Ellis- a show in immigration
Hey all! I'm working with a local theatre company on producing a show on immigration. Here's the official email Kelly sent out. If you have any stories to share please send them our way! Hello, My name is Kelly Coffey and I am a founding member of a local performance company called Cooperative Performance. We are currently working on a project in collaboration with Alejandra Gonzalez (who will also be performing in the show telling her own personal story of immigration), called ELLIS and we are seeking local stories of immigration. ELLIS is a platform for our local community to share their stories of immigration and cultures. Through this work, Cooperative Performance seeks to humanize and fight ignorance regarding immigration via education and storytelling. We intend to send out a call for submissions to New York as well, but would prefer to keep the stories local if possible. We plan to perform for 3 weekends in February 2018 at Alverno College. We are also extremely interested in the possibility of performing a one time performance at Milwaukee City Hall in the rotunda. We are writing to you for help in the hopes of finding local stories that people are willing to share. We can keep stories anonymous or let people perform their own story if they are willing and able. We have sent out requests for local stories via social media and personal emails, and planning a one day storytelling workshop at Alverno in October (date tbd) for students and community to find ways to tell their own story. We haven't gotten a lot of response in part due to the political fear and unknown in our community related to immigration. We would appreciate your help in any way. This is ultimately a celebration of immigration through various stories and cultures. Below is our call for submissions that we've been sharing. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or thoughts. Thank you! Sincerely, Kelly Coffey http://www.cooperformke.com/ https://www.facebook.com/cooperformke/ *CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS* Cooperative Performance, an avant-garde theatre/dance collective located in the heart of Milwaukee, is calling for story submissions for ELLIS, to be performed in Feb/March 2018. Directed by Kelly Coffey and Don Russell in collaboration with Alejandra Gonzalez, ELLIS is an original adaptation of your personal immigration stories from past to present. Writers/Artists are encouraged, but not required, to perform their own work. ELLIS is a platform for our local community to share their stories of immigration and cultures. Through this work, Cooperative Performance seeks to humanize and fight ignorance regarding immigration via education and storytelling. Submissions must involve an interpretation of a personal immigration story, past or present, with focus on the greater Milwaukee area. We are interested in all forms of storytelling: text, spoken word, poetry, dance, music (traditional or an original song), visual art, short films, etc. Cooperative Performance strongly encourages non-English and bilingual submissions with translation provided. All works should be no longer than 7 minutes and applicants must be 18 or older. Please include your name, email, and phone number with submission. All submissions may be sent via email to Kelly Coffey at [email protected] *DEADLINE to submit is OCTOBER 31st, 2017* Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis. If selected, you grant permission for directors to respectfully edit work for the final performance piece. Selected applicants will be notified of their piece's acceptance no later than December 1, 2017.

for me, identifying myself as a cis-gendered woman is reducing myself to a clinical/severe science. it feels to me, this word and its meaning, cold, sterile, and small. i am far from simple, far from small, far from a latin word created by/used by a man to label my genes, and used by others to label my body, my gender, my energy, or my magic. this word’s original meaning comes as ‘on the side of, and for me when it comes to gender, whatever that does or does not look like, i do not have a side. i support all the various ways we as humans come to the earth. i have never liked the vibration of this word, cringe every time i hear it. nothing about this word warms my soul, speaks to me, of me, about me. i am not a genetic mutation, and neither the worlds of latin or this kind of science is where my construction hails from. everyone elses relationship with this word and its meaning, and how it feels for them, is theirs, i choose not to have one. i already struggle with how demanding, invasive, and unsupportive english is as a construct, word are forced on me everyday, and i’m always hard-pressed to find myself in this language. this name making kind of, clinical, obedience requiring science is also something i face everyday in the medical world, in life. i do not want or need anyone saying to me, this is your word, you MUST use it as part of your definition, you MUST agree that this is who you are. not identifying as cis, does not mean i do not acknowledge the very real oppression that faces others, and not myself in the same way. i understand that in this societal structure i am privileged, and others are not, and that breaks my heart. it is the good kind of heart break, though, because it keeps me aware, tender, honest, and committed to doing my soul work and living in a way that seeks to honor everyone and to doing my utmost not to be a part of anyones oppression, but a part of their freedom.
“not everyone identifies as cis, this kind of science is not my author," nayyirah waheed
"Cis-” as a prefix of Latin origin, meaning “on the same side [as]“ or “on this side [of]”,
‘The terms “cis" and “trans" were used by Seymour Benzer in genetics in his analysis of different senses of the word “gene" in 1955-7[9] to represent two forms of mutations, when both on same chromosome or on separate chromosomes or DNA strands.

