Coming quick at you, all the help that had been sent to my Island, is apparently on hold. Also the U.S. won’t open the borders so other countries can send aid and Trump is tweeting about it’s our fault. Puerto Rico has been an U.S. territory since 1898 and to this day we have no control of what comes through our borders because of The Jones Act.

You wanna help Puerto Rico? Call your Representative and your Senators and tell them to waive/repeal/ban The Jones Act.

We need to reconstruct and rise up again, not to be dragged while we’re down. We don’t need to be reminded of the country’s debt when there are towns that can’t be reached almost 7 days after Hurricane Maria, when power is still out and there’s no running water and communications are down. We don’t fucking need some inept talking about our debt, instead of opening the borders so doctors and engineers come and help, so other countries nearby can come and bring provisions too. So roads can be open and people can be helped.

once when i was just five years old, i found a footprint three times larger than my own that had clawed toes. my best friend and i declared it a monster’s and went back to chasing the reflection of the sun in rain puddles.

where i’m from

To kick off my blog, I’ll be posting a poem from my school assignment. It is influenced by “Where I’m From” by George Ella Lyon. Enjoy~

I am from multicolored scrawls in purple notebooks, from sloppy doodling on milky Sunday mornings, cross-legged on a black-and-white carpet older than myself. I am from rainbow gardens thrumming with the hum of bees and the tang of freshly-mown grass. I am from rusty swingsets that creak in the wind and blossom-white dresses rasping against my knees.

I am from libraries towering under overcast skies and waxy crayons dulled by eager children. I am from the rasp of a page under my fingertips. Magic, serpents, lion’s roars, the songs of stars above, tales that never stopped at The End. I am from the crooning harp of my grandmother’s voice, murmuring songs in a language I will never understand. I am from a polyester sheep I deemed a queen and the comfort she gave me on nights when I was afraid.

I am from cartoon cats pinned on my grandmother’s refrigerator, tiny train tracks winding through cardboard mountains, and the death that struck inches from my grandfather. I am from fresh countryside air and staggering at the enormity of farmlands, olive-green and butter-yellow, stretching beneath massive Swiss mountains. I am from 6am cartoons on a bleak Saturday morning, from a cat’s velvety fur brushing against my leg, and from thundering airplanes above a dusty garden bench.

Where I’m from is schlaf gut and eine guete. Where I’m from is sunrises spent in dusty playhouses. Where I’m from is the gateway of my hopes and dreams.
