The thing that bugs me about wizard/witch aesthetic as depicted in popular media is that the eclectic clutter filling the character’s living and working spaces is often all wrong for that character’s demonstrated personality. “I’ll get around to cleaning it up later” clutter doesn’t look like “but what if I put it away and then I need it?” clutter, and neither of them look like “leaving it lying around because I’m hoping someone will ask me about it” clutter. And that’s without even getting into the interpersonal side: the sort of clutter that a person develops under their own steam is different from the sort of clutter that two housekeeping disasters with only partially intersecting interests and not enough space between them accumulate together. Sometimes I look at a fictional wizard or witch’s living space and try to figure out who her never-mentioned-but-obviously-present girlfriend is based on clutter incongruities.
