what do y’all think of season 5?
there have been some great moments, but imo, it’s been the weakest season overall. there are still three more episodes, and maybe we’ll have a really great season finale, but in comparison to the other seasons, something is missing?? idk am i the only one? genuinely curious about what other ppl think and how yall would rank the seasons
I think my personal ranking would be:
1. season 2 - strong season narrative w/ armstrong, day of death ep, intro of Nyla + settling in of rookies with their TOs which leads to some GREAT interactions esp with chenford, lots of memorable emotional and comedic moments
2. season 1 - a really good intro to the show but you can tell they were trying to figure some things out (the ill-fated nolan/lucy relationship). rookie nolan is also the best iteration of the character cause his storylines have been stale since he graduated
3. season 4 - eh middle of the pack, it does have some great rewatchable moments and i like aaron
4. season 3 - being a COVID production didn’t do it favors. i do like the intro to UC Lucy, la fiera, the true crime cult ep, and tim as man of honor, but the season kinda feels like a filler otherwise
5. season 5 - i don’t find any particular episodes very memorable. it feels like there’s been a writing or tonal shift?? i think the rookie has always done a good job of balancing comedy/serious, but this season has been a little silly tbh and it doesnt feel like there’s an overall storyline cause we’re not spending time with characters cause theres sooo much going on

There’s nothing wrong with being disappointed. It’s rare that the media we love is without imperfections, and it’s valid as fans to make criticisms. However, it’s never okay to turn those criticisms into attacks towards the crew, and I honestly thought we were past that cause wtf were some y’all raised in a barn???
I was a little disappointed there wasn’t some acknowledgment of their relationship because my subjective viewing experience was that the show had set up their secret relationship to be kind of a big deal, so I expected some kind of follow up with the reveal of their relationship. But reality rarely meets expectations, so I’m a little disappointed but c’est la vie, I’ll move on cause at the end of the day, The Rookie is my comfort show and I’m just really happy to see Lucy and Tim together.
Eric said everyone already knows. Why are they robbing us of the #Chenford content we've always wanted?
ok first a blanket statement: the fact that we likely won't get an "everyone finds out" scene is not a problem for me. i'm sure it would have been fun in theory but honestly...not something i need from the show. i do think it would have been great to see an angela/tim scene – and i don't think that's off the table, necessarily – but i'm cool with it just being a naturally accepted thing. so much of their lives take place off-screen...sometimes, we just have to headcanon it and move on. it is ok if you feel differently! i am mostly saying this bc i think it colors my answer here.
i really don't have a lot to say about this other than i'm sorry you feel that way and i hope you can find fanfic that fills that spot for you. also just like...personally i think asking eric all these questions about the show, while i know it comes from a place of care, is probably doing more harm than good for the fandom as a whole. he has to be really limited with his answers – and as an actor on the show, he only knows so much. obviously he knows how he plays tim/the things he incorporates into the character, but he's not a writer. he's working with what's on the page, not writing the pages themselves – so his knowledge is a bit more streamlined overall.
obviously i know people are going to do what they want/ask him what they want to ask him, but i really think hounding him for info/spoilers can create larger expectations when it comes to chenford that then leave people disappointed at what's on screen. taking his vague words and then dreaming scenarios up only to have them be somewhat smaller within the show would be disappointing – and i know this is all a larger problem, but. just somethin' to think about.
that being said: i don't think they're robbing anyone of anything. they're telling the story they want to tell – if you are unsatisfied with what we get on screen...that's honestly why fic was invented. someone, somewhere will write something that was missing for you, i promise.
#i hope this is a lesson for everyone about managing expectations#good or bad#im staying away from promo content#if i can resist lol#The Rookie#The Rookie 5x13#chenford#Tim Bradford#Lucy Chen#Also am i the only one thats like hopelessly endeared by this show#i smile and laugh thru most eps#i kinda love how absurd its become

This is probably nothing and we’re reading too much into it cause there’s no actual evidence and it’s all speculation. Most likely there’s no Metro spinoff and we’re all spiraling for no goddamn reason or less likely there is a Metro spinoff and us spiraling won’t solve anything. It’s hard to stay in the moment and enjoy what we’re being given, but stressing about something we have no facts about seems futile.
I also highly doubt that there will be a spinoff for all the reasons above. The show runners also know how vital Tim and Lucy are to The Rookie. Even though it’s very much an ensemble show, almost ALL the marketing rn is Chenford. For example, all THREE of the promos they released for 5x13 were Chenford related/adjacent when the episode wasn’t really about them. And the two episodes this season that received the highest viewership since 2x19 were 5x10 (Chenford first date) and 5x12 (Chenford first time). The show is banking heavy on Chenford rn and I think they know they would lose a substantial amount of viewership. There’s no way The Rookie gets the same viewership without them and no showrunners/network would let a spinoff sink the main show.
And given how poorly The Rookie: Feds is going right now, I highly doubt ABC will approve another spinoff.
About the spin-off speculation - While I get why this episode felt like a back-door for a spin-off, I honestly don't think it was.
If there's a spin-off Rookie : Metro with Eric as the main character, that would mean Tim would be the rookie… Let's go back to the premise of both shows : middle-aged adults who decide to turn their life around and join LAPD/FBI. Nolan and Simone had just finished the academy when their show started. While Tim is a newbie at this job, I would hardly call him a rookie. So unless we have him sent to Metro Academy for the rest of this season, I can't see how he would qualify as a rookie once that new show starts. By that time, he would have been with Metro for at least a couple of months… so either they introduce a new rookie or they change the whole concept of the franchise.
It usually takes 2 back-to-back episodes to introduce the new characters that will form the main cast. Think of the episodes for the Rookie Feds : we had Simone, Garza and a couple of others who were the main focus for two episodes - Here, we only really had Lt. Pine and Hicks… who is leaving the team. The rest were just in the background. It's more likely that they were introducing the new team since Tim is going to be interacting with them now. When Angela became a detective, we got introduced to her new Sergeant, Caradine. Here, we get a new team since it's what Metro is… But only the boss had the spotlight. And we had way too many other stories to make Metro fully stand out.
When a spin-off occurs, there's a whole rollout to advertise it. That's why they tend to do them towards the end of the season to create buzz so the new show could be picked up by the network for September. So far it's been silent on that front... The only new promo we got at the beginning of the new year was with Nathan, not Eric.
We just had a spin-off with Rookie Feds… And we're not even sure it's going to be renewed yet. Most shows wait for a couple of years before introducing new spin-offs, to make sure that it's financially viable. Unless your name is Dick Wolf.
Of course I could be completely wrong and I'm just trying to stay positive as long as I can. And I know why we tend to jump to the worst case scenario, it's not like there is no pattern here... But for now, it seems to be more speculations than facts.
#i hope this helps reassure some ppl!#trying to follow my own advice and not freak out about speculation#but some of yalls doom posting is giving me a heartattack everytime i log on#why panic over something that most likely wont even happen#i think most of us have a tendency to lean towards the worst case scenario#but Alexi isn't worth the stress im devoting to this imaginary scenario#The Rookie#The rookie speculation#The Rookie season 5#chenford#Tim Bradford#Lucy Chen
