"We think we want the money, but that's not really it. It's a symbol of something and we should all be rewarded for doing good work, but it comes slowly....I never even noticed I was poor. I was too busy." ~Ray Bradbury (giving advice to young writers)

Every PASSIONATE negative video review I've seen of Elio so far have had only these top 3 points:
1. Openly hates the "bean mouth" "cal arts style" of animation and how it has ruined Pixar. 2. Goes off that the animation is terrible because it doesn't follow the Rule Of Thirds... while using promotional material as an example when it's only 15% of the movie. 3. Doesn't even pronounce the name right despite saying they saw the movie (this isn't a jab around accents or languages at all. the movie and promotional media literally tell you how it's pronounced)
Elio is not that bad of a movie, if I had kids, I would prefer to take them to this than Lilo and Stitch- and seeing low hanging criticism like this is becoming irritating. Pixar has had their falls with many projects in the past few years, like Elemental and Lightyear, now that Elio is in the mix- I'd say the more accurate source of criticism for it is that the movie just fell short in becoming great. It doesn't go into the main characters deep enough for the audience to be engaged, especially the relationship between Elio and his Aunt, I felt like there should have been more time to explore their dynamics to justify their actions towards each other. The climax/antagonist doesn't have super strong motifs or big enough risk for Elio, and despite enjoying a lot of the jokes- some of them felt like empty quickfire just to keep people talking in scenes. It's a mediocre children's movie, but still a delightful watch that I'd pay money for to watch again. It had all the likeable design elements of Strange World, a theme exploring young loneliness and the definition of family that the original Lilo and Stitch is known true for, and smart/small references to other sci-fi material that are obviously made by people who love movies (Alien, The Thing, even Starwars). You can definitely see the love that went into it from the creators Domee Shi (who directed and wrote Turning Red), Adrian Molina (who directed and wrote Coco), and Madeline Sharafian- who probably went through a lot of setbacks from Disney that they couldn't control that definitely contributed to its current box office presence. News articles might say that the movie is a big flop in sales, and reviewers either professional or someone like me might be grilling it- but I highly recommend everyone go see Elio while you still can in theaters.