not sure how i feel about this.
seems like the same concept of how “beautiful” it is to be colorblind which we all know simply negates the struggles of people of color by choosing to be some sort of transcendental guru that “doesnt see the colors of peoples’ skin". I know that she doesn’t have ill intentions, but i find her stance to be offensive masked in verbose diction.

I deleted a post earlier about this but fuck it…all of this blah blah blah just says to me “I’m cis but the word is kinda annoying so I don’t want to be called that. The word (like every other word) derived from something and somebody and I wanna make up my own words to make me feel better and easily dodge any trans topics or acknowledging privilege.“
aka utter bullshit. how you gon’ hop skip jump and dip around a word as real as the skin you live in? Yeah it’d be nice if we could just make up things to identify us but then it’d be like the tower of babel. Some things must be agreed upon ESPECIALLY when talking about oppressed and marginalized groups of people! I am sick and tired of people saying things like “I’m not white I’m peach” “I’m not a man I’m human" etc to dodge the fact that you can redefine yourself because you have been given the power to define! Meanwhile my trans lovelies have been labeled and defined against their will as a multitude of ugly and terrible things. You don’t want to identify as cis yet you don’t seem to care if you bask in the privilege of it?!?! so. disgusted. And the nerve to bury this in “prose" and artistry. I mean, really? Words are forced on you everyday? I’m sure they are. But a lot of words aren’t. Like shem*le, tr***y, freak, abomination, it, and other things I won’t continue to list. I’m fucking over it. Bullshit. Until trans people don’t have to fear going to the bathroom, fear being outed, fear being killed because “she tricked me" I don’t give a flying freeze-dried fuck about no goddamn vibrations. GTFOH. period. point blank.

omg i just got my life…..
reblogging for commentary.

cisgender is not something you can choose to not identify as, just like if you’re white and you call yourself a human being, you’re still white and enjoy all of the privileges included. whiteness is scientifically nonexistent/inaccurate as well, but we generally agree that to treat people as though whiteness is not there is ridiculous, since it does exist socially and culturally. lots of white people dont identify as white, but they are still white! same here. also, the very fact that you feel as though you can make this choice, when many people don’t have the luxury of choosing, says quite a bit about your privilege.
why am i not surprised at the continued cissexist failures from this person?
edit: i just noticed that this is like the position radfems use to argue trans people out of existence. it’s a passive-aggressive way of saying “if you identify this way, you are reinforcing the system!!!! i am better than you.”

Kickstarter launch day has arrived for my first comic book project Fae Noir! Written and hosted by my project partner Justin Bow, and illustrated by myself.
Imagine that the earth has been invaded by a host of fae creatures set on conquering the world of man during the height of World War 1. The fae have not been seen for 500 years, but they are now set on world domination. Man has long forgotten about the world of magic, but his newly realized potential for mechanized warfare has leveled the playing field. As the invasion ensues the nations of the world scramble for new alliances to defeat the fae. Imagine aerial dog fights between The Red Baron and dragons. Imagine trench warfare with trolls and goblins. Picture battling giants and winged fairies with mustard gas and flame throwers. In the end the kingdoms of the fae are defeated. New treaties are drawn, and order realigns. Our story picks up in 1924 Brooklyn. Long Island still smolders from the battles fought there between the fae and the American military barely more then a decade before the story begins.
Now it’s the Roaring 20’s and everyone wants to forget the horrors of a war that spanned continents and dimensions. But the changes it wrought are not so easily dismissed. Humanity struggles to understand a world of re-awakened magic and folklore come to life. The failed invaders from the lands of faery find themselves adrift in the unfamiliar modern world, living relics of the past. It is an era of jazz and exploration, of art deco and danger; a time when the fists and courage of individuals can determine the course of history.
