Shannon’s Two Lines in “Numbers”

(and why they matter)

This is a concept that has been rolling around in my head for a while recently. Shannon has exactly two lines of dialogue in 1x18 “Numbers”. And they’re perfect. Here’s the scene with them in question:

SHANNON: When are you going to be back?

SAYID: If we can catch up to him, before nightfall. Why? You worried about me?

SHANNON: So what if I am?

Sayid’s line in between helps point out the significance of this seemingly surface level scene. In just two lines, Shannon gets her own moment of subtle characterization. This is the first time that she’s expressed genuine concern over someone in the longest time. The first time she allows herself to be vulnerable and ask someone she cares about when they’re coming back.

And when Sayid lightly pokes fun at her concern, she plays back with some light sarcasm/deflection, because this still feels new to her again. It’s been so long since she’s had a genuine partner to love and worry about, and the thought of something happening to Sayid out there terrifies her. She’s spent so long under the thumb of her brother and the guys she’s conspired with to get the will money that she’s still processing what it’s like to be cared for in return, that Sayid cares about her to come and see her before leaving.

This is her learning to accept her fresh start on the island and love not only Sayid, but herself.

Whew, haven’t been on here in a white! For the first time, I watched Lost. I finished it about a week ago and immediately started rewatching that. Sayid is my favorite character EVER, and I really grew to love Shannon. I’m devastated she was killed off so early! Even though the show came out 20 years ago, there is surprisingly not a lot of fan fiction about them! So I guess I’m going to dip my toe back into role playing, it’s been about 2 or 3 years, so I may be a little rusty 😅 All that being said, feel free to message me if you’re interested in playing Sayid Jarrah across my Shannon Rutherford!

I feel like this scene really solidifies early on how much Shannon fears being left alone/abandoned and why Sayid tells her “I will never leave you” with such conviction later on in the show. He picks up on her fear early on and uses the rest of the time they have together constantly reassuring her that he is going to protect her from that loneliness she’s so scared of.

something about sayid’s first ep being called solitary and shannon’s ep being called abandoned… something about how they’re both completely alone before the island. something about sayid being around shannon's age when the americans came and made him "something different"... something about how even on the island, they were both such outcasts from the rest of the group…. something about how they were each others most meaningful connections on the island. something about how they got to be the happiest versions of themselves together. something about how sayid is so much happier and friendlier with everyone after he starts talking to shannon. something about how their faces light up around each other. something about how gentle and smitten they are with each other. something about how they have the same dry, sarcastic sense of humor.... something about how shannon was the first person to care for sayid when everybody else acted like he could take care of himself. something about how shannon is the only person to thank sayid for all that he does. something about how sayid is the most capable person on the island and he’s the first person to take shannon seriously....... something about how sayid wears white in the first eight episodes until he tortures sawyer and reverts back to his old self, only to wear white again after he and shannon fall in love. something about how shannon would date rich older men because she thought they could take care of her and when she falls for sayid he helps her realise that she’s capable of taking care of herself.... something about how even after boone tells sayid this about shannon’s past, he still makes sure to tell her that she’s capable. something about how sayid talks with shannon while everybody else talks down to her. something about how when sayid stopped searching for love he found it with shannon right away. something about how shannon and sayid are the first serious couple on the island. something about how they're also the only island-made couple to have interacted before the crash. and something about how because of this, "you'll find me in the next life, if not this one," ends up being about shannon.

Shayid Island Date Night

Sayid knew Shannon was still grieving Boone; it was written all over her face. Sayid didn't need to use his well trained intuition to know that she was lying when she said she was fine.

Sayid didn't think he was a romantic, he just knew acts of service were his way of showing he cared. And when the hatch revealed a functioning kitchen and a fair amount of basic ingredients, Sayid knew what he needed to do.

When Sayid was first training as a chef in Paris, he had to be frugal with his ingredients since he had to buy them all himself, and he didn't have a lot of money. He practiced as much as he could so that he could impress the head chef and stop washing dishes. He knew how to make very little fill you up as well as how to turn cheap ingredients into a luxury on your lips.

Sayid had a plan in place. Locke supplied the meat as Sayid made it clear to him it was the least he could do for Shannon given the circumstances and he humbly agreed. Sayid began early in the day, knowing that a gamey meat like boar would need time.

Him and Shannon had both lived in Paris and he hoped maybe a taste of France would help both of them to transport themselves away from this horrible island. Boar would be a good substitute for Boeuf Bourguignon, as it would tenderize the meat, the pantry held wine and Sun had helped Sayid find some wild onions.

He told Jack he would cover the button for the evening and while the pot simmered he scanned the record collection for something remotely French. He settled for quiet jazz. He hoped Sun would remember to bring her just as the sun set. He was beginning to get nervous, worried Shannon would stay in her head or think he was being inconsiderate. But he finished plating the food and took a moment to check his hair in the mirror in the bathroom and he heard Shannon walk down the hall, so he hurried out to greet her.

She was staring at the setup Sayid had put together and he led her to the table and pulled out her chair. When he sat across from her, he saw a wide smile on her face and he didn't need anything else. The food didn't need to taste good, the wine didn't need to intoxicate them. Her smile was it.

People misunderstanding the dynamic between Sayid and Rousseau... that he cares for her and pities her because he sees himself in her and she represents the thing he fears most. Sayid spends the first 9 episodes of the show trying to get off the island because after 7 years of searching for Nadia, he thinks he's finally found her... just like Rousseau has spent the last 16 years looking for Alex and it has made her an absolute shell of herself – a mad woman. When Sayid is faced with the reality of what he has and is only going to become, of all the life he has wasted, all the people he has pulled away from and the communities he has lost, it offers him a chance to start over. This is why he asks Rousseau to come back to the survivors with him but she refuses, she's too far gone. He tells her that his search for Nadia has only made him pull away from other people, to crawl inside himself and stop living... and this wake-up call is what opens him up to the chance to start a new life on the island only three episodes later with Shannon.
