâ
Carefully, she holds out the shiny thing to Bruce. An offering.
Rather than taking it, Bruce places his hand around her own, curling her fingers back over the shiny metal. His motions tell her that this is hers. She has never had anything that was hers before.
Bruce leans down and presses a kiss to her forehead. She gasps. There is something strange flowing from his body. Love. Not the ownership-love of her father, which twists something in her even as it fills her up, but a different love. Warm and gentle and kind. And new.
Entirely new.
She has never seen love of this kind before, but she imagines this is what she must look like if she could watch herself in a mirror. Because in this moment, she is certain she loves this man back.

Birds of Prey #1 Review!

I'll start this review by saying that yes this review can seem it's coming kind of late given this comic is now on 17 issues, but like I do reviews of comics on my own time, lmfao, and usually I like to start the beginning of the year with some Cass comic reviews and just decided to review the #1 issues of her most recent comics, lol.
Anyways, Birds of Prey #1 is quite fun, even if it isn't the old team that we're used to, I still think Kelly Thompson manages to make us fall in love with the newer team.
The first thing I immediately took notice of when reading this comic is that Kelly remembered Sin Lance, who is a character that many Black Canary fans might know hasn't appeared for quite some time in comics, so it was nice seeing confirmation of her existence again.

The next thing I took notice of was artist Leo Romero's stunning artwork.
He's working on the Spider-Man cartoon that comes out this year, and I can definitely understand why they got him, because his designs and art style are immaculate to say the least, lol.

Kelly Thompson already proves she has a really good understanding of Cass from how Dinah describes her, so I can already say that Kelly gets the Cass pass from me, lmfao. (I mean she's very much improved as well from reading some of the later issues, so yeah a big thumbs up.)

Of course, as a Cass fan, the best thing that I enjoyed about this first issue was OBVIOUSLY the relationship between Cass and Barda.
Really great dynamic and I'm glad it's become a staple in the series.
"Small Bat" is already an affectionate term towards Cass amongst Cass fans, so you can tell that the response to pairing these two was overwhelmingly positive.

Of course I would like to address a little bit of controversy with this issue too, that being Cassandra's fight with Harley... and honestly? I kind of like it, to me it's pretty comedic and it's not like it doesn't have context within Cassandra's history, if you read DC 1st Joker/Batgirl you would know that unpredictability is a way to throw Cass off her game.
(Also it's not like Cass doesn't struggle in the fight either, Harley doesn't beat her immediately, lol.)

Overall, I really liked this new Birds of Prey comic, it has some great Cass moments and I found the other characters to be respectively handled as well, a definite recommendation from me.

Well that's my Birds of Prey #1 review!
Another happy birthday to Cass, and as always stay tuned!

CassCainWeek day 7!
Prompt: free day | birthday!
No surreal emo drawing today, just memesâ Cass gets a card from her mom, inspired by the new Batgirl series <3 Happy golden birthday to Cass !! đ„łđ«

Image description: a set of memes in which Cassandra Cain, dressed in most of her batgirl suit (minus the cowl) and a striped party hat, opens a card which reads: âCassandraâ it is occasionally useful to me that you survived. âShiva.â Cassandra wears an expression of annoyance. In the next part, the page is split in two panels. The top panel shows Cassandra looking up from her apartment window, pointing a middle finger towards the sky. The bottom panel is Lady Shiva, who is watching Cassandra through a pair of binoculars from the roof of an adjacent apartment building. She shoots the bird back at Cassandra. Both middle fingers are pngâs positioned accordingly, because the artist cannot draw hands. End description.

Batgirl #1 Review!

I want to start this review by preferencing how kind of insane that it is that Cassandra Cain has an ongoing in the modern era, never in a million years did I or any other Cass fan think this would happen, but here we are. Let alone that it's GOOD.
Yes, Cassandra Cain's first ongoing in many years is of quality, from the very first page you can understand that writer Tate Brombal GETS this character.

Already we can see that this writer understands the complexities of Cass and Shiva's relationship.
This is not to mention the beauty of Takeshi Miayzawa's art, we really couldn't have asked for a better artist on this comic and I'm glad it was him.
I especially love the way they draw fight scenes, very dynamic and busy, as a fight scene with both Cass and Shiva should be.

This entire first arc of the comic is about Cass and Shiva's relationship, which has been explored before plenty of times to be fair, but to be honest I think there's something about the way that Brombal is presenting it that feels different.
Usually Shiva is presented as being too antagonistic or too emotional over Cass, which can feel very out of character for her.
But Brombal understands how to tow the line with Shiva's characterization, making her goals ambiguous and her attitude towards Cass mostly dismissive but still caring just enough to let us know that she's still on Cassandra's side.

Brombal also proves themselves as a long time Cass fan as a character from her first ongoing appears in this one, that being Shiva's disciple from Batgirl #26.

Overall, you can tell that this series was made by Cass fans for Cass fans, and I'm really excited to see where all of it goes next, I've already read issues #2 and 3 and can confirm that this series hasn't declined in quality whatsoever, so I'd definitely give it a huge recommendation!

Well, that's my review for Batgirl #1, a happy birthday to Cassandra Cain and as always stay tuned!
Same bat-time, same bat-channel!
