Nuclear Propulsion
In 1954, atomic energy became available with the commissioning of the USS Nautilus. Because a nuclear reactor did not require any oxygen, a single power plant was sufficient for both surface and underwater operation. Furthermore, a very small amount of nuclear fuel (enriched uranium) provided energy for a very long period of time, allowing a nuclear submarine to travel completely underwater at high speeds indefinitely.
This change was revolutionary. In a typical submarine attack before the advent of nuclear technology, the submarine would approach a target on the surface to avoid draining its batteries, and would only dive just before the target was sighted. Underwater entries had to be made at very slow speeds, probably no more than 2-3 knots, to avoid wasting battery power. Submarine commanders had to conserve battery charge until after the attack and use full underwater power (and perhaps at speeds of 7-10 knots) to avoid counterattacks. Even then, a full battery charge would only last about 1-2 hours at top speed. The need to conserve battery power meant that diesel-electric submarines had to approach their target as quietly and slowly as possible, meaning they could not attack most fast surface warships such as aircraft carriers or battleships.

For these reasons, diesel-electric submarines remain stealthy yet effective platforms, operating very quietly and conserving energy for escape after an attack. Since electric motors are quieter than nuclear units (and can even be shut off temporarily), they are sometimes proposed as anti-submarine vessels that silently wait for prey in areas where enemy submarines are known to pass. AIP offers the possibility of other tasks, such as: B. long-term operation in polar waters under ice, tracking coastal shipping in anti-terrorism operations, or sending special forces to foreign shores. Modern diesel-electric submarines, with or without AIP capabilities, are therefore affordable weapons platforms for many navies around the world that want to defend their coastal areas against any potential adversary (including nuclear-armed states).
