Wingfeather Saga Character Design: Greasle (Squattles)!

At last, with #WingfeatherSaga season 2 out in the wild I can finally show my first Fang of Dang! Greasle (orig. named Squattles) is a beast without yeast, a Fang who could have used some more baking time in the ol’ melding chamber. But he’s mine, and I love him just the same.

The Wingfeather Saga: Gammon Character Design

Another completely different #WingfeatherSaga #characterdesign : this was my take on the mysterious freedom fighter Gammon, who for mysterious reasons ALSO looked more like Inego Montoya, less like the Dread Pirate Wesley.

Florid Sword-Early designs

I’m glad #WingfeatherSaga S2 is coming out, because I’ve wanted to share these for a while. You may have only just seen the Florid Sword in the last ep, but he’s been pretty much designed since S1. These sketches were my take on the #characterdesign, but ultimately they went with a different look. Mine were less dread pirate Wesley, more Inigo Montoya. But I still like them, and they did keep my sword design ! #propdesign

Gnomey the gnome

Character design time! The client wanted a gnome mascot that was a combination of Ice cube and Stanley from The Office, but with a little bit more of a positive vibe than those 2. His name is Gnomey. I used @procreateapp with @dizzytara-stuff. and @maxulichney brushes.

Slarbs!

Another paintover/cleanup pass on a 3D character production model, specifically Wingfeather S1’s biggest meanie. These were done to create high resolution “hero shot” stills suitable for print and marketing purposes.

This is how I always thought #Cyclops gear could work, at least according to headcannon (get it?). I've wanted to try my hand at drawing him for a while. I also always thought he would be more fun if he were a bit of a dork, I hope that comes across.

One of my marketing #illustration tasks on Wingfeather was to do paintovers/cleanup over rough poses of 3D character production models, to create high resolution “hero shot” stills suitable for print. I obviously didn���t design anything new here, but the craft was very therapeutic. I’ll start with Gnorm, since his transformation was the most dramatic. Also this is my first posted image protected by Glaze! If it looks a little artifact-ey, you can thank the Ai scrapers! But, the effect isn't that bad, you still see most of the detail.

As far as I can tell, this prop didn’t make it into the show, unless it was used in the background somewhere, but I’m still happy with how it came out. It was supposed to be a cover for the Igiby wagon.

My son (3) showed me his first (I’ve seen) intentional drawing today. He made an arrangement of rectangles and A Circle and he called it a “robot”. He did it in yellow marker, and then attempted to “color it” with the same marker. The finished work did not preserve his intent, but I saw it. Maybe he will follow in my footsteps, and maybe not. I’ll be proud regardless. But today, he is my artist. He made it in Church on the back of a coloring page. I think I would totally read this book. I think it would be satisfying somehow. But then, it could have the opposite effect, I dunno. I can’t stress enough the importance of collaboration in working on an animated show. In this case my AD Garrett Taylor gave my design an extra push by combining different pieces from my last 3 drawings of Esben’s sword. His experience really shows in the final design of this important prop.
