Hey! How are you? 🙋🏻‍♂️ I’m doing well; life has been incredibly busy for me these last three weeks. I’m the type of person that likes being busy, however, because of that some things in my life get neglected — in my case it’s been my Instagram and YouTube. I’ve worked so hard to build a close community on both social media platforms. So it always makes me feel like I’m failing those communities when I become bogged down with other priorities that demand my focus. Anyone else relate? This year has challenged us all more than we could had ever imagined it would on Jan. 1, 2020. It seems like we all find ourselves feeling stuck in the fight or flight mode causing extra anxiety, fatigue, depression, loneliness, and so on. I always wanted to create a place that people could go to get away from those heavy feelings or at least be able to acknowledge them and see that they’re not alone. Yet when people have needed that the most I have been unable to rise to the challenge. It’s been difficult to feel creative or inspired to create content that’s worthy of the time we’re living in. I genuinely care about you all and hope that you know I’m always here cheering you on, even if I’m not able to put out meaningful content. From thestoryoftexas.com ⬇️ “With their arrival in 1528, people of African descent, enslaved and free, were instrumental in the settlement of Spanish Texas. Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821. Under Mexican rule, slavery was officially outlawed in Texas by 1829. However, special consideration given to Anglo settlers meant that the enslaved population of Texas continued to grow, as enslaved men and women were forced to accompany their enslavers on their journey into Texas. African American life after Texas Independence was shaped by new and existing legal constraints, enslavement, and violence. Free blacks struggled with new laws banning them from residence in the state, while the majority of black Texans remained enslaved. Texas's enslaved population grew rapidly: while there were 30,000 enslaved people in Texas in 1845, the census lists 58,161 enslaved African Americans in 1850. The number had increased to 182,566 by 1860. Most enslaved people in Texas were brought by white families from the southern United States. Some enslaved people came through the domestic slave trade, which was centered in New Orleans. A smaller number of enslaved people were brought via the international slave trade, though this had been illegal since 1806. On February 23, 1861, Texans voted to secede from the Union and joined the Confederate States of America. Because Texas remained relatively unscathed by fighting during the war, life for enslaved African Americans continued in much the same way as it had before the fighting. Felix Haywood, who worked as a cowboy while enslaved in San Antonio, described his experience of the war when interviewed in 1937: “It’s a funny thing how folks always want to know about the war. The war wasn’t so great as folks suppose. Sometimes you didn’t know it was going on. It was the ending of it that made the difference." On June 19, 1865 General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston and declared that enslavement was ended. So many feelings today. It’s odd, having your rights being debated in the US Supreme Court over and over because you happen to be gay (lgtbqia+). I mean I’m just being me and because of that, there are people (my fellow citizens) who fear me, hate me, and even wish ill will towards me, and therefore want to deny me my right to life, love, sex, marriage, or work based off the arrogant belief that they know my sexual orientation better than I do. Because of this bigotry and bias it has taken 243 years, 5 months, and 15 days of American existence before it finally ruled that I, Chaz Christopher, cannot legally be fired from a place my place of employment for being who I happen to be - a gay guy - or in other words a HUMAN. This is why we celebrate Pride as a continuous form of protest, because in America, if you’re different than the majority, you sadly have to continuously fight for your constitutionally given rights. We’re seeing this still happen to black and brown Americans in real time each day. We do not have justice for all here; therefore, we all must continue to fight every day until we do.
