I really do wonder if the reason people lost every brain cell they had when it came to the Lost finale is because the ending was too earnest for them. The last episode hits us over the head with what they want us to takeaway from it and what (in the writer’s minds) was the message of the show. And these messages are “the most important thing in this life is the people around us <3 we are nothing without our friends and loved ones <3 family is not the one you are born with but the one you create <3 the meaning of life is not what could possibly happen after it but the bonds we create and the people we love <3 there is darkness in the world but it’s important to always choose light <3 we must try our hardest to do good and we all have goodness inside of us <3” Again, they hit us over our head with these themes and there is no way you could miss it… except the majority of humanity did and decided that everyone must have been dead the whole time.

The way both IT adaptations approached racism and homophobia will always be so fascinating to me - whether or not certain aspects of the inclusion of these issues are well done or not.
Like, in the book, I’d say it’s made pretty clear that people don’t like Mike because he’s black and people don’t like Eddie because (they think) he’s gay. It’s pretty hard to deny this (unless you’re an idiot). Two of the biggest examples we’re given of the type of evil that It breeds is the burning down of the Black Spot in a racist hate crime and the murder of Adrian Mellon in a homophobic hate crime.
When we get to the 90s mini-series neither the Black Spot or Adrian Mellon are featured - which makes sense given the time it was made and the overall tone of the series. However it is still made damn clear that people in Derry don’t like Mike because he’s black. On the other hand, the fact that people don’t like Eddie because (they think) he’s gay is less clear. It’s more done with hints and nudges. Many viewers will still view people’s hatred of Eddie as homophobia, but you can also just ignore it and put their hatred of him up to any other reason if you wanted.
Then we get to the 2017 and 2019 movies. We’re back to it being made very clear that people don’t like Richie (as opposed to Eddie this time around) because he’s gay. Adrian Mellon and his death are prominently featured at the beginning of Part 2 and his death due to a hate crime is used to show us that Pennywise and the hate he breeds is truly back. But when it comes to Mike, the racism against him is all done with hints and nudges this time around. He’s an outsider, he doesn’t belong in Derry. Again, many viewers will rightly still view people’s hatred of Mike as racism, but you can also just ignore it and put it up to other reasons if you wanted. And all the attack on the Black Spot gets is a quick reference in the background of a scene that you’ll easily miss if you’re not looking out for it.
I think it can say a lot about both the time periods these adaptations were made in and what the filmmakers thought was important or felt comfortable making explicit.

Rewatching Lost after learning more about the making of the show is actually super fun cause you learn all these fun facts that enhance the experience! For example, you learn that the light slowly leaving Sayid’s eyes isn’t even acting, it’s Naveen Andrews becoming progressively exhausted with whatever the fuck they decided to do with his character next!

If Sun and Jin were on Love Island then Sun would originally couple up with Jae but it would only last a few days before he recouples with someone else so her and Jin couple up. They’re together for around a week before Jin starts to get really controlling so Sun leaves him and her and Jae get back together which everyone’s obsessed with. But then Jin starts trying really hard to prove to Sun that he can change and he’s trying to win her back with Michael acting as their go-between. People actually low-key just want both of them to couple up with Michael but he gets dumped from the villa when he’s not chosen in a recoupling and both of them are heartbroken over it. Sun eventually goes back to Jin which everyone hates cause it was nice actually seeing a woman with a backbone for once. But then they surprisingly survive casa amor and have the cutest reunion of all time and everyone jumps on the Sun and Jin train. They make it all the way to the finals and there’s a huge push for them to win but they loose to Jack and Kate because of racism and there’s this massive backlash against the show and huge discussions on the racism of the viewers

If Shannon and Sayid were on Love Island then Shannon would originally couple up with Boone, a friend of her’s from home who’s always been into her and is “coincidentally” in the villa at the same time. The public would really love them and get immediately invested in the “friends to lovers” narrative. But then Sayid would let her know he was interested in her and she’d immediately dump Boone for him, leading to a massive backlash from people because they “broke Boone’s heart” and got him sent home after they coupled up. Then they would separately end up in the bottom for least favourite girl and boy in the villa and Shannon would get sent home, which Sayid would be devastated by. He’d just kind of float for the next few weeks until casa comes around and they bring in his ex Nadia who he decides to try again with. All anyone in the villa talks about is how much happier he seems with her than he did with Shannon so he brings her back from casa but eventually realises he wasn’t really that into her in the first place and stringing her along like that is just mean. He very dramatically leaves the villa by choice and reunites with Shannon on the outside. They’re still hated for a while but eventually get a redemption arc in the public eye, not that they care cause they’ve just been living their best life and going on holidays together.

If Jack, Kate and Sawyer were on Love Island then Jack and Kate would couple up on day one and would be really smooth sailing for like 2 weeks until Kate admits to the rest of the girls that what she has with Sawyer is more than just a friendship (Sawyer would’ve just spent his time in various friendship couples not really finding someone up to that point). When she lets Jack know she wants to get to know Sawyer as well Jack flips out and says it’s me or him but then he just lets her do her thing anyway. They’d spend the next few weeks as the main characters while Kate failed to make her mind up but then right before casa amor Jack would basically remove himself from the situation and her and Sawyer would couple up. Then Jack would bring Juliet back from casa and Kate would get really jealous and realise her feeling for Jack were stronger than she originally thought leading them to couple up again. Sawyer and Juliet would end up in a friendship couple and the episode after people voted on who they wanted out a romantic connection would start between them but since nobody had a chance to see that before voting they end up in the bottom and the rest of the islanders decide to send them home because they have the weakest romantic connection. But then on the outside their relationship, to the shock of everyone, would last years and they’d end up engaged and married and all that. Meanwhile Jack and Kate make it to top 4 (maybe even win) but then they break up and get back together like 3 times just in one year after the show

The thing about Claire and Owen is like… if you called Owen Claire’s boyfriend to her face I think she would throw up in her mouth. She would be absolutely disgusted. If you called Claire Owen’s girlfriend he would probably just sigh and say “damn, I wish. She won’t give me the time of day.” But also they live together. And have a child together. And act like a married couple in every way possible. But don’t you dare say they’re dating. They would never do that
