A blog filling in the gaps of my project work. Laying all foundations needed to create good things and to create well. I've been through a lot of phases as a maker and it becomes a moment in a creators life when they say that you should just buy quality tools and supplies to create good things. A great crafter never blames their tools but a seasoned one knows what's good. I make because I'm passionate about making and I make so that I can sing in harmony with myself.

Found the first moodboard I made when creating the gauntlet. It seems I wanted it to be dripping with gold more than the final version came out. Left to my own devices I channel the sun and can end up loosing reality. The moon is also vital to my energy too. I do have to hold that I wanted some big old 80s sfx hands on it. I loved Kryten from Red Dwarf as a kid, like in a personality forming way.

My work computer is not working so instead I'm trying to figure out how to make a laser cut brass orrery that would hold stone spheres as the planets.

A first go at getting the shape of the fingers for the gauntlets. I'll need to work out how I'm going to get rid of some of the harsh lines that appear in the render but I reckon I can hide some and might be able to find work arounds for others. It's a good start but there are some issues that will need working out.

The first set of lines in the 3D model. Measure 94 times, cut once!

I've had chance to remake the fingers for my gauntlet. I didn't think I'd have chance to go back into this project but it's going to be nice to level up my 3D modelling skills for use with CAD software with the chance to 3D print the parts in a flexible resin. They'll come off the bed ready to go and I'll get chance to dye and have a go at painting them to fit the current gauntlet scheme.

Some of the gauntlet’s internals. I learned a trick or two when I did some work for a rather large corporation who like super heros in making costume armour. It’s important that the insides of the gauntlet be as flush and as sturdy as possible because there’s only an opera glove between nuts and bolts and a person’s skin but this has to last for an entire shoot and still actuate correctly.

A film about being manly and making a gauntlet, rebuilding a part of myself in a gritty sparks flying kind of way.
I worked with a producer and videographer to create this and I directed on story and colour grading. I’d never directed a film before and it was really rather daunting considering I was not having a good time in general with nerves.
If this was solely my creation it would have turned out a whole lot queerer. Whilst I thoroughly loved making the gauntlet itself, the film was difficult. There were things I’d lost habit of for collaboration and defences I didn’t have up. Whilst living in my pandemic hovel.

I spent a long time testing to make an elbow joint that would flatten out when the wearer extends their arm, in the way a person’s arm does. With this piece I wanted this to take on the classic anime trope of loose a part of you and replace it so I wanted this to look like it could be an arm.

The design that came out of the prototype. I made this at the height of infinity gauntlet hype and the colourful disco vibes soaked all the way through.

Some design developments and technical drawings from the first prototype gauntlet, I really got stuck in my head about a lot of the design of this but this was one of the first times I’d done a lot of drawings to figure something out.

This was the first prototype of this design. I wanted to do something I’d never seen done before with the fingers. I wanted to make elasticated finger joints that were segmented. I’d say they didn’t turn out very good at all so I scrapped them for the final make. It was a fun experiment in design and laser cutting thin cosplay foam.

The making of this gauntlet was a part of my becoming. I’d had a lot of hurt done to me and done a lot of hurt to myself in the past. But this was a chance to put trust in myself and follow through with an idea that means a lot to me. I’ll be posting process shots and what it all meant to me as I was making.
