I haven't visited my family for a year and haven't lived with them long-term for six years, and my school days were long behind me. Yet, some mornings I wake up early from one of those dreams that are neither good nor bad but just feel never-ending, about a family member trying to maim me or being unprepared for the biggest exam of the school year. And I cry and remain confused for the whole day not because I am scared, but because I still feel sorry about how traumatic it must have been for the little me for the adult me to still be processing all of it.

Looking for a fic!

Getting out of my hiatus and making a post bc today I woke up with this fic in my head and I KNOW I didn't dream it up. But I can't find it anywhere.

It's for Debbie Ocean and Lou Miller in the Ocean's Eight fandom. These two stole/kidnapped/borrowed a kid to a garden party at the estate of Debbie's recently deceased relative, which was a job that had something to do with the will/inheritance of the estate? Debbie freaked out about the toddler but secretly she was really really good with children, and it got Lou thinking. It's angsty but super super soft too.

I thought 'I've seen this film ten times. I won't cry *this time*. I'll just put it on in the background whilst I do something else.' And then halfway into it my whole body was shaking as I stood in the middle of my room and cried my eyes out

watched the curious case of benjamin button tonight. the whole time i like "i won't cry to this!! watch." then they were like "hey old lady cate blanchett! this 13 year old version of brad pitt has dementia, but he remembers how to play a quaint little ditty on the piano" and i was bawling. i amaze myself

The eye contact bit:

In both the UK and the Netherlands (two countries I've lived for extended periods, not just visited as tourists) people seem to want you to make eye contact. For me (Chinese, raised in a liberal but terribly introverted Chinese family) the intensity of the eye contact can kill me I'm never going to formulate a complete sentence whilst staring at any part of someone's face. So if my gaze is on someone's shirt buttons or collar band, it's not because I'm not paying attention or staring at their body, it's just that my eyes have to look somewhere and I happen to be interested in fashion and textile (inconvenient I know)

I love learning about other culture's Houseguest Protocols but I hate hate hate when they don't match up cause like

the decrease in costuming quality over the last 20 years has been soooo precipitous & nauseating. i’m not even talking abt marvel’s cg supersuits or anything this time, look at the fabric quality, structure, layering, character, and craftsmanship of older costumes in 102 dalmations (2000) vs cruella (2021)

lord of the rings (2001-2003) vs the rings of power (2022)

this trend should upset you not just because it looks cheap, but because it suggests a strong anti-art and anti-labor movement in film and tv making. don’t forget costumers are unionized

Which intervention level (individual, interpersonal, organizational, systemic) resonates most with you? Describe an action step you intend to take to advance sexual and gender minority (SGM) health equity at this intervention level.

I have always been most fulfilled by making changes at the interpersonal level. Individual changes are probably the easiest to complete but don't have that same sense of fulfillment and organizational/systemic changes are often a bit too daunting and I become easily overwhelmed with so many changes needed.

I have already made some significant interpersonal interventions since co-creating a LGBTQIA+ family medicine curriculum. The one intervention that really left an impact was just openly discussing the community and their needs with a co-resident who was very hesitant about caring for this community and listening to the bad experiences she had had with a member of the community in the past. She felt heard and was then open to taking in more information and learned that several of her colleagues also belong to the community. I watched her become more engaged through further lectures and start to relate the SGM health issues to issues she has faced as a racial minority. She then graduated and went on to provide care for minorities of all types in Missouri, somewhere that desperately needs open minded people like the amazing doctor that I watched her become.

My next interpersonal action step is to teach our new interns about LGBTQIA+ competent care. They are all so excited to learn how to best treat all of their patients. Unfortunately, it is up in the air as to whether our residency will allow me to continue giving regular formal lectures on this topic as there has been a lot of push back from a few opposing individuals. Regardless, me and my colleague who developed the curriculum are seen as experts in this field of medicine, especially gender affirming care, and the interns have already started bringing all of their questions about that to us. While I have quite a ways to go before I consider myself an expert, I do have a lot of knowledge and resources at my disposal and I look forward to teaching them how to best treat all of their patients regardless of my ability to have formal lectures.
